Camping near Saint Joseph, Missouri
Saint Joseph sits in the northwest corner of Missouri along the Missouri River, roughly an hour north of Kansas City and a short drive from the Kansas state line. The area combines river-bluff scenery, oxbow lakes, and a working small city with plenty of history, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the region.
Campground options range from privately run RV parks like Sharp RV Park and AOK Campground & RV Park close to town, to two Missouri state parks within easy reach. Lewis And Clark State Park lies about 20 minutes south near Rushville on Sugar Lake, and Weston Bend State Park sits roughly 40 minutes south on a bluff above the Missouri River. Both offer a mix of basic, electric, and sewer/electric/water sites suitable for standard RVs.
Saint Joseph itself is compact and easy to navigate, with fuel, groceries, and dump-station-friendly routes. Families use the city as a jumping-off point for museums, riverfront trails, and orchard visits between campground stays.
Things to do around Saint Joseph
In town, the Pony Express National Museum sits in the restored 1858 stables used by the Pony Express eastern terminus, with interactive exhibits geared to kids and adults. Nearby, the Patee House Museum began as a luxury hotel and Pony Express headquarters and now houses transportation and communications exhibits, and the Jesse James Home Museum stands next door.
Outdoors, Weston Bend State Park has picnic areas, a stunning overlook, and over 10 miles of trails, including a paved bike path along the Missouri River bluffs. The 365-acre Sugar Lake offers boating and fishing at Lewis And Clark State Park when water levels allow, plus reliable birding for eagles, herons, and egrets year-round.
Schweizer Orchards, the Remington Nature Center, and the historic Missouri Theater round out easy in-town stops between campground days.

The RV season around Saint Joseph runs strongest from mid-April through October, matching how Missouri State Parks manage their campgrounds. At Weston Bend State Park, water is turned off from November through mid-April, except at a frost-free hydrant at the dump station, and the campground is open year-round but reservations are available only during the on-season. The Lewis and Clark Campground is open throughout the year, with reservations available April 15 through October 31.
Spring brings the wettest stretch, with May typically the heaviest rain month and occasional Missouri River flooding that can affect low-lying sites. Due to flooding of the Missouri River, the park may experience campground closures and limitations, so check the website for updates. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and peak weekend demand.
Fall offers cool nights, changing hardwoods along the bluffs, and quieter campgrounds. Winter camping is possible but cold, with snow and ice periods and reduced services at state park sites.
How to book campgrounds
For the two nearby Missouri state parks, reservations run through the state central system. Missouri State Parks campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, expanding from the previous six-month window, either online or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). For weekend reservations, the park has a two-night minimum (either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday). Non-reservable, walk-up campsites may also be available.
Private parks such as Sharp RV Park and AOK Campground & RV Park are booked directly with the property by phone or their own websites. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks out; midweek stays and shoulder-season trips typically have wider availability.
What to expect on-site
State-park campgrounds in the area are well maintained, with paved interior roads, modern restrooms, showers, and dump stations. Weston Bend State Park offers basic, electric and sewer/electric/water campsites, and family campsites for a little extra space. Most sites accommodate standard RVs, but overhead branches can pose clearance issues for taller rigs, so measure height before arrival.
Camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one park or historic site. No more than two dogs per campsite is recommended, and pets must be supervised and kept on leashes no longer than 10 feet at all times. Cell coverage is generally solid near Saint Joseph and along the I-29 corridor, but can be spottier deeper in wooded park loops.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Saint Joseph, MO
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Saint Joseph, MO?
Good news: an RV rental in Saint Joseph is one of the more affordable ways to explore northwest Missouri. On RVezy you'll generally find travel trailers from about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $250, and larger Class A coaches from $250 to $400, with hosts setting their own pricing. For a cheap RV rental in Saint Joseph, book midweek, aim for shoulder season (April or late September), and consider a travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: pair your rental with a full-hookup site at AOK Campground and you have a full weekend getaway for less than a comparable hotel stay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Joseph%2C%20MissouriDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Saint Joseph?
Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Saint Joseph. Missouri uses a standard Class F license for personal vehicles, and state rule 12 CSR 10-24.305 specifically exempts recreational vehicles used for personal travel from any Commercial Driver License (CDL) requirement, no matter the size of the rig. On RVezy, you'll just need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through the platform. That's it, no special endorsement, no test, no extra paperwork. Most renters are surprised how easy it is to go from booking a motorhome rental in Saint Joseph to pulling out of the host's driveway the same week.
dor.mo.gov/driver-license/What protection is included with my RVezy booking in Saint Joseph?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Saint Joseph booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're never stuck wondering what to do if something happens. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your preferred coverage level at checkout (not the host). It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it gives you real financial peace of mind whether you're parked at Lewis and Clark State Park or cruising US-36 east toward Hannibal. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking, the mid and top tiers significantly reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility if there's an incident.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Saint Joseph RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and refund eligibility is standardized across the platform rather than displayed listing by listing. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel and on circumstances like severe weather, which can matter during tornado-prone Missouri springs. Pro tip: book your Saint Joseph RV trip early to lock in the best rig, then if plans change, reach out to RVezy support right away. The sooner you act, the more flexibility you'll have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Saint Joseph RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Saint Joseph. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy when you search and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome four-legged guests (some charge a small pet fee, which the host sets). Saint Joseph is a great dog town: Krug Park has shaded walking trails, Hyde Park offers open green space along the bluffs, and several local campgrounds have on-site dog runs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and ask about nearby walking spots, they almost always have local recommendations you won't find on a map app.
stjoemo.info/1252/Krug-ParkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Saint Joseph?
Yes, RV delivery in Saint Joseph is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to tow or drive a large rig. Many hosts will deliver to local campgrounds such as AOK Campground, Beacon RV Park, or Lewis and Clark State Park, or even to your driveway, then level the RV, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for 'Delivery' on RVezy to see who offers it and the per-mile fee (hosts set their own). Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into Kansas City International Airport (about an hour south) and want your rig waiting when you arrive in St. Joe.
mostateparks.com/park/lewis-and-clark-state-parkHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Saint Joseph?
Saint Joseph is a fantastic jumping-off point because so many destinations are within an easy day's drive. Kansas City sits about 55 miles south on I-29, Omaha is roughly 140 miles north, the Lake of the Ozarks is around 230 miles southeast, Branson is about 280 miles south, and Mount Rushmore is a scenic 600-plus mile RV road trip from Saint Joseph up through the Nebraska Sandhills. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a handful offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: filter by 'Unlimited Miles' on RVezy if you're planning a long loop, it saves real money on a multi-state trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Joseph%2C%20MissouriWhere are the best campgrounds near Saint Joseph for my RV?
You have great options within 20 minutes of downtown. AOK Campground & RV Park, just off I-29 north of town, offers full-hookup sites, a fishing lake, pool, and a fenced dog area, and stays open year-round. Beacon RV Park on the south side has full-hookup RV sites close to shopping and restaurants. Sharp RV Park has paved pads and a dump station. For a state-park experience, Lewis and Clark State Park about 20 minutes south has electric sites right on Sugar Lake. Pro tip: AOK's pull-through sites are long enough for a big Class A, so you typically won't need to unhitch a towed vehicle.
mostateparks.com/park/lewis-and-clark-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Saint Joseph?
Saint Joseph is a true three-season RV destination with a sweet spot from mid-April through late October. Spring (April to May) brings 60 to 75°F days and blooming dogwoods, summer (June to August) runs hot and humid in the mid-80s to low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms, and fall (September to October) is the local favorite: crisp 70°F days, fewer bugs, and beautiful color along the Missouri River bluffs. Winters drop into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so most campgrounds scale back, though AOK stays open year-round. Pro tip: plan your Saint Joseph RV trip around the Jesse James Festival in mid-September for great weather plus one of the city's most fun weekends.
weather.gov/eax/I'm a first time renter, will I get help figuring out the RV?
You won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host does a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering the generator, slide-outs, water, propane, dump procedure, and driving tips for your specific rig. Many Saint Joseph hosts also send a short video orientation a few days before your trip so you can review it in advance. You can message the host anytime through the RVezy app, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away if you need help on the road. Pro tip: ask your host for their favorite local Saint Joseph route, they often suggest the quiet stretch of US-36 east to avoid I-29 truck traffic on your first day behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have a breakdown during my Saint Joseph RV trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Krug Park or stopped on the shoulder of I-29 outside town. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Saint Joseph also has several RV-capable service shops if you need parts or repairs. Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway, and snap a photo of your campground hookups so you can describe your exact location quickly if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Saint Joseph RV rental into Kansas, Nebraska, or Iowa?
