Campgrounds near New Ulm
New Ulm sits in the Minnesota River Valley of south-central Minnesota, where the Cottonwood River meets the larger Minnesota River. The town's German heritage, Schell's Brewery, and downtown glockenspiel give RV travellers a walkable base, while surrounding prairie and river-bluff country supplies the campgrounds. Options within a short drive range from a full-service state park on the edge of town to municipal parks along small rivers and a dedicated horse camp near a historic fort site.
Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park lies directly on the south edge of New Ulm along the Big Cottonwood River, putting downtown and the park's sand-bottom swimming pond within easy reach. Shirley's Park and Country Retreat sits a short drive from town and offers seasonal sites with kayak rentals and lake frontage.
Farther out, Kuhar Park Campground in Lamberton and Watona Park Campground and Park in Madelia are small municipal campgrounds along the Cottonwood and Watonwan rivers respectively. Horse Camp - Fort Ridgely State Park, northwest near Fairfax, adds a dedicated equestrian campground on the bluffs above the Minnesota River Valley.
Things to do near New Ulm
Flandrau State Park anchors most trips, with a chlorinated sand-bottom swimming pond, roughly eight miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, and historic WPA-era stone buildings from the 1930s. The park sits within walking distance of downtown New Ulm, its glockenspiel, and Schell's Brewery, one of the oldest family-owned breweries in the country.
At Fort Ridgely State Park, roughly seventeen miles northwest, visitors can tour the ruins of an 1853 Army outpost, walk the battlefield of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War, and use twelve miles of horse trails plus a seven-mile bike route to Fairfax. Eight miles of hiking trails wind through prairie and wooded ravines.
River-based recreation is a common thread: kayaking and fishing at Shirley's Park and Country Retreat, Cottonwood River access at Kuhar Park Campground, and Watonwan River paddling from Watona Park Campground and Park, which also connects to a community pool, disc golf, and downtown Madelia.

The peak RV season runs late May through early October. Flandrau State Park's semi-modern loop is open year-round, but flush toilets and the seasonal dump station operate roughly May 1 through mid-October, and the swim pond runs a shorter summer window. Fort Ridgely's horse campground is a seasonal operation, typically open spring through late October, with electric hookups and water at every site. Watona Park's Madelia campground is a summer operation, typically mid-May through mid-October.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends around Bavarian Blast in mid-July and Oktoberfest in October fill Flandrau and private parks like Shirley's weeks out. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the Cottonwood River marshland at Flandrau, so bring repellent.
Winter camping is possible at Flandrau, which keeps year-round camper cabins, and select sites at Fort Ridgely. Reservations are required in state parks year-round, even for winter stays.
How to book campgrounds near New Ulm
Minnesota state parks, including Flandrau and Fort Ridgely, use the ReserveMN system at reservemn.usedirect.com or by phone at 866-857-2757. Reservations open 120 days in advance at 8 a.m. Central Time, and popular summer weekends and Oktoberfest dates at Flandrau can sell out within hours of release. A separate Minnesota state park vehicle permit, sold daily or annually, is required in addition to the campsite fee.
All state park campsites, including the Horse Camp at Fort Ridgely, require an advance reservation. Same-day online or phone reservations are also accepted when sites remain open, with no reservation fee.
Municipal parks are booked directly. Kuhar Park Campground reserves through the City of Lamberton, and Madelia Campground at Watona Park opens online reservations early each year for the coming season. Shirley's Park and Country Retreat handles bookings directly and is best contacted by phone, especially during festival weekends in New Ulm.
What to expect
Terrain around New Ulm is gently rolling prairie broken by wooded river valleys. Highways 14 and 15 handle through traffic and are straightforward for larger rigs, with a short descent into the Big Cottonwood River valley at Flandrau. Sites at Flandrau's semi-modern loop are close together with limited privacy between neighbors, and reviewers note regular small-plane traffic overhead during the day. The rustic walk-in sites offer more seclusion but require carrying gear a short distance.
Hookups vary. Flandrau's semi-modern loop has 34 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service and a seasonal dump station, plus 18 non-electric sites. Fort Ridgely's horse camp has electric hookups and water at every site, with a 60-foot max RV length.
Expect wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and bald eagles, and pack for cool nights even in mid-summer.

