RV camping near Clifton, New Jersey
Clifton sits in Passaic County, roughly a dozen miles west of Manhattan, which shapes the local camping picture. There are no campgrounds within Clifton's city limits, but RV renters have workable options in three directions: an urban RV park on the Jersey City waterfront, a primitive Passaic County site in the Wyanokie Highlands, and a cluster of state and national parks within a one-hour drive.
Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is positioned as a close RV option to New York City, located on Marin Boulevard. To the north and west, Camp Wyanokie sits in the Norvin Green State Forest area, while Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park has no electrical hookups and can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, making it best suited to tent campers and smaller rigs.
Further afield, Wawayanda State Park in the northern New Jersey Highlands and Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn round out the practical choices for RV renters basing near Clifton.
Things to do near Clifton
The draw for most RV renters here is dual-purpose: outdoor recreation in the New York and New Jersey Highlands plus easy access to New York City. Harriman State Park offers extensive hiking, lakes, and swimming beaches, and Lake Welch swimming beach is within walking distance of Beaver Pond Campground, with immediate access to portions of the Appalachian Trail.
At Wawayanda State Park, there's access to a lake for recreation, kayaking opportunities, a beach area, and numerous hiking trails including a section of the Appalachian Trail that passes through the park. Floyd Bennett Field has hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, a recreation complex with bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range with 8 to 10 targets.
For city days, Liberty Harbor sits near the Jersey City waterfront, PATH trains, and ferries to Lower Manhattan.

The camping calendar in this area is short. Most public campgrounds within reach of Clifton run from spring through mid-fall and shut down for winter. The Wawayanda State Park campground is reserved online at camping.nj.gov; water is not available at campsites and there are no shower facilities, and it is open April 1 to October 31. Beaver Pond opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October.
Floyd Bennett Field's operating window follows the National Park Service seasonal lease. The minimum operating season is from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Summer weekends fill quickly because of demand from the New York metro area, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible.
Liberty Harbor is the outlier, operating year-round and marketed to travelers who need a base close to the city in any season.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book
Reservation systems vary by campground. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov. For Beaver Pond Campground, bookings go through the New York State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations at New York State Park campgrounds can be made up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites.
Reservations for Floyd Bennett Field can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, and sites are easier to get there than at Fort Wadsworth. Advance reservations are required at least a day in advance, with a 14-night maximum stay.
Liberty Harbor books directly through the park. Reserve early for summer weekends and holidays across all locations.
What to expect on site
Hookup expectations should be set by campground type. Liberty Harbor caters to a range of RV sizes with electrical and water service, pull-through sites, and standard park facilities such as showers, restrooms, and laundry. The park functions more like a paved lot with hookups than a traditional campground, with sites close together and minimal privacy.
State and national park sites are more rustic. Each Beaver Pond site has a picnic table and fire ring with flip-top grill and there are shared full-service bathrooms, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Plan food storage carefully; black bears are active throughout the northern New Jersey and Rockland County parks.

visitnj.org/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Clifton, NJ?
Good news: your standard New Jersey (or out-of-state) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clifton. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission does not require a Commercial Driver's License or special endorsement to drive personal motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, or campervans within typical rental sizes. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home country along with your original license. Most first-time renters in Clifton are surprised how easy the licensing piece really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Clifton RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Clifton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you choose your preferred protection level, and the plan helps cover physical damage to the vehicle so you can drive off with real peace of mind. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it offers meaningful financial protection if you bump a low-hanging branch on the Palisades Parkway or scrape a bumper at a tight Jersey gas station. Review the coverage details at booking and pick the tier that fits your trip, then focus on the fun part: planning your route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Clifton RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a grace period during which you can cancel and receive a full refund. After that, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you will not see different cancellation rules on different listings. If your plans change, contact RVezy support and the team will walk you through next steps so you can rebook with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Clifton RV rental?
Absolutely, many Clifton hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see pet-friendly RV rental Clifton options, and message the host before booking to confirm pet fees or size limits. Once you're on the road, you've got great local dog-friendly spots like the off-leash area at Garret Mountain Reservation just minutes from downtown Clifton, plus easy day trips to dog-friendly trails at Ramapo Valley County Reservation or the Delaware Water Gap. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a copy of your pet's vaccination records, which some campgrounds in New Jersey may ask to see at check-in.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/rules.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Clifton?
Yes, RV delivery Clifton is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Passaic County traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV at a campground, a family member's driveway, or a festival site, then walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when searching and check each listing for the host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. Popular drop-off spots include Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia, Worthington State Forest, and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City with its famous Manhattan skyline views.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campingoverview.htmlHow far can I travel from Clifton on a typical RV rental?
You can go surprisingly far, because Clifton sits at the crossroads of Route 3, Route 46, and the Garden State Parkway, putting tons of incredible destinations within easy reach. Popular Clifton RV trip routes include the Delaware Water Gap (about 60 miles west), the Jersey Shore at Cape May (about 150 miles south), the Poconos in Pennsylvania (about 80 miles northwest), and the Catskills in New York (about 110 miles north). Coastal Maine and Acadia National Park are roughly 450 miles north for a longer road trip. Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, so ask up front and always confirm the mileage policy on the listing page before booking.
visitnj.org/nj-road-tripsWhere are the best campgrounds near Clifton, NJ?
