Camping near Northfield, Minnesota
Northfield sits in Rice County in southeast Minnesota, about an hour south of the Twin Cities and within easy reach of the Cannon River Valley. RV travelers use the town as a base for state park camping, private resort stays, and lake access, with several campgrounds inside a 30-minute drive of downtown.
The closest public option is Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, northeast of Faribault just outside the small town of Nerstrand. Huge basswoods and maples tower over the aptly named Hidden Falls, a wide, shallow rapid on Prairie Creek where limestone bedrock is exposed and the rare dwarf trout lily blossoms. Private options fill in the gaps: Roberds Lake Resort and Campgrounds and Winjums Shady Acres Resort offer lakeside sites near Faribault, Camp Faribo caters to travelers off Interstate 35, and Cannon Falls Campground sits along the Cannon Valley Trail corridor to the northeast.
Most sites in this area accommodate travel trailers and Class C rigs. Only 27 of the campsites at Nerstrand have electrical hookups, while the rest are primitive campsites with no hookups of any kind, and full hookups are more typical at the private resorts.
Things to do around Northfield
Hiking is the main draw at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. The best way to see the beauty of this park is on foot, on 11 miles of hiking trails, with the short walk to Hidden Falls being the most popular route for families. Paths lead to bridges, a waterfall, and scenic overlooks, and interpretive programs, including guided nature walks, add insight during the warmer months.
Off-park activities center on the Cannon River. The paved Cannon Valley Trail follows an abandoned rail corridor for 20 miles between Cannon Falls and Red Wing, and paddling outfitters rent tubes and kayaks in season. Downtown Northfield offers historic walking tours tied to the 1876 Jesse James raid, plus the campuses of Carleton and St. Olaf colleges.
In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing take over. Snowshoeing is permitted anywhere in the park except on groomed trails and roped-off sensitive areas, and skiers use the groomed sections of the Cannon Valley Trail.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Summer brings warm days, active interpretive programming, and full campgrounds on weekends, especially at the state park. Bugs peak in June, though Nerstrand tends to be less buggy than northern Minnesota parks because it lacks a major lake or river.
Spring and fall are the best windows for photographers and hikers. The park is known for its spring wildflowers, large hardwood trees, and fall color, with the dwarf trout lily bloom drawing visitors in late April and early May. Fall color typically peaks in the first two weeks of October across the Cannon River Valley.
Winter camping is limited. The park experiences the cold and snowy winters that are typical of Minnesota, and the campground is open only from April until mid-October, while most private resorts around Faribault and Cannon Falls also close from late October through April. Snow cover generally supports skiing and snowshoeing from mid-December through February.

How to book near Northfield
Nerstrand Big Woods uses the Minnesota state park reservation system. Reservations for Nerstrand Big Woods State Park can be made through the Minnesota State Parks reservation system, and sites can be booked up to 120 days in advance. Online reservations are available 24 hours a day, and phone reservations can be made by calling 866-857-2757 April through September, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A separate vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Private campgrounds, including Roberds Lake Resort and Campgrounds, Camp Faribo, Winjums Shady Acres Resort, and Cannon Falls Campground, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill early, so reserving several months ahead is recommended for July and August stays.
What to expect on site
State park sites at Nerstrand are wooded and set on gravel pads. Each of the campsites includes a picnic table, grill, and fire ring, and outer loop sites offer better privacy than interior loops. Amenities include restrooms, showers, overflow parking, a playground, and a dump station located near the entrance of the campground. There are no sewer hookups on individual sites, and cell coverage is spotty inside the park.
Private campgrounds around Faribault and Cannon Falls generally offer 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer at pull-through sites, plus swimming areas, playgrounds, and camp stores. Roberds Lake and Winjums Shady Acres sit directly on lakes with fishing and boat access.
Pets must be leashed at the state park, and owners are responsible for cleanup. Quiet hours are enforced across most grounds in the area.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Northfield RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Northfield trip is easy to put together. Once you are on the road, your pup will love Nerstrand Big Woods State Park just 10 miles southeast, where leashed dogs are welcome on most hiking trails including the popular Hidden Falls route. The Cannon Valley Trail running between Cannon Falls and Red Wing is also leash-friendly and paved, perfect for morning walks. Pro tip, bring a long tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, most southern Minnesota campsites have grass pads ideal for dogs.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Northfield?
