Campgrounds and RV parks near Ainsworth, NE

Ainsworth sits in Brown County in north-central Nebraska, on the edge of the Sandhills and within short driving distance of the Niobrara National Scenic River corridor. The town serves as a practical basecamp for RV travelers exploring Long Pine Creek, the Niobrara Valley, and the small state recreation areas scattered across Cherry and Brown counties. Camping options near Ainsworth lean rustic rather than resort. Long Pine State Recreation Area straddles Long Pine Creek on a 153-acre tract, offering basic sites without electricity along with fishing, hiking, and an archery range. Long Lake State Recreation Area lies south in the Sandhills and provides quiet lakeside camping. Outfitter-run properties such as Rock Barn Outfitters Campground and Rocky Ford Camp and Outfitters cater to paddlers running the Niobrara. US Fish and Wildlife Services lands in the region, including Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge just north of town, add day-use wildlife viewing and river access. Expect gravel access roads, limited hookups outside private outfitters, and long distances between fuel and grocery stops.

Nebraska state recreation areas use two systems. Cabins, lodge rooms, and group lodges are reserved through the Nebraska Game and Parks online portal up to one year ahead, while reservable campsites open a booking window of 180 days in advance. Long Pine State Recreation Area operates entirely first-come, first-served: campers register at a self-pay Iron Ranger station using cash or check, and stays are capped at 14 consecutive days in any 30-day period. Long Lake State Recreation Area follows the same basic-camping model. All state park visitors need a Nebraska Park Entry Permit, sold annually or daily and required on any vehicle entering a state area. Private outfitter campgrounds along the Niobrara, including Rock Barn Outfitters Campground and Rocky Ford Camp and Outfitters, take direct reservations by phone or website. Reserve river weekends in July several weeks ahead.
