Campgrounds and RV parks near Bassett, NE

Bassett sits in Rock County in north-central Nebraska, at the eastern edge of the Sandhills and within a short drive of the Niobrara River corridor. It is the county seat of Rock County, a small town of a few hundred residents. The town works well as a fuel and supply stop for RV travelers heading to state recreation areas, wildlife refuges, and river-float outfitters along Highway 20. The closest public camping is at Long Pine State Recreation Area, a 153-acre tract straddling Long Pine Creek that offers basic camping, fishing, hiking and an archery range. To the south, Long Lake State Recreation Area covers 30 acres of rolling sandhills around a 50-acre natural sandhill lake and offers fishing, camping, picnicking and hunting access. Private options in the area include Oregon Trail RV Park and Rock Barn Outfitters Campground, and additional public land camping is available through US Fish and Wildlife Services holdings in the region. Together these give RV renters a mix of hookup sites near town and primitive sites on the water.

Reservation rules vary by property. Camping at Long Pine State Recreation Area is all first-come, first-served. Campers register their nightly fees in a raised, locked box called an Iron Ranger, self-service envelopes accept cash or checks only, and stays are limited to 14 consecutive days in a 30 day period. A Nebraska state park entry permit is required in addition to the nightly fee. Long Lake State Recreation Area also operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites are primitive, so arrive earlier in the day on summer weekends to secure a spot. Private parks such as Oregon Trail RV Park and Rock Barn Outfitters Campground accept advance bookings by phone or through their websites. For holiday weekends and hunting season, book several weeks ahead and confirm whether the site can accommodate the length and hookup needs of the specific RV being rented.
