Northwest Missouri has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summer highs typically sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, while winter lows regularly drop into the teens and twenties with occasional snow. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, though spring brings the highest rainfall totals and severe-weather risk from March through May. Peak camping demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks like AOK Campground & RV Park and Basswood Resort see heavy weekend bookings tied to family vacations and holidays. Reserve well ahead for Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends. Many private parks in the area operate year-round with reduced amenities in winter. Missouri State Parks near Agency, including Lewis and Clark State Park, keep electric campsites open through the cold months, though water service to individual sites is typically shut off from late fall into spring.

Sites in this part of Missouri tend to be level gravel or grass, with 30- and 50-amp service common at the larger parks. Full hookups are standard at AOK Campground & RV Park and Basswood Resort, while smaller lots may offer water and electric only. Big-rig access is generally good given the flat to gently rolling terrain. Cell service on major carriers is generally reliable across Buchanan and Platte counties, and grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to find in St. Joseph, Platte City, and along Interstate 29. Bring bug spray for summer stays, as mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall. Severe weather is a real consideration in spring and early summer, so confirm each campground's storm-shelter plan at check-in.
