Campgrounds near Caldwell, New Jersey
Caldwell sits in Essex County in northern New Jersey, roughly 20 miles west of Manhattan. The borough itself is residential and does not contain a public campground, but it works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the New York City metro and the New Jersey Highlands. Campgrounds within driving distance range from urban RV parking with skyline views to state-forest sites in rocky, wooded terrain.
For a full-hookup RV base close to the city, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers electrical service, water hookups, and views of the Manhattan skyline. Camp Wyanokie, a 150-acre property at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest surrounding a five-acre lake, is a tent-only option with 10 rustic campsites and does not accept campers or RVs, though it remains a nearby hiking and picnicking base.
Farther out, Wawayanda State Park operates a seasonal campground open April 1 to October 31, with online reservations at camping.nj.gov. Beaver Pond Campground sits inside Harriman State Park adjacent to Lake Welch and offers campsites for up to two tents and six people, with select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, though there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Fla-Net Park in Flanders rounds out the list as a private option off Interstate 80.
Things to do near Caldwell
Hiking is the headline activity in the Highlands west of Caldwell. Norvin Green State Forest offers a trail network with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,300 feet, with scenic views of the New York skyline, Burnt Meadow Brook and Lake Sonoma. Wawayanda State Park has over 60 miles of well-marked trails plus a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail restricted to hiking.
Lake activities are easy to slot in. Wawayanda campers get access to the park's 255-acre lake for kayaking and swimming, and Lake Tiorati Beach and Lake Welch Beach inside Harriman State Park are swimming facilities near Beaver Pond.
For a city day, campers staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park can catch a ferry across the Hudson to Lower Manhattan or walk to the Grove Street PATH station for a short ride into Manhattan.

The public campgrounds in this area follow a spring-to-fall calendar. Wawayanda State Park is open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park runs on the same April 1 to October 31 window. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City stays open year-round, which is useful for shoulder-season or winter travel.
Summer is peak season. Weekends at Beaver Pond can be busy with large family groups, generators, and radios, so midweek stays are noticeably quieter. Book several months out for July and August dates.
Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, foliage color, and easier reservations, though rain is common and higher-elevation trails can stay muddy. Winter brings cold temperatures and limited access to some areas. Wawayanda sits at an elevation of 1,140 feet above sea level, receives great accumulations of snow in the winter months, and permits cross-country skiing on designated trails. Bear activity is a year-round consideration in the Highlands parks and bear habitat guidelines are provided to campers.

How to book campgrounds near Caldwell
New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda, use the state's central portal. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov. Group sites at Wawayanda require a minimum of seven persons and are booked through the same system.
For Beaver Pond and other New York state park campgrounds, use ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at the 9-month window at 8 AM Monday to Friday and 9 AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center.
Private parks and community facilities are booked directly. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations through its website, Camp Wyanokie requires a paid reservation for use of the pavilion and all campsites, and Fla-Net Park handles bookings through the campground.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a range of amenities based on the type of campground. Beaver Pond offers campsites for up to two tents and six persons per site, with select sites for a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, picnic tables and fire rings with a flip-top grill, and shared full-service bathrooms; there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch.
Wawayanda is more rustic. Water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Camp Wyanokie is rustic with a hand pump water well and two latrines, and campsites have lean-to shelters, picnic tables, fire rings, and charcoal grills. Liberty Harbor is essentially urban RV parking with hookups and city views. Bear-aware food storage is standard practice at the Highlands campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Caldwell, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Caldwell, NJ?
RV rental in Caldwell, NJ is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially compared to hotel costs around the greater New York metro. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans and Class B motorhomes run roughly $150 to $250, and larger Class A and Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $400 depending on age and amenities. Hosts set their own pricing, so you'll see weekly and monthly discounts on many listings. For a cheap RV rental Caldwell shoppers should book midweek pickups, avoid the July 4 and Labor Day peaks, and filter by travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: shoulder season in May and late September often delivers the best Northeast weather and the lowest nightly rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Caldwell%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Caldwell, NJ?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Caldwell, NJ. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement to operate a motorhome for personal recreational use, even for larger Class A rigs. On RVezy, you simply need to be an approved driver (generally 25 or older) with a valid driver's license, and you'll confirm your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most Caldwell renters are surprised by how quick the verification step is, so you can lock in your dates with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Caldwell, NJ booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, so minor mishaps like a scraped bumper at a tight campground turn or a chipped windshield on I-280 don't derail your vacation. During checkout you choose from different RVezy protection levels so you can pick the coverage that fits your comfort zone, not the host's. Coverage details and limits are set by RVezy, not the individual host, which keeps things consistent across every booking. Pair the protection plan with included 24/7 roadside support and your New Jersey RV trip starts with a real safety net in place.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Caldwell RV rental?