Pro tip: midweek bookings in May or September often land the lowest rates of the season.
exploreminnesota.com/regions/minnesota-river-valley/new-ulmWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in New Ulm?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Ulm, Minnesota. The state does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform when you book, so there's no extra paperwork to bring to pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before your trip and you're set to hit Highway 14 toward Mankato or cruise the Minnesota River Valley scenic byway.
dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/Pages/default.aspxIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my New Ulm RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in New Ulm booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on Hermann the German and Schell's Brewery instead of worrying about what-ifs. You choose the protection level that fits your comfort during checkout, and it covers most damages to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on Highway 14 heading to Mankato or need a jump start at Flandrau State Park, one call to RVezy roadside gets help dispatched any time, day or night. It's serious peace of mind for first-time renters.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my New Ulm RV trip?
Booking your New Ulm RV trip is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host. You'll see the exact terms during checkout, and your refund depends on how close to your trip start date you cancel. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip to help you sort things out if plans change. Pro tip: book early for Bavarian Blast in July, when the best rigs disappear fast, and review the cancellation terms at checkout so you know your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in New Ulm?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in New Ulm welcome dogs and cats. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where the host has already given pups the green light, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you're on the road, Flandrau State Park allows leashed pets on all trails and campsites, and the paved Minnesota Valley State Trail is a great spot for a morning walk along the river. Downtown New Ulm is also famously dog-friendly, with outdoor patios at spots like Lola Larkspur Market. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and ask about the closest off-leash park to your campsite.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in New Ulm?
Yes, RV delivery in New Ulm is one of the best-kept secrets for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will tow the rig to Flandrau State Park, Fort Ridgely State Park, Shirley's Park and Country Retreat, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you can fly into Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), drive 90 miles southwest, and step into a fully set-up camper without ever towing a thing. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host, and you can filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00181How does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy because each host sets their own policy for their New Ulm RV rental. Many listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles costing $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some hosts offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is great if you're driving the 90 miles to Minneapolis, 75 miles to Rochester, or further afield. Check the mileage section on each listing or message the host to confirm a package for longer routes. Pro tip: if you're just staying put at Flandrau State Park, a low-mileage plan saves money since you'll barely move the rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhere are the best campgrounds near New Ulm for RV camping?
RV camping in New Ulm has some genuinely charming options within minutes of downtown. Flandrau State Park (1300 Summit Avenue) is the local favorite, with 81 sites, 34 with 30/50-amp electric, a sand-bottomed swimming pond, and rigs welcome up to 66 feet. Shirley's Park and Country Retreat, just five minutes from town, offers full hookup seasonal sites with a 100-foot fishing dock. Fort Ridgely State Park, 20 miles northwest near Fairfax, has 22 wooded sites and historic fort ruins. Finstad's Oak Haven Campground on 428th Lane is another quiet local pick. Pro tip: Flandrau books out fast for Oktoberfest weekends in October, so reserve as soon as your dates lock in.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00181When is the best time of year to rent an RV in New Ulm?
Late May through early October is prime season for an RV rental in New Ulm, MN, with summer highs in the 75 to 85 F range and warm evenings perfect for the Schell's biergarten. June and September are the sweet spot for fewer crowds and lower rates, while July brings Bavarian Blast and October brings Oktoberfest, both worth planning around. Winters get genuinely cold, with January lows often below 10 F, so most hosts close their motorhome rental in New Ulm bookings from mid-October through April. If you want a winter adventure, message hosts with four-season rigs about heated tanks and shore power for ice-fishing weekends on the Minnesota River.
weather.gov/mpx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in New Ulm?
You'll do great, and most people booking their first time renting an RV in New Ulm are surprised how quickly it clicks. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, leveling, slide-outs, propane, water, and waste, and they leave you their cell number for the trip. New Ulm is also an easy place to learn because Highway 14 and Highway 15 are wide, flat, and uncrowded compared to Twin Cities traffic. If you're nervous about driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery so the RV is already parked at Flandrau State Park when you arrive. Pro tip: pick up midweek to practice in lighter traffic.
dot.state.mn.us/safety/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every New Ulm RV trip booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan for things like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and tows, and the RVezy support team is reachable around the clock if anything else comes up. Your host is also just a message away and can usually troubleshoot quirks like the water heater or awning over the phone. New Ulm sits at the junction of Highways 14 and 15, so service centers in Mankato (30 miles east) are close if you ever need them. Pro tip: snap a photo of the rig's VIN and license plate at pickup so info is handy if you ever need to call in.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trip destinations from New Ulm?
