Campgrounds near West Concord
West Concord sits in southeast Minnesota's Dodge County, within reach of both state park campgrounds and privately run RV parks. The area offers a mix of quiet, wooded state park sites and full-hookup family campgrounds, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Rochester and Zumbro River region.
The closest state park option is Rice Lake State Park, which operates under DNR Parks and Trails management from April through October and accommodates RVs up to 55 feet with electric hookups available. About 17 miles northwest, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park offers 51 sites with 27 electric and 24 non-electric in the main campground, with most sites fitting rigs up to 60 feet and a few pads as long as 70 feet.
For full-service RV camping, Shades of Sherwood Campground sits on the Zumbro River in a mix of woods, rivers, and creeks. Hidden Meadows RV Park & Campground and Brookside Campgrounds round out the nearby private options for travelers wanting hookups closer to town.
Things to do near West Concord
Rice Lake State Park draws paddlers and birders to a shallow wetland lake. Its unique, shallow depth draws birds by the thousands on their spring and fall migrations, making it an exceptional bird-watching hotspot, and visitors can paddle across the lake to secluded canoe-in sites and hike about 5 miles of trails.
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park offers wildflowers in spring, a waterfall to cool off near in summer, colors in fall, and ski trails in winter. The park is best known for Hidden Falls and remnant hardwood forest.
For family recreation, Shades of Sherwood includes a swimming pool, a jumping pillow, and river tubing. The Zumbrota covered bridge and Rochester's downtown attractions are both within a short drive.

Most campgrounds in the West Concord area operate on a spring-through-fall schedule. Between April and mid-October, Rice Lake State Park's campground hosts 40 spots suitable for RVs less than 55 feet long, and Nerstrand Big Woods opens April through mid-October with cold and snowy winters typical of Minnesota, though the park remains open for day-use recreation year-round. Private campgrounds in the area follow similar seasonal patterns.
Spring brings migrating waterfowl and wildflowers, but conditions can be muddy and buggy in low, wooded terrain. June through August delivers the most reliable weather along with peak demand and full weekends.
Fall offers hardwood color at Nerstrand and quieter weekends. Winter shifts activity to day use, with wooded ski trails at Nerstrand and groomed trails at Rice Lake for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
How to book campgrounds near West Concord
Minnesota state parks use a central reservation system operated by the DNR. Reservations open 120 days in advance through mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone, and a vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Private campgrounds book directly. Shades of Sherwood accepts reservations through its own website and by phone, with themed weekends and holidays filling first. Hidden Meadows RV Park & Campground and Brookside Campgrounds also handle bookings in-house.
For summer weekends and holidays, book state park sites the day the 120-day window opens. Reservations open several months in advance and fill quickly, especially for electric sites, and popular electric sites at Nerstrand go early.
What to expect on arrival
State park sites in this region are wooded and relatively close together. Sites at Rice Lake are close together and shaded by tall forest trees, with a few sites in Loop B getting afternoon sun, and each drive-in site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill. Rangers sometimes redirect smaller RVs from initially selected sites to more suitable locations in the electric campground area, and there is no dump station at Rice Lake.
Access roads can be tight at Nerstrand. Many roads approaching the park are dirt and gravel, and interior roads have tight turns and possible scraping branches. Check site dimensions before booking a longer rig.
Private campgrounds offer more amenities and family activity, with hookup sites, showers, laundry, and dump stations. Expect busier atmospheres at private parks and quieter, more rustic stays at the state parks.

dot.state.mn.us/maps/Where are the best campgrounds near West Concord, MN?
You are in one of the best regions in Minnesota for RV camping. The best campgrounds near West Concord include Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo near Byron (electric and non-electric sites, with a free zoo on site), Chester Woods Park near Eyota (electric hookups, swimming beach, paved trail), Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park near Preston (large main campground with 30 amp electric and blue-ribbon trout streams), Lake Louise State Park near Le Roy (quiet, family-friendly, electric sites), and Whitewater State Park near Altura (modern campground with showers in a stunning river valley). Most offer clean facilities, dump stations, and quick drives between parks. Pro tip: reserve riverside sites at Oxbow Park early, they go fast.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/index.htmlWhen is the best time of year for a West Concord RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a West Concord RV trip, with July as the warmest month (average highs near 82°F) and September delivering crisp days and brilliant fall color along the Zumbro River valley. June and August are prime for swimming at Chester Woods, while late September brings excellent fall foliage on the bluffs around Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Winters in Dodge County are cold, with January highs around 23°F, so most campgrounds (including Oxbow Park) close for camping in winter. For the lowest rates and the fewest mosquitoes, target the first three weeks of September. You will have campgrounds nearly to yourself.
weather.gov/arx/I'm renting an RV for the first time. How does the handoff work?
