Campgrounds near Medina, Minnesota
Medina sits in the western Twin Cities suburbs of Hennepin County, roughly 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis. RV renters use it as a quieter base for exploring the metro without staging inside the city itself. The area balances suburban services with quick access to lakes, regional parks, and the Mississippi River corridor.
Closest to town, the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey sits on wooded acreage in Maple Grove with pull-through full-hookup sites, tent areas, and camping cabins. Town and Country Campground and RV Park offers another private option in the northwest metro, while Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday and Dakotah Meadows RV Park serve travelers coming from the south. The Equestrian - Minnesota Valley State Park campground adds a public-land option along the Minnesota River for RV renters who want a state park experience.
Most private parks in the area are seasonal, opening in mid-April and closing by mid-October. State park sites are reservable year-round through the Minnesota DNR system.
Things to do near Medina
The metro's regional trail and park network is the main draw. Elm Creek Park Reserve in nearby Maple Grove has extensive multi-use trails, a swim pond, and wildlife viewing. Lake Minnetonka, immediately south of Medina, offers boat launches, beaches at Wayzata, and shoreline dining. Baker Park Reserve, west of town, adds paddling, a golf course, and a public beach.
Families staying at the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey are within short driving distance of Cabela's, factory outlets in Albertville, and Valleyfair amusement park in Shakopee. Downtown Minneapolis attractions, including the Mill City Museum, U.S. Bank Stadium, and pro sports venues, are roughly a 20-mile drive.
For state-park hiking, the Minnesota Valley State Park corridor southwest of the metro offers trails along the river bluffs.

The RV season in the western Twin Cities runs primarily from mid-April through mid-October, matching the operating calendar of most private parks in the area, including the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey. Shoulder-season nights can drop near freezing in April and October, so renters should confirm heater operation and water-line protection before arrival.
Summer is the peak booking window. Warm, humid days and frequent evening thunderstorms are typical from June through August, and this period accounts for nearly half of the region's annual precipitation. Weekends around July 4 and Labor Day tend to fill early, especially at KOA locations close to Minneapolis attractions.
Fall brings cooler nights, dry stretches, and peak leaf color around mid-October across the maple and oak canopy. Winter camping in the immediate Medina area is limited to state parks and recreation areas, which stay reservable year-round through the Minnesota DNR, though most private campgrounds are closed.

How to book a campground near Medina
For private parks such as the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey, Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday, and Dakotah Meadows RV Park, book directly through each park's website or reservation phone line. Summer weekends within 30 miles of Minneapolis fill quickly, so lock in dates as soon as travel plans are set.
For the Equestrian - Minnesota Valley State Park site, use the Minnesota DNR reservation system at mndnr.gov/reservations or call 866-857-2757. Reservations open up to 120 days before arrival, and newly opened dates go live at 8 a.m. Central Time. Same-day reservations are also available with no reservation fee.
All vehicles entering a Minnesota state park or recreation area also need a state park vehicle permit, sold separately from the campsite reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey are level, with 30- and 50-amp full hookups and pull-throughs long enough for larger Class A rigs and travel trailers. On-site amenities include a swimming pool, mini-golf, a playground, and Wi-Fi. Access is from Interstate 94 near the Dayton Parkway area.
Other private parks in the area follow a similar suburban pattern: paved or gravel interior roads, full hookups on most sites, coin laundry, and dump stations. Cell coverage across the western metro is strong.
State park sites at Minnesota Valley are more rustic and geared to smaller rigs, with reservation-only access, posted quiet hours, and standard DNR occupancy limits of one camping group per site.

Travel trailers and smaller Class C motorhomes usually land in the $130 to $200 range per night, a strong value compared to hotel stays in the Twin Cities west metro. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Medina,%20MinnesotaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Medina, Minnesota?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Medina. In Minnesota, recreational vehicles operated for personal use do not require a Commercial Driver's License, and a standard Class D license covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer available on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and your ID is verified right in the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before you fly in and you are set for your Medina RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Medina, MN?
Every RV rental in Medina comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 55 with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, picking the option that fits your comfort and budget. Plans vary by coverage level, with higher tiers offering lower deductibles. Pro tip: if it is your first time renting an RV, opt for the highest protection tier for the lowest deductible. You will relax more and enjoy that first sunset at Lake Independence a lot more.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Medina RV trip plans change?
