Campgrounds and RV parks near Polo, MO

Watkins Woolen Mill is a National Historic Landmark and the only 19th-century textile mill in the country with its original machinery intact, and guided tours of the mill and the Watkins family home run out of the visitor center. During summer months, the historic site's Living History Farm Program offers visitors a glimpse into the life of an 1870s family, with costumed staff giving demonstrations on cooking, gardening, and other period activities. At Watkins Woolen Mill State Park, a 100-acre lake with a paved bicycle path around it anchors the day, alongside fishing, a shaded campground, and picnic spots. The loop is about 3.75 miles and is popular with families on bikes. Wallace State Park offers wooded hiking trails, the six-acre Lake Allaman for fishing, and quiet picnic areas, and both state parks post natural history programs throughout the summer in the campground.

Peak RV season runs from mid-spring through October. At Watkins Woolen Mill State Park, some campsites are available year-round, but reservations are available only during the on-season, mid-April through October. Holiday weekends fill first, so reservations are strongly recommended when sites fill quickly. Summer brings the fullest programming, including living-history demonstrations, ranger talks, and warm-weather lake use. It also brings the region's most active severe-weather season, with thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches typical for northwest Missouri from April through June. Fall is generally the most comfortable stretch for RVing, with cooler nights, lighter crowds, and good color through October. Winter camping is possible but stripped down. During the off-season, November through mid-April, water at Watkins Woolen Mill is available only from a hydrant at the dump station, and winter camping remains available with electric hookups, though shower houses may close. At Wallace State Park, campgrounds 3 and 4 close from November 1 through April 14, and off-season camping defaults to first-come, first-served.

Wallace State Park offers basic and electric campsites, modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station, plus walk-in sites for tent campers seeking more seclusion. Private parks near Polo generally offer full hookups and easier pull-throughs, while state parks trade some amenities for lake access, trails, and quieter surroundings. Plan grocery runs in Cameron, Kearney, or Excelsior Springs, since Polo itself is small.