First time renting an RV? You will feel ready by the time you pull away. Every RVezy host in West Concord provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through how to drive the rig, level it, hook up shore power, fill fresh water, use the propane stove, operate the awning, and dump the tanks. Most walkthroughs take 30 to 60 minutes and include a written cheat sheet or video reference. You can also message the host before booking with any questions, and RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip. Pro tip: ask your host to demonstrate the slide-out and the generator twice. Those two systems trip up most new renters.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in West Concord booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Cell coverage is solid along I-90 and US-52 but spotty in the bluffs near Forestville, so download an offline map before you head south. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup and you will be ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's a great RV road trip from West Concord?
An RV road trip from West Concord opens up some of the Midwest's most scenic backroads. A classic 4 to 7 day loop runs south to Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park (about 50 miles), then east along the Root River through Lanesboro (one of Minnesota's prettiest small towns), down to La Crescent and across the Mississippi to La Crosse, Wisconsin (about 90 miles), then north up the Great River Road through Winona to Frontenac State Park (about 100 miles). Want to head the other way? The Twin Cities and Mall of America are roughly 80 miles north on US-52. Travel into Canada is possible with host approval and proper insurance, but Mexico travel is not allowed on RVezy rentals.
dot.state.mn.us/scenicbyways/How should I budget for fuel on a West Concord RV trip?
Fuel budgeting is straightforward once you know what to expect. Travel trailers towed by your own truck will likely net 10 to 14 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A diesels run 7 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in Dodge County usually track close to the Minnesota state average, and you'll find competitive pricing at the Kwik Trip locations in Kasson, Owatonna, and Rochester (Kwik Trip is a local favorite for clean restrooms and easy RV access). For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before turning south toward Forestville, where stations get sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near West Concord?
For Minnesota state parks, book early. Reservations at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park, Whitewater State Park, and Lake Louise State Park open up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system, and popular summer weekends, especially July 4th and Labor Day, can sell out the day they open. Oxbow Park in Byron takes reservations several months ahead through Olmsted County, with minimum-night requirements on weekends and holidays. Private RV parks around Rochester tend to be easier to book even a week or two out. Pro tip: if your top pick is full, set a cancellation alert (sites open up almost daily) and keep a flexible date window in mind.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/reservations.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around West Concord?
Driving an RV around West Concord is easygoing. Local roads, including Highway 14, Highway 56, and US-52, are flat to gently rolling with wide shoulders and minimal traffic, which makes this region one of the friendliest in Minnesota for a campervan rental West Concord travelers love. Summer thunderstorms can roll through quickly, so check the National Weather Service forecast before heading out, and shelter in a sturdy structure if a tornado warning is issued. In late fall and winter, watch for black ice on bridges and deer at dawn and dusk. The Twin Cities metro adds traffic if you are heading north, so leave early or plan for delivery to skip the drive entirely.
weather.gov/arx/What amenities can I expect at local campgrounds?
Campgrounds around West Concord are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Oxbow Park offers electric sites with 20/30 amp service, potable water fills, restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station. Chester Woods Park provides electric hookup sites with modern restroom facilities, while Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park has 30 amp electric in its main campground with a centralized dump station near the entrance. For potable water on the road, every Minnesota state park has a fill spigot, and the City of Rochester has public dump stations near major fuel stops. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading south to Forestville, where on-site fills can have a line on summer weekends.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping/index.htmlWhat's inside the RVs available in West Concord?
You will be impressed by what is packed into a motorhome rental West Concord hosts offer. Most rentals sleep 4 to 8 people and come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, plates, utensils), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Generators are common on Class C motorhomes, while travel trailers typically run on shore power or battery. Onboard WiFi is rare, but LTE coverage is solid across most of Dodge and Olmsted counties, so a phone hotspot is a good backup.
fcc.gov/BroadbandDataWhat add-ons can I get with my RV rental, and how does pickup work?
West Concord hosts offer a long list of optional add-ons that make your trip easier: linen and bedding packages, camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayaks, generators, kitchen kits, and even pre-stocked pantries. Each host sets pricing in the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home in West Concord or a nearby town like Kasson, Owatonna, or Rochester, and delivery (often within a set radius) saves you the drive. Mileage policies vary by listing but most include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extras at roughly $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling linens and a camp chair set with delivery often costs less than buying it all separately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Concord%2C%20MinnesotaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You will pay for your West Concord RV rental through the platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and funds are held until your trip begins, which protects both sides. Hosts typically request a refundable security deposit (commonly several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the rig) held on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment. As long as you return the RV on time, with the agreed fuel level, no damage, and the tanks dumped per the listing, the deposit is released back to you after the trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off. It is the simplest way to avoid disputes and keep your deposit moving back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather if I'm camping in shoulder season?
Shoulder-season camping around West Concord is one of the area's hidden gems, and a little prep makes it cozy. April nights can dip near freezing and October lows often hit the mid-30s°F, so look for RVs with a working propane furnace, heated holding tanks, and good insulation (filter for Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels, which handle cold best). Book a campground with electric hookups, like Oxbow Park or Chester Woods, so you can run a small space heater and save propane. Carry a heated water hose if temperatures drop below freezing, or fill your fresh tank and disconnect the hose overnight. Pro tip: October fall colors along the Root River are spectacular, and you will often have the campground to yourself.