You can book your Medina RV trip with confidence. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a full money-back grace period right after booking, so a quick change of mind will not cost you. After that window, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date, and special provisions exist for extenuating circumstances. Because Minnesota weather can swing fast in spring and fall, this flexibility is genuinely helpful. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to get the best RV selection, then reach out to RVezy support if your plans shift and they will walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Medina, MN?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental Medina options are plentiful, and many local hosts welcome dogs with no extra fuss. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see only listings that allow furry copilots. Once you arrive, you've got fantastic dog destinations close by: Baker Park Reserve in Medina has off-leash dog areas and miles of leashed trails around Lake Independence, and the Three Rivers Park District system lets dogs on most regional trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, mention your dog's size, and ask about any cleaning fee. Most owners are delighted to host well-behaved pups on your Medina RV trip.
threeriversparks.org/location/baker-park-reserveCan the RV be delivered to me in Medina or to a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery Medina is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your home in Medina, a nearby campground like Baker Park Reserve, or even a friend's driveway in Plymouth, Maple Grove, or Wayzata. They'll level it, hook up power and water, walk you through every system, and pick it up when you're done, no towing required. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which listings offer it. Pro tip: delivery to Baker Park Reserve (about 10 minutes from downtown Medina) is a popular first-timer setup that lets you camp without ever getting behind the wheel.
threeriversparks.org/location/baker-park-reserveHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Medina RV trip?
Mileage is flexible when you rent an RV in Medina, and several local hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer road trips. Most listings include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, and you'll see the exact policy on every listing page before you book. From Medina, popular drives include Duluth and Lake Superior's North Shore (about 150 miles), Itasca State Park to see the headwaters of the Mississippi (about 200 miles), the Boundary Waters near Ely (around 240 miles), and Wisconsin Dells (about 230 miles). Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/index.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Medina, MN?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Medina. Baker Park Reserve, right in Medina on Lake Independence, is the local favorite, with electric campsites, a sandy swim beach, golf, and miles of paved trails, all run by Three Rivers Park District. Lake Auburn Campground in Carver Park Reserve (about 20 miles south) is quieter and wooded, while Lake Rebecca Park Reserve in Rockford (about 12 miles west) has spacious electric sites on a peaceful lake. Baker Park books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as the window opens through Three Rivers Park District. Pro tip: target a Sunday-through-Thursday stay for better availability and lower rates.
threeriversparks.org/location/baker-park-reserveWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Medina?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from Medina runs from late May through early October, when daytime highs typically range from 70°F to 85°F and Minnesota's lakes and trails are at their best. July and August are peak season with the warmest water at Lake Independence, while June brings long daylight (sunset close to 9 p.m.) and fewer mosquitoes than mid-summer. September is a local secret: crisp air, fall colors along the Luce Line Trail, and lower campground prices. Winters here are cold (often well below 0°F in January), and most area campgrounds close from late October through mid-April. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip in mid-September for the best mix of weather, value, and availability.
weather.gov/mpx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay?
Yes, and Medina is one of the friendlier places to try it for the first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, water system, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures before you drive away. You can message the host with questions anytime before booking, and most happily share tips specific to local routes like Highway 55 and County Road 24. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan if you're nervous; they handle a lot like a large van. Pro tip: book delivery to Baker Park Reserve for your first night so you can focus on enjoying the campfire instead of parallel parking in the suburbs.
dot.state.mn.us/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Medina includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. One phone call dispatches help to wherever you are, whether that is an off-ramp on I-94, a forest road up north, or a campsite at Baker Park Reserve. Your host is also typically a quick message away for questions about specific systems like the awning or fridge. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number when you pick up the RV and keep it on your phone's lock screen. You will likely never need it, but it makes the drive even more relaxing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Medina RV rental into Wisconsin, the Dakotas, or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Medina RV rentals, and the Upper Midwest is made for it. From Medina you can easily reach Wisconsin Dells (about 230 miles east), the Badlands of South Dakota (about 600 miles west), or Lake Superior's North Shore in Minnesota (about 150 miles north). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so just message the owner from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a 7-day Medina-to-Black Hills loop through South Dakota is one of the most popular RV road trips from Medina, and totally doable in a week.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage will I get, and what's the gas budget look like?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to estimate. A Class B campervan rental Medina averages 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes typically get 10 to 14 mpg, and big Class A rigs land around 7 to 10 mpg. Most regular and diesel pumps in the Medina area along Highway 55 and at Maple Grove travel plazas accept any size rig. Expect Minnesota gas prices to hover near the national average, with cheaper fill-ups outside the metro. Pro tip: for a weekend trip to Itasca State Park (about 400 miles round trip), budget around $90 to $150 in fuel for a Class C, and download GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stations along Highway 10.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Medina?