Booking is lower risk than you might think, because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental Caldwell guests reserve on the platform. That includes a money-back grace period right after booking, so if your plans shift quickly you have room to adjust. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how many days remain before your trip starts. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will refund your booking or help you rebook so your trip can still happen. You'll see the exact cancellation terms applied to your reservation during checkout and in your RVezy account. Pro tip: keep an eye on the National Weather Service Mount Holly forecast in the days leading up to your trip so you can plan ahead with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Caldwell, NJ?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Caldwell travelers can enjoy is just a filter click away on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see only listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Hosts may charge a small pet fee or set rules like no pets on furniture, so message them directly before booking if you have multiple pups or a larger breed. Once you hit the road, Essex County's South Mountain Reservation is just minutes from Caldwell and has miles of leashed dog trails, while Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange offers easy walks with NYC skyline views. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, vaccination records, and a tie-out leash for campsite use.
essexcountyparks.org/parks/south-mountain-reservationCan the RV be delivered to me in Caldwell or to a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery Caldwell renters love is widely available and a great option if you'd rather skip driving a big rig through North Jersey traffic. Many RVezy hosts in the Caldwell, West Caldwell, Fairfield, and greater Essex County area offer delivery to your driveway, a nearby campground, or even an event venue, then handle the full setup, leveling, and hookup walkthrough on arrival. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see eligible listings, and check the host's delivery radius and per-mile fee on the listing page. This is the secret weapon for first time renting an RV in a dense suburb like Caldwell. Pro tip: ask the host to deliver directly to Camp Taylor or Panther Lake so you can start vacation the moment you arrive.
state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/How far can I drive on an RV rental from Caldwell, NJ?

From Caldwell that's plenty for an RV road trip from Caldwell to popular getaways like the Delaware Water Gap (about 60 miles west), Cape May (160 miles south), Lake George in the Adirondacks (215 miles north), or Acadia National Park (450 miles for a longer haul). Each listing shows the daily mileage clearly before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop, message the host to ask about a flat-rate mileage bundle, many will offer one to lock in your trip.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Caldwell, NJ?
You have excellent options for RV camping Caldwell visitors can reach in under two hours. All are bookable online and fit a range of rig sizes. Pro tip: New Jersey state park sites release on a rolling calendar, so set a reminder the day your target weekend opens for booking.
njstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Caldwell, NJ?
The sweet spot for a Caldwell RV trip is May through mid-October, when daytime highs sit between 65°F and 85°F and the Northeast's lakes, mountains, and shore towns are in full swing. Late May through June brings lush green forests in the Watchung Reservation and fewer bugs than July. September and early October are the real insider's pick: warm days, cool sleeping weather, and the Kittatinny Ridge and Delaware Water Gap explode with red and gold foliage. Summer is peak season for Jersey Shore trips, so book early. Winter rentals are available from select hosts with four-season RVs, perfect for ski trips to Mountain Creek. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of September for the best blend of weather, foliage, and availability.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay picking one up in Caldwell?
You'll do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that walks you through driving the rig, hooking up at a campsite, using the generator, dumping tanks, and operating the awning and slide-outs. First time renting an RV in the Caldwell area is easier when you start with a smaller Class B campervan or a 24-foot Class C, both of which handle much like a large van or box truck. You can also message the host any questions through RVezy before you arrive. Pro tip: plan your first drive on Bloomfield Avenue or Route 46 rather than the Garden State Parkway during rush hour, and you'll quickly build confidence behind the wheel.
nj.gov/mvc/license/basicauto.htmWhat if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never stranded on an RVezy trip. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways on I-80 heading to the Delaware Water Gap or on the Parkway heading to the shore, one phone call gets a professional dispatched to your location. You can also reach RVezy's customer support team before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Your host is usually just a message away too, since they know their rig better than anyone. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate so dispatch can help you even faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Caldwell RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, you have tons of cross-border freedom on an RV rental in New Jersey. Interstate travel within the U.S. is allowed and very popular from Caldwell, with renters routinely heading to New York's Finger Lakes, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Virginia's Shenandoah, or all the way to Maine. Travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and the rig's insurance, so message the host directly through the listing before booking if you're planning a Niagara Falls or Montreal run. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: keep your driver's license, RVezy booking confirmation, and the rig's registration accessible at the border, and you'll breeze through inspection.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for fuel?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy. Class B campervans typically deliver 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes average 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, but expect a 25 to 40 percent drop from its normal MPG. With New Jersey gas prices generally a bit cheaper than New York or Pennsylvania (and full-service pumps, since NJ law prohibits self-serve at gas stations), Caldwell is actually a smart launch point. For a weekend RV road trip from Caldwell to the Delaware Water Gap and back (about 130 miles round trip), budget roughly $40 to $80 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top up at Costco in Wayne or Wawa along Route 46 for the best local prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Caldwell RV trip?
