Campgrounds and RV parks near Lawson, MO

The core attraction is the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site, where guided tours walk through preserved machinery, the Watkins family home, and outbuildings including a school and church. The surrounding state park adds a 100-acre lake for fishing and paddling, plus a paved 3.75-mile trail that loops the entire lake and connects to the campground, which works well for kids on bikes and dog walks. At Wallace State Park, about 30 minutes north off I-35, families can fish six-acre Lake Allaman, swim, and hike several well-marked trails through hardwood forest. For a theme-park day, Worlds of Fun and the adjacent Oceans of Fun waterpark are roughly 25 to 30 minutes south, and downtown Kansas City's museums, barbecue, and sports venues are within easy driving range.

The Missouri State Parks on-season runs from mid-April through October, and this is when showerhouses, laundry, dump stations, and full water service are all available at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and Wallace State Park. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill fastest, and holiday weekends at Watkins in particular book well ahead. A two-night minimum applies to weekend reservations (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday) at both state parks. Spring brings green landscapes, wildflowers, and the region's wettest stretch, along with thunderstorm and tornado risk typical of the central plains. Summers are hot and humid with peak family bookings. Fall delivers the most stable RV weather: comfortable days, cool nights, and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day. Winter camping is possible but limited. Sites 1-34, 98, and 99 at Watkins remain open for walk-ins in the off-season, showerhouses close from November through March, and Wallace State Park's Campgrounds 3 and 4 shut down during the off-season while campground water is off from November 1 through April 14. Worlds of Fun Village operates seasonally in line with the theme park calendar.

State-park sites in the Lawson area are wooded, well-shaded, and set on gravel pads. Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site has 96 sites (74 with electric, some 50-amp), fire rings, picnic tables, two showerhouses, laundry, and a dump station, with parking pads from about 38 to 80 feet. There are no water or sewer hookups at individual sites, and converter devices are not allowed on any electric site. Wallace State Park offers basic and electric sites across four campground loops, with 50-amp service available and playgrounds near Campgrounds 2 and 4. For full hookups with 20/30/50-amp service and pull-throughs long enough for big rigs, Worlds Of Fun Village is the most RV-friendly option, adding a pool, laundry, and a store. Cell service is generally usable throughout the area, and campers should follow current Missouri firewood advisories rather than hauling wood long distances.
