Campgrounds and RV parks near Nicollet, MN

At Minneopa State Park, the headline attractions are the twin waterfalls on Minneopa Creek and a resident bison herd. Visitors can hike the trail that encircles the bison range and, when open, drive through the enclosure to view the herd from a vehicle. The historic Seppmann Mill, a wind-powered grist mill built in traditional German style, sits within the park. Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park adds water and swim time to a trip. The park features a sand-bottom swimming pond, picnic areas, and WPA-era buildings, plus roughly eight miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails. New Ulm's downtown, German heritage sites, and Schell's Brewery are a short drive from the campground. Madelia's Watona Park Campground and Park offers a community pool, community golf, and river access on the Watonwan for canoeing and fishing.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through early October. Summer brings warm days, full park services, and heavy weekend demand at both Minneopa State Park and Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park. Reservations are recommended, particularly during busy periods and events like Oktoberfest in New Ulm, which draws crowds into Flandrau in early October. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Flush toilets and showers at the Flandrau semi-modern campground typically run from May through mid October, and the swim pond and seasonal dump station follow a similar window. Vault toilets remain available year round. Private and municipal campgrounds in the area follow the same rhythm, with Watona Park Campground and Park in Madelia operating a mid-spring through mid-fall season. Winter camping is possible at both state parks. Minneopa State Park is open year round, with winter activities including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and Flandrau keeps camper cabins available through the cold months. Expect limited water service and plowed but sparse sites.

Sites in this area lean rustic to semi-modern. The Flandrau semi-modern loop has 52 sites total, including 34 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service, one wheelchair-accessible site, and space for RVs up to 66 feet, with access to a shower building, flush toilets, and a dump station. Minneopa State Park has 61 drive-in sites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 60 feet, with six electric sites, a dump station, and showers. Privacy is limited at Flandrau's main loop, and several reviewers note aircraft noise during daytime hours, along with a rail line adjacent to parts of the Minneopa campground. Mosquitoes are heavy near marshy sections in mid-summer, so bug protection is essential. Pets are allowed on leash at both state parks. Firewood is sold on site, and bringing outside firewood into Minnesota state parks is restricted.