Book early and you'll lock in the best sites. New Jersey State Park campgrounds use the ReserveAmerica system and release reservations on a rolling basis up to 11 months in advance, so prime summer weekends at places like Worthington State Forest or Stokes State Forest fill fast. Privately run parks like Panther Lake and Camp Taylor open their reservation books each winter for the coming summer. For September and October foliage trips, six to eight weeks ahead is usually enough. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Columbus Day) need three to six months of lead time. Pro tip: if your dream site is full, set up an alert on Campflare or Campnab, cancellations pop up constantly within two weeks of a holiday.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What are driving conditions like around Caldwell and North Jersey?
Caldwell sits in a quieter pocket of Essex County, so leaving town in an RV is much easier than navigating through Newark or Jersey City. Stick to Bloomfield Avenue (Route 506), Route 46, I-80 westbound, and I-280 to get out to the mountains and lakes without urban tangles. Avoid the George Washington Bridge approach and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels (commercial vehicle restrictions and tight clearances apply). Watch height clearances on the Garden State Parkway, where some overpasses are 11 to 12 feet, lower than a typical Class C. New Jersey is also one of two U.S. states where attendants pump your gas, no fumbling with the diesel pump on day one. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS like Garmin RV or the RV Life app to auto-avoid low bridges and parkway-only routes.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Caldwell?
Most campgrounds within an hour or two of Caldwell offer a full RV experience. Private parks like Panther Lake and Camp Taylor provide full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, pools, and camp stores. New Jersey state parks like Worthington and Stokes typically offer electric and water hookups at RV-designated sites, with dump stations on site rather than at each pad. For dumping tanks and filling fresh water close to home, Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Morris County has a public dump station, and many Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-80 (like the one in Bloomsbury) offer RV dump and fill services for a small fee. Pro tip: download the Sanidumps app to find dump stations along your entire route in seconds.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Caldwell, NJ?
You'll find a fully equipped home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental Caldwell guests book includes sleeping for 4 to 8 with a mix of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes, a kitchen with a 3-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet, shower, and sink. Most rigs have a roof-mounted air conditioner, furnace, hot water heater, and either a built-in or portable generator for off-grid power. Many listings include a TV with DVD or streaming, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Seatbelts are required for every passenger while driving, so check the listing's belted-seat count before booking a big group. Pro tip: ask the host whether the RV includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, many do, which is a game-changer for working remotely from a state park.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offer popular extras to make your trip smoother. Common add-ons include kitchen kits, bedding and linen packages, camping chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pre-stocked toiletries, usually priced between $25 and $150 each. Pickup is most often at the host's home in Caldwell, West Caldwell, Fairfield, or nearby Essex County towns, with delivery available to your driveway or campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are listed clearly on every RVezy listing, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50. Generator hours often include 2 to 4 free hours per night with overage fees beyond that. Pro tip: bundle delivery, a stocked kitchen kit, and a propane top-up at booking so you can skip the last-minute errands on departure day.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Caldwell, NJ on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. You'll see the full breakdown (nightly rate, mileage, generator, service fee, taxes, protection plan) before you confirm, with no surprise charges. The refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment, held on your card shortly before pickup, and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off and note any existing scratches or stains with the host. Pro tip: keep the dump receipt and fuel receipt from your final fill-up, they prevent any cleaning or refueling fee disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Caldwell, NJ?
Caldwell is perfectly positioned for an unforgettable RV road trip from Caldwell. Head 60 miles west to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for waterfalls, river tubing, and the Appalachian Trail. Drive 160 miles south to Cape May for Victorian streets and quiet shoulder-season beaches. Cruise 215 miles north to Lake George and the Adirondacks for lakeside camping and mountain hikes. Go 200 miles southwest to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for Amish country and Hersheypark. For a bigger adventure, Acadia National Park in Maine is about 450 miles north and Shenandoah National Park is around 320 miles south. All are reachable on a single tank or two from Caldwell. Pro tip: a 4 to 5 day loop hitting the Delaware Water Gap, Lake George, and the Catskills is the ultimate family RV trip Caldwell launches you straight into.