Yes, an RV road trip from Saint Joseph across state lines is one of the best things about this location, you're within an hour of three states. Kansas is just across the Missouri River via the Pony Express Bridge, Nebraska is about 60 miles north on I-29, and Iowa is roughly 90 miles northeast. Cross-country travel within the US is generally fine on RVezy rentals, just confirm with your host before booking longer trips. Travel into Mexico is not allowed because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a classic three-state loop is Saint Joseph to Lincoln, NE, over to Council Bluffs, IA, and back, about 350 miles of easy interstate and beautiful river-valley scenery.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Saint Joseph RV trip?
Fuel in Saint Joseph is usually cheaper than national averages, which is great news for your trip budget. Missouri historically has some of the lowest gas prices in the country thanks to lower state fuel taxes, so you'll often pay less per gallon than in neighboring states. Plan on 7 to 10 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for a campervan rental in Saint Joseph or a travel trailer pulled by a capable truck. Pro tip: fill up at a major truck stop near I-29 before heading out, those locations typically have RV-friendly lanes with high-flow diesel and easy pull-through access.
dor.mo.gov/taxation/business/tax-types/motor-fuel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Saint Joseph?
You have more flexibility here than at coastal destinations, which is an underrated perk of RV camping Saint Joseph trips. For weekends in June, July, and around the Jesse James Festival in September, book Lewis and Clark State Park 3 to 6 months ahead through the Missouri State Parks reservation system. Private parks like AOK, Beacon, and Sharp typically have weekday availability even in summer and accept direct online bookings. Pro tip: if you can travel Sunday through Thursday you'll almost always find a same-week spot, and many hosts on RVezy will discount weekday bookings to help fill their calendar.
mostateparks.com/park/lewis-and-clark-state-parkWhat are the driving conditions like around Saint Joseph?
Saint Joseph is a friendly place to drive an RV, which is one reason it's such a popular launch point. I-29 runs straight through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, US-36 east toward Hannibal is a flat four-lane highway, and downtown streets are laid out on a simple grid. Watch for two things: spring thunderstorms with high winds (check the National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill office before driving), and the historic downtown area where some 19th-century streets are narrow with low-hanging trees. Pro tip: avoid the Belt Highway during 4 to 6 PM weekday rush, and use the I-229 spur along the riverfront for a scenic alternative through the bluffs.
weather.gov/eax/What hookups and amenities will I find at Saint Joseph area campgrounds?
You'll find full-service hookups at most local parks, which keeps things simple. AOK Campground offers 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi at every site, plus a dump station, laundry, and showers. Beacon RV Park has full hookups with cable TV, and Sharp RV Park has full hookups and a dump station. Lewis and Clark State Park has electric sites plus a centrally located dump station and potable water fill. Pro tip: top off your fresh water at the campground before heading out on day trips, water fills along rural Missouri highways are few and far between.
mostateparks.com/park/lewis-and-clark-state-parkWhat features will my Saint Joseph RV rental include?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. Most RVezy rentals in Saint Joseph come with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts, air conditioning, furnace, propane, and a TV. Many include a generator, awning, outdoor speakers, and a backup camera. Campervan rentals tend to be more minimalist but still include a bed, kitchenette, and house battery. Pro tip: most listings show photos of every feature, and you can message the host to confirm specifics like Wi-Fi hotspots, solar panels, or whether the generator is included or has an hourly fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Joseph%2C%20MissouriWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Saint Joseph RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer genuinely useful add-ons that make a family RV trip Saint Joseph way easier. Common options include delivery and setup (priced per mile), kitchen kits with pots, plates and utensils, linen and bedding packages, generator use, bike racks, fishing gear, propane refills, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough, and dropoff is the reverse, typically with a fuel and propane top-off requirement. Mileage policies vary by host, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and overage fees set by the host. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kitchen kit if you're flying in, you'll arrive to a ready-to-camp rig with zero packing hassle.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Joseph%2C%20MissouriHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Saint Joseph RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure, everything runs through RVezy so you never hand cash or a card directly to the host. You'll pay the booking amount through RVezy using a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before the trip. The deposit amount depends on the rig and the protection plan you select at checkout. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition, the hold is released after trip end. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff with your host, it's the easiest way to avoid any disputes and get your deposit released fast.