An RV road trip from New Ulm puts you in the middle of southern Minnesota's best loop. Minneapolis is 90 miles northeast for big-city culture and Mall of America. Mankato sits 30 miles east with the scenic Minneopa State Park and its free-roaming bison herd. Rochester is about 100 miles southeast, perfect for a stop near the Mayo Clinic and the SPAM Museum in Austin. For nature lovers, Pipestone National Monument is 130 miles west, and the Mississippi River bluff country around Winona is 140 miles east. Pro tip: the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway runs right through town and links several state parks in one beautiful drive.
dot.state.mn.us/scenicbyways/Can I take my New Ulm rental RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, you can take your RV rental in Minnesota across state lines into Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and beyond, and many hosts are happy to greenlight a road trip from New Ulm to the Black Hills or Lake Superior. Cross-border travel into Canada is sometimes allowed depending on the host's insurance, so message before booking if Manitoba or Ontario is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: keep a printed copy of your rental agreement in the glove box, since border agents may want to see proof you're authorized to drive the vehicle.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a New Ulm RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV trip budget, but New Ulm is a friendly place to start. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, and 16 to 20 MPG for a campervan or a midsize SUV pulling a travel trailer. Minnesota gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find competitive pumps at the Casey's and Kwik Trip stations along Broadway in New Ulm. For a four-day loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, plan about $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in town before heading west into Redwood County, where stations are spaced further apart.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near New Ulm?
For the best campgrounds near New Ulm, book as early as you can, especially for Flandrau State Park. Minnesota State Parks open reservations 120 days in advance through the ReserveMN system at reservemn.usedirect.com, and Flandrau sites for summer weekends and Oktoberfest in October often go within hours. Private parks like Shirley's Park and Country Retreat take reservations directly by phone and can fill weeks ahead during Bavarian Blast in July. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is also required, available daily for $7 or annual for $35. Pro tip: if your dates are full, check ReserveMN daily because cancellations pop up often.
dnr.state.mn.us/reservations/index.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around New Ulm?
Driving in and around New Ulm is refreshingly easy. Highway 14 (east-west) and Highway 15 (north-south) are wide, well-maintained four-lane roads with light traffic compared to the Twin Cities, and the terrain is gently rolling prairie with a few river valley descents near Flandrau State Park. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along the Minnesota River bluffs, and keep an eye on weather forecasts in spring and fall when sudden thunderstorms or early snow can roll through. Downtown New Ulm streets are wide enough for big rigs, but the historic block around the Glockenspiel gets tight, so park on Broadway and walk. The Minnesota 511 service has real-time road conditions.
511mn.org/What hookups and amenities can I expect at New Ulm area campgrounds?
Local campgrounds make RV camping in New Ulm comfortable. Flandrau State Park's semi-modern loop offers 30/50-amp electric at 34 of its sites, drinking water spigots, flush toilets and showers from May 1 through mid-October, plus a seasonal dump station right inside the park. Shirley's Park and Country Retreat offers full hookups with water, electric, and sewer at each site. Fort Ridgely State Park is more rustic, with vault toilets and shared water. Cell service is solid across most of Brown County on all major carriers. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank at Flandrau before heading to more rustic parks, and use the in-park dump station on your way out to avoid a stop on the drive home.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping.htmlWhat features and amenities are inside a typical New Ulm RV rental?
Your motorhome rental in New Ulm will feel like a tiny home on wheels. Most Class C rigs sleep 4 to 6 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and cab-over bunk, and they include a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, and a bathroom with a toilet and shower. Larger travel trailers and Class A coaches add slide-outs for extra living space, flat-screen TVs, and sometimes outdoor kitchens. Air conditioning, furnace heat, and propane are standard, and many hosts include a generator for boondocking. Seatbelts are provided for every traveling passenger, which matters since Minnesota law requires everyone to buckle up. Pro tip: ask the host if Wi-Fi or a cellular hotspot is included if you plan to work from the road.
dps.mn.gov/divisions/ots/seat-belts/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in New Ulm offer some great add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and pans, generators, propane fire pits, bike racks, and even kayaks. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near New Ulm, with most hosts available between 1 PM and 4 PM, and many offer delivery to Flandrau State Park or your driveway for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees vary by listing, so scan the details section before booking. Pro tip: ask about a bundle add-on for first-time renters, since many hosts give a discount when you grab linens and a kitchen kit together.
exploreminnesota.com/regions/minnesota-river-valley/new-ulmHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in New Ulm is simple and secure: RVezy processes everything online through the platform with major credit cards, so no cash or e-transfers change hands with the host. You'll pay the booking total at checkout, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. The hold is released after the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. Pro tip: do a careful walkaround video at both pickup and return at the host's place in New Ulm, since clear timestamps are the easiest way to avoid any deposit questions later.