Booking early pays off. The best campgrounds near Medina, especially Baker Park Reserve and Lake Rebecca Park Reserve, open reservations through the Three Rivers Park District system on a rolling window, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) fill within hours. Minnesota State Parks like Wild River and Lake Maria use the Minnesota DNR reservation system and open 120 days in advance at 8 a.m. Central, so set a calendar reminder. KOA and private parks like Minneapolis Northwest KOA usually have more last-minute flexibility. Pro tip: if peak weekends are sold out, target a Sunday-through-Thursday stay. You'll find better availability, lower nightly rates, and quieter campsites at Baker Park.
dnr.state.mn.us/reservations/index.htmlWhat's driving an RV around Medina and the Twin Cities actually like?
Driving in Medina is genuinely easy: it's a low-traffic suburb with wide county roads, gentle terrain, and quick access to I-494 and Highway 55. Most renters stay clear of rush hour on I-394 and downtown Minneapolis bridges with low clearances; instead, take the 494 loop around the metro to head north or south. Local roads like County 24 and Pinto Drive are smooth and RV-friendly. Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms and the occasional deer at dusk. Pro tip: if city driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers RV delivery Medina straight to your campground. You'll skip the metro entirely and start your trip on country roads heading toward the lakes.
dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Medina?
Campgrounds around Medina are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Baker Park Reserve offers electric hookups (no water or sewer at the site), modern shower buildings, drinking water spigots, a sanitary dump station, and a swimming beach on Lake Independence. Minneapolis Northwest KOA in Maple Grove has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), a pool, Wi-Fi, and a camp store. Lake Rebecca Park Reserve has electric sites and a central dump station. Most regional parks offer pit or flush toilets depending on the loop. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before you arrive at Baker Park since individual sites don't have water hookups, then use the dump station and water fill on your way out.
threeriversparks.org/page/campingWhat's inside the RVs available to rent in Medina?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. RV rental Minnesota listings in Medina typically include a queen or king bed, a kitchenette with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (furnace plus air conditioning), and seatbelts for every passenger. Most travel trailers and Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 8 with convertible dinettes, and many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Generators and solar panels are common add-ons for off-grid camping, and some hosts include Wi-Fi hotspots. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities like Generator or Pet-Friendly to match your family RV trip Medina to the exact rig that fits your crew.
rvia.org/What add-ons are available, and how do pickup and dropoff work?
Hosts in Medina make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators for boondocking, bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home in Medina or a nearby Twin Cities suburb, with an orientation walkthrough of 30 to 60 minutes. Many hosts also offer paid delivery anywhere within 50 to 100 miles, including straight to Baker Park Reserve. Pro tip: ask the host about a late-return option if your last campground checkout is at 11 a.m.; many will accommodate a same-evening return without an overnight fee.
exploreminnesota.com/How does payment work, and what should I expect for the security deposit?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never directly to the host, which keeps your trip protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup, and the amount varies by RV class (typically $500 to $2,000). As long as you return the RV in the same condition it was picked up in, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior, exterior, and any existing scratches at both pickup and dropoff. It is the easiest way to keep your deposit refund smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Medina in winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, winter RV rental in Medina is possible and can be a genuinely magical adventure if you embrace the cold. Some local hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces designed for Minnesota winters where January lows can dip below minus 20 F. Plan to stay at campgrounds with electric hookups so you can run the furnace continuously, such as private parks that remain open year-round or state parks with electric winter sites. Activities like ice fishing on Lake Independence, snowshoeing at Baker Park Reserve, and chasing the northern lights up north are unforgettable. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm the rig is winter-rated and ask for a quick lesson on preventing frozen water lines.
