Campgrounds and RV parks near Plattsburg, MO

Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site anchors the area's activities. The 100-acre lake supports fishing and a paved bicycle path loops around it, and the adjacent Watkins Woolen Mill National Historic Landmark offers tours of the preserved 19th-century textile mill and home. Wallace State Park adds hiking trails, a 6-acre lake stocked for fishing, and shaded picnic areas. Trice-Dedman Memorial Woods, owned by The Nature Conservancy and administered by the Department of Natural Resources, protects 60 acres of northwest Missouri hardwood forest as it appeared in presettlement times. Basswood Resort adds family activities including fishing lakes, a seasonal pool, and walking trails, while downtown Kansas City is a short drive south for sports, museums, and barbecue.

The Missouri State Parks on-season runs mid-April through October. During that window Watkins Mill and Wallace are fully reservable, showerhouses run, and water is available at the campsites. Weekend reservations require a two-night minimum, either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday. Off-season camping at Watkins Mill is available only on a first-come, first-served basis, and at Wallace State Park campgrounds 3 and 4 are closed during the off-season. Campground water spigots at Wallace are turned off November 1 through April 14, with potable water available at a frost-free spigot at the dump station. At Watkins Mill, showers, the dump station and laundry are not available during the off-season (November through March). Winter camping remains possible on electric sites, but plan for limited services. Summer brings heat, humidity, and the highest booking pressure. Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable RV weather, with fall foliage strong through mid-October. Thunderstorms and occasional severe weather are common from April through June.

State-park sites in this area lean toward basic and electric hookups rather than full utilities. Watkins Mill has 96 campsites, 74 with electric hookups. Each site includes a graveled parking pad, picnic table, fire ring and lantern hook, with two showerhouses, a laundry facility and a dump station on the property. Electric sites include both 30-amp and 50-amp service. Wallace State Park's family-oriented campgrounds include basic and electric sites, modern restrooms, hot showers, a trailer dump station and playground equipment, with walk-in sites for those seeking more seclusion. Basswood Resort and Pony Express RV Park and Campground provide full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service and family amenities.
