Campgrounds near Lexington, Missouri
Lexington sits on bluffs above the Missouri River in Lafayette County, roughly 40 miles east of Kansas City along Highway 24. The town is a small historic river port with four National Historic Districts and many antebellum homes, and it is best known as the site of an 1861 Civil War battle. RV travelers typically use it as a quieter base for exploring the Kansas City metro, the Santa Fe Trail corridor, and the Missouri River valley.
Camping options in the immediate area lean toward private RV parks rather than large state park campgrounds. Green Acres Country Retreat and Owl Creek RV Park are the closest to town, while The Great Escape RV and Camp Resort and Lake Paradise Resort sit slightly farther out and add lake or resort amenities. For travelers who want a full-service resort closer to the metro, the Kansas City East / Oak Grove KOA Holiday is a short drive south along I-70.
There is no state park campground inside Lexington itself. The nearest state site is Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, which is a day-use property, so overnight camping in the region is handled by the private parks listed above.
Things to do around Lexington
The main draw is Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, a state-owned property in Lexington that preserves the grounds where an 1861 Civil War battle took place between Confederate troops led by Sterling Price and federal troops led by James A. Mulligan. The site encompasses the Anderson House, a mansion caught in the middle of the fighting, where bullet holes and cannon shots remain in the walls, with tours of the battlefield and walking trails provided over its 94 acres. Admission to the visitor center, including its exhibits, audio-visual room and souvenir shop, is free, while the Anderson House and battlefield tours are ticketed.
Downtown Lexington adds four National Historic Districts, antique stores, gift shops, restaurants, and a Madonna of the Trail monument overlooking the Missouri River on the old Santa Fe Trail route. A cannonball fired from the Battle of Lexington remains lodged within an upper pillar of the Lafayette County Courthouse.
For bigger day trips, the Kansas City metro is under an hour west and offers professional sports, museums, and the Country Club Plaza.

Western Missouri has a humid continental climate with a large seasonal swing. Summers are hot and humid, with July daytime highs averaging near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms common. Spring produces the most tornadoes in Missouri, with an average of 35 tornadoes each year statewide, and the Kansas City area can see river flooding during heavy spring rains, so campers along the Missouri River valley should watch forecasts.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping. Mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October are typically the pleasant sweet spots, with autumn generally the drier of the two and less prone to severe storms.
Winter tends to be the driest season in Missouri but typically yields significant winter precipitation, with snowfall averaging around 20 inches in the northern part of the state. Many private parks in the area scale back services or winterize water lines outside the warm season, and Missouri State Parks generally reduce services in winter, so call ahead before booking a cold-weather stay.

What to expect on the ground
Lexington itself is a small town, so expect quiet streets, walkable historic blocks, and easy parking for tow vehicles. The closest full-service groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are in Lexington and along the I-70 corridor near Oak Grove and Odessa. Cellular coverage is generally reliable in and around town and along the interstate.
Roads into the private campgrounds are paved or well-graded gravel, and most sites accommodate mid-size to large travel trailers and Class A motorhomes. Confirm site length, hookup type, and low-clearance approaches with the park before arrival, especially with a rental rig.
Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks near wooded and riverside sites, so pack repellent. Thunderstorms can be severe, occasionally with hail or tornado watches, so check forecasts and know where the campground's storm shelter or sturdy building is located.
