Campgrounds and RV parks near Maryville, MO

Water recreation drives most trip planning in this region. Big Lake is popular for boating and fishing, and the shallow lake supports wetlands that create a refuge for wetland bird species and migratory waterfowl. The 85-acre lake at Lake of Three Fires offers ample fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill, with accessible docks for easy casting. On land, Lake of Three Fires State Park contains eight miles of marked trails for hikers, horseback riders and snowmobiles. An equestrian campground provides non-electric and electric sites with restrooms, corrals, hitching posts and holding pens. In Maryville itself, families can visit the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum, catch a Bearcats game on the Northwest Missouri State campus, or use the town as a supply stop before heading to the lakes.

Summer is the busiest camping window in northwest Missouri. Warm lake temperatures, open swim beaches, and school-holiday demand mean weekends fill early at state parks. Advanced reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays, especially in the summer peak season, when warm weather invites outdoor recreation on the waters and the park pool is open at Big Lake. Shoulder seasons offer easier availability and cooler nights. Spring brings green-up and migrating waterfowl but also the region's wettest months, and river-bottom parks near the Missouri River can see flood-related closures. Fall delivers mild days, low humidity, and strong color through October. Winter camping is possible but limited. The Big Lake campground is open year round, with reservations offered April 15 through October 31, and showers and water available April 15 through October 31. AOK Campground & RV Park stays open year round with full hookups. At Lake of Three Fires, six studio cabins with heat and air conditioning are available for reservations year-round, though some campground facilities close seasonally.

Sites in this region skew practical rather than scenic-resort. Big Lake State Park offers basic sites with no hookups and electric-only sites, with water available at a handful of spigots placed throughout the campground. Sites 1 through 8 offer 50-amp hookups, and several pull-thru sites make RV parking easier. The campground runs along the lake's edge, where basic tent sites sit directly against the water and electric, water, and sewer hookups are available for RVs up to 50 feet. At private parks such as AOK Campground & RV Park, expect closer spacing, easy interstate access, full hookups, and amenities like laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. Missouri State Parks limit camping to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period at one park and require pets to remain leashed.
