Campgrounds and RV parks near Burwell, NE

The reservoir is the main draw. Primary sport fish at Calamus State Recreation Area are walleye, white bass, wipers (white/striped bass hybrid), channel catfish, carp, drum, muskie, northern pike, and crappie. Five boat ramps ring the 5,124-acre reservoir, and key activities include fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, and swimming at the sandy beaches. Amenities include picnic tables, fish cleaning stations, an unsupervised sandy swimming beach, and vault toilets, with the site surrounded by 4,958 acres of rolling native grasslands. One of Nebraska's five fish hatcheries sits at Calamus State Recreation Area, located below the dam with self-guided tours and displays on raising fish. In town, Burwell hosts Nebraska's Big Rodeo at the Garfield County Frontier Fairgrounds, a useful mid-summer anchor for a trip.

The practical camping season at Calamus runs from spring through early fall. Late May through mid-August is peak, driven by warm water, fishing, and the July rodeo weekend in Burwell. Weekend electrical sites at Homestead Knolls and Nunda Shoal fill first. Spring brings green hills and strong walleye action, but nights stay cold into April and thunderstorms are common in May and June. In Burwell, the summers are warm and mostly clear and the winters are freezing, snowy, windy, and partly cloudy, so shoulder-season RVers should plan for exposed Sandhills wind. Most modern facilities such as full-hookup service, showers, modern restrooms, dump and fill stations will typically be closed from mid-October through mid-April depending on weather. Changing weather can impact access to park roads, campgrounds, and facilities with little notice, and during drought conditions the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission may implement a temporary ban on campfires. Check current status before locking in dates.

Shower houses are available at Homestead Knolls, Nunda Shoal, and Valley View Flat campgrounds, and all three areas offer mature shade trees, water, modern restrooms, and each area is within walking distance of the lake. A dump and fill station is available at Little York Point. Camping is permitted in the parking lots of the Valley View Flat and Hannamon Bayou campgrounds in designated spots, and both offer basic non-pad campsites with access to water, restrooms, and shower houses. A group campground that accommodates up to eight tents is located in the Valley View Flat Campground. Tree cover varies across loops, and Sandhills wind is a constant factor, so awning use and leveling should be planned accordingly.
