Campgrounds near Brookdale
Brookdale sits in Bloomfield Township in Essex County, about ten miles west of Manhattan. The area itself is dense suburb, so RV travelers typically use Brookdale as a base and drive out to campgrounds in the New Jersey Highlands, the Hudson Valley, or the two urban campgrounds close to New York City.
The closest option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, an RV basecamp for visiting New York City with electric and water hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, and quick access to Manhattan via ferry and PATH. Farther west, Camp Wyanokie sits on acreage at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest, and it is a rustic tent-only area without RV access.
For larger rigs and lake camping, drivers head to Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park in New York, where select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, though there are no electrical hookups for trailers, or to Wawayanda State Park in the Sussex and Passaic county highlands. Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, offers the other true urban option with a mix of tent and RV sites.
Things to do near Brookdale
From a Brookdale base, most trips split time between New York City sightseeing and hiking in the Highlands. Staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park puts campers within walking distance of ferries and the PATH train, with clear views of the Manhattan skyline from the property.
For outdoor days, Harriman State Park features 31 lakes and over 200 miles of trails maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, with swimming at Lake Welch, fishing, and paddling. A stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through Wawayanda State Park.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field provides a tranquil outdoor experience right outside New York City, with hiking, biking, birding, and historic tours of airports and forts. Ranger-led programs run through the summer season.

The camping window in this part of New Jersey and southern New York is essentially April through October. State-park campgrounds close for winter, while a couple of urban options stay open longer. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, which makes it the practical winter fallback for travelers who need a base near the city.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October and offers tent and RV camping, with a dump station available. Beaver Pond in Harriman and Wawayanda operate on a warm-season schedule tied to their state park systems.
Spring and fall bring the best hiking weather and thinner crowds. Summer weekends fill fast because these parks are the closest green space to the New York metro. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, which means weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Bug pressure ramps up from July into fall, and there may be bear activity in the area, so campers should follow bear habitat guidelines and keep sites clean.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Brookdale
Each nearby campground uses a different reservation system, so plan the booking channel before the trip. Reservations at Beaver Pond can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance, through the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica portal. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Wawayanda reservations are made at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey State Parks system, with a booking window that opens several months out. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field takes reservations up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, or campers can show up and hope a site is available.
Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through its own site or by phone, and Camp Wyanokie handles rustic tent-only reservations through its listed operator and does not allow RVs.
What to expect at Brookdale-area campgrounds
Set expectations by category. Liberty Harbor operates as a fenced section within a marina in Jersey City with basic hookups in an open gravel lot. It is a staging point for the city, not a wooded campground.
Beaver Pond offers campsites for up to two tents and six persons per site, with select sites accommodating a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long and no electrical hookups for trailers. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and alcohol is not permitted at the campground.
Wawayanda sites are basic and wooded with lake access nearby. Floyd Bennett Field is a converted airfield with no water or electric hookups at the RV plaza, and cell service in the outer parks can be patchy. Bring bug spray, bear-safe food storage for the Highlands, and expect quiet-hour rules to be enforced.