You've got fantastic options within an hour of Clifton. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (about 15 miles southeast) offers full hookups with jaw-dropping Manhattan skyline views. Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia (about 55 miles west) sits next to the Lakota Wolf Preserve and the Delaware Water Gap. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (about 35 miles northwest) is a family favorite with a private lake. Pleasant Acres Farm in Sussex (about 40 miles north) features hayrides and a working farm vibe. For pure wilderness, Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River offers riverside RV camping Clifton families love. Pro tip: book summer weekends 2-3 months ahead, especially holiday weekends.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campingoverview.htmlWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Clifton, NJ?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Clifton travelers love, but each season offers something different. Spring (April-May) brings highs in the 60s and 70s and gorgeous blooms at the New Jersey Botanical Garden. Summer (June-August) sits in the 80s with occasional humidity, perfect for Jersey Shore trips. Fall (September-October) is arguably the best season, with crisp 60-degree days and stunning foliage in the Delaware Water Gap. Winter trips are possible too with a properly winterized rig, with January lows often dipping into the 20s. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of September for fewer crowds and peak fall color along Route 23.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Clifton area?
You'll do great, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every Clifton host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can text them anytime during your trip. To skip city traffic entirely, choose delivery or pick a campervan, which drives almost like a large SUV. If you're driving yourself out, leave Clifton midmorning to avoid rush hour on Route 3 and the GSP, then head west on I-80 toward open country roads. Most first-timers feel completely comfortable within the first 30 minutes behind the wheel. RVezy support is also available 24/7 if you need a confidence boost.
nj.gov/mvc/pdf/license/drivermanual.htmWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Clifton trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway or an electrical issue at a Pocono campground, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a great second line of support and knows the rig inside and out. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pulling out of Clifton, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you can share details fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive a Clifton RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-state travel is easy: most hosts happily allow trips throughout the lower 48, and a Clifton location is perfect for hitting New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Cross-border travel to Canada is sometimes allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing and confirm in writing before booking if a Niagara Falls or Montreal road trip is on your list. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a Clifton RV road trip up the New England coast through Mystic, Newport, and Portland is one of the most rewarding routes from northern New Jersey.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's the realistic fuel budget for a Clifton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Clifton average 8-12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers pulled by SUVs get 10-14 MPG, and campervans can hit 18-22 MPG. New Jersey gas prices typically run a bit lower than New York or Pennsylvania thanks to the state's fuel tax structure, and as of 2025 regular unleaded averages roughly $3.10-$3.40 per gallon statewide. Pro tip: fill up in Clifton or along Route 46 before crossing into New York, since prices jump noticeably once you cross the GW Bridge. Also remember New Jersey is a full-service gas state, so stay in the vehicle and let the attendant pump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clifton?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best spots. For New Jersey state parks like Worthington, Stokes, and Bass River, reservations open through ReserveAmerica and the NJ DEP system up to 13 months in advance, and summer weekends fill within days of release. Private campgrounds like Liberty Harbor RV or Camp Taylor typically take reservations 6-12 months out and sell out fastest for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. For midweek shoulder-season trips, 2-3 weeks lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if you're flexible, search Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals, which often have last-minute openings even at the most popular Delaware Water Gap sites.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campingoverview.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Clifton?
Clifton is a busy North Jersey metro area, so it pays to plan around traffic and a few quirks. Route 3, Route 46, and the Garden State Parkway can get congested weekdays from 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM, so aim for midmorning or evening departures. Heads up on low-clearance bridges: the Route 3 and Route 46 corridors have several overpasses under 12 feet, so know your RV's height (it's posted near the driver's seat) and use an RV-specific GPS app like RV Trip Wizard. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December to March. Pro tip: book delivery if the idea of driving an RV through the Lincoln Tunnel area makes you nervous, which it should, since RVs are restricted there.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities do campgrounds near Clifton offer?
You'll find a great range of options. Full-hookup campgrounds like Liberty Harbor RV Park, Panther Lake Camping Resort, and Camp Taylor offer 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, and sewer hookups right at your site, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and hot showers. State park sites at Worthington and Stokes State Forest are more rustic, with potable water spigots and centralized dump stations but limited or no electric hookups. Most private parks near Clifton have on-site dump stations, propane refill, and camp stores. Pro tip: if you're staying at a rustic site, top off fresh water in Clifton before you leave and use the dump station at your campground's exit rather than searching for one mid-route.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/campingoverview.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Clifton RV rental?
Most Clifton motorhome rental and travel trailer options come fully equipped, so you can pack light and hit the road fast. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2-8 people depending on the rig, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, a dinette, climate control, and seatbelts at every designated travel seat. Many listings also include a TV, generator, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and sometimes Wi-Fi hotspots. Linens, towels, and kitchen kits vary by host, so check the listing's amenities section. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group size, then message the host to confirm if linens are included or available as an add-on.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
You've got lots of flexibility. Common Clifton host add-ons include delivery and setup, generator use, bike racks, kayak/paddleboard mounts, linen and kitchen kits, outdoor grills, fire pits, and pet packages, typically priced $15-$75 each. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's home base in or near Clifton, often within 10-15 minutes of Route 3 or the GSP. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100-150 free miles per day, while others offer unlimited mileage for an upcharge, which is worth it for longer trips to the Adirondacks or Outer Banks. Pro tip: bundle the kitchen kit, linens, and outdoor gear add-ons to save versus buying them piecemeal at a Paterson Walmart on day one.
visitnj.org/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full booking total through RVezy at checkout using a credit or debit card, and your funds are held safely until your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is also placed as a hold on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown at checkout. As long as you return the RV in the same condition and follow the host's mileage and generator policies, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video of the exterior, interior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off in Clifton. It is the easiest way to avoid deposit disputes and keep things stress-free.
