Campgrounds near Ampere North
Ampere North is a neighborhood in East Orange, New Jersey, roughly ten miles west of Manhattan and adjacent to Newark. It sits in dense Essex County suburbia, so RV travelers trade a rural basecamp for fast access to New York City, Newark Liberty International Airport, and the northern New Jersey highlands. Camping options split cleanly into two groups: one urban RV park near the Hudson waterfront, and a ring of state and national park campgrounds in the forested hills to the northwest.
Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest full-hookup option and puts RVers within easy reach of the Manhattan skyline. For traditional camping, Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park, about an hour north in Rockland County, New York.
Further west, Wawayanda State Park and the rustic Camp Wyanokie extend the trip into the New Jersey Highlands, while Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, puts RVers on the Brooklyn side of Jamaica Bay.
Things to do near Ampere North
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, PATH trains, light rail, and NY Waterway ferries put Lower Manhattan within a short ride, and Liberty State Park and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferries are close by. Families staying in Jersey City can day-trip to the Liberty Science Center and the Newark Museum of Art without moving the rig.
Outdoor plans belong in the highlands. Wawayanda State Park consists of over 60 miles of well-marked trails in addition to a 19.6 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, with swimming, kayaking, and fishing on Wawayanda Lake. Harriman State Park is roughly 48,000 acres in Rockland and Orange counties, features 31 lakes, and has over 200 miles of trails, and Lake Welch Beach is a short walk from Beaver Pond.

Camping seasons vary sharply by park. Liberty Harbor RV Park runs year-round, so it is the default shoulder-season and winter option near the city. State and national park campgrounds are strictly seasonal: Wawayanda's campsites are open April 1 to Oct. 31, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October and offers tent and RV camping.
Summer weekends are the peak. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Expect crowds, full sites, and beach lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day at the state park lakes.
Spring and fall bring mild temperatures, fewer bugs, and fall foliage in the highlands, though shower buildings and beaches may close before the campgrounds do. Wawayanda sits at 1,140 feet and receives significant winter snow, and cross-country skiing is permitted on designated trails, while Liberty Harbor keeps city sightseeing accessible year-round.

Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!