Yes, and RV delivery Northfield is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in the Northfield, Faribault, and Lakeville area offer delivery and setup directly to your campground, driveway, or event location, usually with a delivery fee based on mileage. They will level the rig, hook up to power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts who offer this service, then message them with your destination, whether that is Lake Byllesby Regional Park, Kamp Dels in Faribault, or a relative's backyard for Carleton or St. Olaf graduation weekend. Pro tip, delivery is a lifesaver for parents tailgating Defeat of Jesse James Days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038404414-RV-delivery-optionsHow do mileage limits work, and can I get unlimited miles?
Mileage on your Northfield RV trip is straightforward. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer either a generous daily allotment (often around 100 to 150 miles per day) or an RV rental with unlimited mileage for an additional flat fee. You will see the mileage policy clearly listed on each RVezy listing before you book. To give you a sense of distance, a Northfield to Duluth round trip is about 320 miles, Northfield to the Wisconsin Dells is about 440 miles round trip, and a loop through Mississippi River bluff country down to Winona is roughly 200 miles. Pro tip, if you are planning a longer RV road trip from Northfield, message the host upfront and ask about a flat-rate mileage package, many will work with you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008594-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Northfield, MN?
You have great options within 30 minutes of downtown Northfield. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park (10 miles southeast) offers electric and non-electric sites tucked among old-growth maples and the Hidden Falls trail. Lake Byllesby Regional Park in Cannon Falls has paved RV pads with full hookups right on a 1,400-acre lake, ideal for swimming and fishing. Sakatah Lake State Park, about 30 minutes southwest, pairs wooded sites with access to the paved Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail. Kamp Dels near Waterville is a family-favorite private resort with a water park and full hookups. Hidden Meadows RV Park just outside Faribault rounds out the list with quiet, full-service sites. Pro tip, book Nerstrand 120 days out for summer weekends, it fills fast.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00227When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Northfield?
The sweet spot for RV camping Northfield is mid-May through late September, when daytime highs run from a pleasant 66°F in May to a warm 80°F in July, and overnight lows stay comfortable for camping. Fall foliage peaks in early to mid-October along the Cannon River and at Nerstrand Big Woods, making late September one of the most photogenic times to visit. Summer weekends are the busiest, so if you want fewer crowds and lower rental prices, target weekdays in June or September. Pro tip, the first weekend of September brings Defeat of Jesse James Days to downtown Northfield, one of Minnesota's most beloved small-town festivals, book your RV rental in Minnesota at least two months in advance for that weekend.
weather.gov/mpx/I have never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You will be just fine, and Northfield is actually a great place for a first time renting an RV. The roads around town (Highway 3, Highway 19, and Interstate 35 just west of the city) are wide, well-maintained, and far less stressful than Twin Cities traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, generator, water systems, and dump valves, plus they are reachable by phone during your trip. Smaller Class C motorhomes and campervans drive much like a large van, so consider those for your first outing. Pro tip, take a 20-minute practice loop around the Carleton College fields after pickup before heading to the campground, it builds confidence fast.
dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire on Highway 3, an engine issue near Faribault, or a propane question at Nerstrand Big Woods, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically just a phone or text message away for quick troubleshooting on appliances, the awning, or the generator, and most issues are resolved in minutes. Common items like flat tires, dead batteries, and tow service are handled through roadside assistance. Pro tip, save the RVezy roadside number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the pickup location, and write down the RV's year, make, and model so you have it ready if you call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsCan I take my Northfield RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally normal for an RV rental in Minnesota, and most hosts welcome trips into Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. Popular routes include heading east to Wisconsin Dells (about 200 miles), south to the Iowa Great Lakes (about 220 miles), or north into Minnesota's North Shore along Lake Superior (about 250 miles to Duluth). Canada trips may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection package, so just message before booking to confirm. One firm rule, travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip, the drive from Northfield to Mississippi River bluff country in Wisconsin via Highway 61 is a stunning weekend loop, especially in early October.
dot.state.mn.us/travel/How much should I budget for fuel on my Northfield RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip expenses, but easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Northfield typically average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A motorhomes get 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans can hit 15 to 20 MPG. With Minnesota gas prices generally running close to the national average, expect to budget roughly $0.30 to $0.50 per mile for fuel. A weekend trip from Northfield to Nerstrand and back is under $20 in gas, while a longer loop to Duluth and back might run $80 to $150 depending on the rig. Pro tip, Costco in Burnsville (about 25 minutes north on I-35) is consistently among the cheapest fuel stops in the region, top off before you leave.
mn.gov/commerce/consumers/your-money/gas-prices/How far in advance should I book a campground near Northfield?
