Sleepy Eye camping overview
Sleepy Eye sits in Brown County in south-central Minnesota, within easy driving range of the Minnesota River Valley and several established state and municipal campgrounds. The town works well as a base for RV travelers exploring prairie parks, small river towns, and the German-heritage attractions of nearby New Ulm.
The closest full-service option is Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park on the edge of New Ulm, which offers modern sites with electric hookups and a shower building, with camping available year-round. To the north, Horse Camp - Fort Ridgely State Park sits off State Highway 4, six miles south of Fairfax or twelve miles north of Sleepy Eye, with a dedicated equestrian campground alongside the park's main drive-in sites. West of town, Jackpot Junction Casino Campground sits adjacent to the casino in Morton with full hookups accommodating RVs up to 60 feet, providing electric, water, and sewer connections along with a dump station and WiFi access.
Smaller options round out the area. Kuhar Park Campground in Lamberton serves travelers along the U.S. Highway 14 corridor, and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat - Seasonal Campground and Kayak Rental offers lakeshore sites and paddling access.
Things to do near Sleepy Eye
The Minnesota River Valley shapes most day trips from Sleepy Eye. At Fort Ridgely State Park, visitors can tour the ruins of the historic outpost, stop by the museum and cemetery, and use eight miles of hiking trail, plus horse trails, a bike trail toward Fairfax, and cross-country ski routes in winter. The park also has a stocked pond and a trout stream.
At Flandrau State Park, the big draw is the meandering Big Cottonwood River and a sand-bottom swimming pond, along with hiking trails, a playground, and picnic areas. New Ulm's downtown, Schell's Brewery tours, and Oktoberfest events are a short drive away.
Along the Cottonwood River, Kuhar Park Campground offers a disc golf course and public water access, while Shirley's Park and Country Retreat provides kayak rentals and lakeshore fishing.

The prime RV window in this part of Minnesota runs from late spring through mid-fall. The Fort Ridgely State Park campground is open May 1 through late October, and Jackpot Junction Casino Campground operates seasonally from mid-April through mid-October. Shirley's Park runs on a similar seasonal schedule, opening in spring and closing in late fall.
Flandrau is the outlier for shoulder-season and winter travel. Camping is available year-round, though flush toilets operate May 1 through mid-October and the dump station is seasonal; two heated camper cabins remain available in cold months. Summer brings warm days, heavy mosquito pressure near marshland, and full campgrounds on weekends. Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color along the river valley.
Winter camping is limited to hardy travelers with self-contained rigs. Snow, sub-zero wind chills, and reduced services are typical from December through February, and Fort Ridgely does not plow its campground road after snowfall.
How to book campgrounds near Sleepy Eye
Minnesota state park sites at Fort Ridgely and Flandrau are booked through the state's central reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance online through the Minnesota DNR reservation portal or by phone. A separate Minnesota State Parks vehicle permit is required for all vehicles entering state parks and state recreation areas; daily or annual permits are available online, in person, at self-service kiosks, or by phone.
Jackpot Junction Casino Campground books directly through the casino, and casino-club members typically receive a site discount. Shirley's Park and Country Retreat handles seasonal and short-stay bookings directly through the operator. Kuhar Park Campground is managed by the City of Lamberton, with reservations through the city.
Book popular summer weekends and New Ulm's Oktoberfest dates well in advance.
What to expect at Sleepy Eye campgrounds
State park sites in this area lean toward gravel pads with electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Flandrau's semi-modern campground has 34 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service, 18 non-electric campsites, walk-in sites, and two heated year-round camper cabins, accommodating RVs up to 66 feet. Fort Ridgely offers drive-in and walk-in sites plus a dedicated horse camp with electric hookups and water at every equestrian site, along with a renovated shower building.
Expect vault toilets in shoulder seasons, showers when the flush facilities are open, and firewood for sale at park offices. Cell service can be spotty inside the river valley, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is smart.
Jackpot Junction is the most big-rig friendly option, with paved pads, level pull-through sites, and full hookups. Municipal parks like Kuhar are simpler, with electric hookups and basic amenities.
