Camping near Burlington Junction
Burlington Junction sits in Nodaway County in far northwest Missouri, within a short drive of state parks in Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. The surrounding tri-state region is dominated by rolling farmland, oxbow lakes, wooded river bluffs, and small reservoirs, giving RV travelers a mix of open prairie campgrounds and shaded lakeside sites.
The closest option is Big Lake State Park to the southwest, a 407-acre park set alongside the largest remaining oxbow lake in Missouri. Northeast into Iowa, Lake Of Three Fires State Park and Viking Lake State Park both offer developed lakeshore campgrounds with electric and full-hookup sites. Indian Cave State Park lies west across the Missouri River in southeast Nebraska, covering nearly 3,400 acres of bluffs and hardwood forest along the river.
For travelers who want hookups closer to town without state-park reservation windows, All American Campground and RV Park provides a private-park alternative. Together these campgrounds cover most trip styles: quiet lake fishing, forested hiking, equestrian riding, and family beach days.
Things to do near Burlington Junction
Fishing and paddling anchor most trips in this area. Big Lake State Park provides direct access to a shallow oxbow lake popular for boating and fishing, and its wetlands attract migratory waterfowl and wetland bird species. Lake Of Three Fires State Park has a lake suited to small boats and paddling, a swimming beach, and family day-use amenities.
Hikers can explore multi-use trails at Lake Of Three Fires that wind through woods and prairie, or walk the lake loop and nature trails at Viking Lake State Park. Indian Cave State Park adds miles of hiking and equestrian trails along the Missouri River bluffs, plus access to the sandstone cave that gives the park its name.

Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall. Missouri state parks allow reservations up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window, so summer weekends at Big Lake State Park fill early. Iowa state parks including Lake Of Three Fires and Viking Lake accept reservations up to 3 months in advance through the Iowa State Parks portal on ReserveAmerica, and their modern campgrounds are busiest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Shoulder seasons are quieter and comfortable. Spring brings wildflowers and active fishing, while September typically offers the most agreeable weather of the year in this part of Missouri, with cooler nights and lower humidity.
Winter access is limited but not closed. Big Lake State Park camper cabins are available for rent from April 15 through October 31. Many Iowa state park modern facilities such as showers and dump stations close from around mid-October through April. Ice fishing at Lake Of Three Fires is possible when conditions allow.
How to book campgrounds
Each state uses a different reservation system, so plan by park. Missouri State Parks including Big Lake State Park reserve through icampmo1.usedirect.com or by calling 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.; same-day reservations are not permitted, and cabin bookings require full payment at the time of reservation.
Iowa state parks such as Lake Of Three Fires State Park and Viking Lake State Park book through the Iowa State Parks portal on ReserveAmerica. Reservations are generally available up to 3 months in advance, and the last day to make a camping reservation by credit or debit card is 2 days before arrival. From November 1 through March 31, most Iowa campsites are walk-in only.
Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska reserves through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission system, and a valid Nebraska park entry permit is required in addition to the campsite fee. All American Campground and RV Park handles bookings directly with the park.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Expect modest, well-kept public campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Big Lake State Park offers basic, electric, and sewer/electric/water sites, a dump station, and fresh-water fill stations, plus eight premium camper cabins overlooking the lake. Iowa parks like Viking Lake mix non-electric, electric, and full-hookup sites with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station in season.
Sites are typically shaded, with gravel or grass pads. Cell coverage can be spotty in the river bluffs at Indian Cave State Park, so download maps in advance. Ambient light around the lakes is minimal, which makes for good stargazing but calls for a reliable flashlight.
Nearby small towns such as Bedford, Iowa, and Brownville, Nebraska, offer basic groceries, fuel, and antique shopping for restock runs.