For Minnesota state parks like Nerstrand Big Woods and Sakatah Lake, the booking window opens 120 days before your arrival date on the Minnesota DNR reservation system, and the most popular electric sites genuinely sell out within minutes at 8 AM Central on opening day for summer weekends. For private campgrounds like Kamp Dels and Hidden Meadows RV Park, 4 to 8 weeks out is usually enough for summer weekends, less for weekdays. Lake Byllesby (Dakota County) uses its own reservation system and books up fast for July. Pro tip, set a calendar reminder for exactly 120 days before your target weekend, log into the Minnesota DNR site at 7:55 AM, and have your park and site number ready. That alone is the difference between scoring a hookup site and getting waitlisted.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/self_service.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around Northfield?
Driving in and around Northfield is genuinely easy. The terrain is gently rolling farmland with a few river valleys, no mountain passes or steep grades to worry about. Interstate 35 runs just west of town and is the main artery to the Twin Cities (40 miles north) and Iowa (about 90 miles south). Local roads like Highway 3 and Highway 19 are two-lane and well-maintained. Watch for occasional farm equipment in spring and fall, deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and sudden summer thunderstorms that can drop visibility fast. In winter, blowing snow on open rural stretches is the main hazard. Pro tip, check 511mn.org before heading out, Minnesota's official road conditions site is the gold standard for current closures and weather impacts.
511mn.org/Can I rent an RV in Northfield in the winter?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in southern Minnesota can be magical, think snowshoeing at Nerstrand, ice fishing on Lake Byllesby, or a cozy basecamp for a Twin Cities holiday visit. Winter availability on RVezy is more limited but absolutely a thing, and Dakotah Meadows RV Park in nearby Prior Lake operates year-round with full hookups. For cold weather trips, message hosts about heated holding tanks, skirting, and shore power capability (50 amp is best for running an electric heater alongside the furnace). Bring extra propane and a heated water hose. Pro tip, January temperatures average a high of 21°F and lows around 8°F, so book a Class C or Class A with a four-season insulation package and reliable furnace, and you will be toasty.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping/winter.htmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Northfield offer?
Most campgrounds near Northfield offer the essentials you need for a smooth stay. Lake Byllesby Regional Park has full hookups (electric, water, sewer) on paved pads. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park offers electric sites, modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station, plus potable water fill-up stations near the campground entrance. Kamp Dels offers full hookups, Wi-Fi, a water park, and laundry. Sakatah Lake State Park has electric sites and a dump station. For finding where to dump and fill water during your trip, the Sanidumps and Campendium apps map every public dump station in the region. Pro tip, Minnesota state parks require a vehicle permit ($7 daily or $35 annual) in addition to your campsite fee, the annual pass pays for itself in five visits.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/fees.htmlWhat should I expect inside the RV itself?
Most RVs you can rent an RV in Northfield through RVezy come fully equipped for self-sufficient camping. Expect comfortable beds (queen in the master, plus convertible dinettes and bunks in many Class C models), a working kitchen with a fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and oven, plus a full bathroom with toilet and shower. Heating and air conditioning are standard, and many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid use. Wi-Fi is host-dependent, some include a mobile hotspot. Every seated passenger gets a seatbelt, which is required by Minnesota law. Pro tip, check each listing's amenities tab and photos carefully, then message the host with any must-haves like a specific bed configuration or pet-safe flooring before booking.
dps.mn.gov/divisions/ots/seat-belts/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Northfield offer all kinds of extras to make your trip easier. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, generators (if not built-in), and outdoor grills. Many hosts also offer propane top-ups and dump station service so you can return the RV without that final chore. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Northfield, and dropoff is at the same location, but delivery to a campground or your driveway is widely available for a fee based on distance. Pro tip, ask about a Defeat of Jesse James Days delivery package in early September, some local hosts specialize in dropping the RV right at your tailgate spot and picking it up after the festival.
ci.northfield.mn.us/178/Special-EventsHow does the security deposit work on RVezy?
The security deposit process is simple and transparent. When you book your motorhome rental Northfield, RVezy places a temporary hold on your payment method for the deposit amount (separate from your booking payment), which is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. Payment is processed securely through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host in cash, which protects you on both ends. To avoid any deposit issues, do the walkthrough carefully at pickup, document existing scratches or wear with photos, return the RV with the same fuel level and propane it had at pickup, and follow the dump and cleaning policy in the listing. Pro tip, a 10-minute photo walkaround at pickup is the single best deposit-protection move you can make.
