Campgrounds near East Orange, New Jersey
East Orange sits in Essex County, roughly 15 miles west of Manhattan, with no campgrounds inside city limits. RV travelers use it as a launch point for parks in northern New Jersey, Rockland County, and the Gateway National Recreation Area. Options split into two categories: urban RV parking with hookups near the Hudson River, and rustic state-park or state-forest sites in the New York and New Jersey Highlands.
The closest full-service option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry, positioned within short reach of PATH and ferry service to Manhattan.
For a more traditional camping experience within about an hour's drive, travelers head to Camp Wyanokie in West Milford, adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest, Wawayanda State Park, open April 1 to Oct. 31 and bookable at camping.nj.gov, Beaver Pond Campground inside the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, with 125 sites and select spots for trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, and Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn on Jamaica Bay, offering 32 tent sites and 20 RV parking sites.
Things to do near East Orange
The metro location is the main draw. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, PATH trains and NY Waterway ferries connect quickly to lower Manhattan, and Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty ferry, and Ellis Island are within easy reach.
For outdoor days, the surrounding Highlands offer hiking, paddling, and fishing. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities including swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating. Beaver Pond sits within walking distance of Lake Welch swimming beach and offers access to portions of the Appalachian Trail. Wawayanda State Park adds a designated swim beach, kayaking on Wawayanda Lake, and the Stairway to Heaven section of the Appalachian Trail. Floyd Bennett Field has hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range with 8 to 10 targets.

The northern New Jersey and Hudson Valley camping season is short. State-park campgrounds around East Orange follow a spring-through-fall schedule: Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 to Oct. 31, and Beaver Pond opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, then runs a regular reservation season through mid-October. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill fastest, and summer is the busiest window across the region.
Spring brings cool nights, wet trails, and tick pressure, so tick checks and repellent are strongly recommended in wooded areas. Summer is warm and humid with common afternoon thunderstorms, and swimming is permitted only in the designated beach area when lifeguards are on duty, usually from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Fall delivers the region's best camping weather, with cool days, low humidity, and Highlands foliage peaking in mid to late October. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October, so Liberty Harbor RV Park is the main year-round option for late-fall through early-spring trips.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campgrounds near East Orange
Reservation systems vary by property. New Jersey state park campsites, including Wawayanda, are booked online at camping.nj.gov. For Beaver Pond in Harriman, camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance on Reserve America, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3pm, and no walk-ins are allowed.
Floyd Bennett Field reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, and sites are generally easier to get there than at Fort Wadsworth. Liberty Harbor is booked directly through the park's website; reserve well in advance during peak tourist seasons. Camp Wyanokie is a small municipal preserve and reservations are made through the camp directly.
What to expect at campgrounds near East Orange
Sites near East Orange trade off amenities for setting. Liberty Harbor is essentially a paved lot with hookups rather than a traditional campground, with sites close together and minimal privacy. Access can be tight with a large rig, and city noise and premium demand should be expected.
The state-park campgrounds are the opposite: quieter, wooded, and light on utilities. Beaver Pond provides full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups available. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Camp Wyanokie does not accommodate RVs. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Plan for self-contained rigs and bring extra water.

RV rental in East Orange is more affordable than most people expect, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy, you will typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $175 per night, campervans from $150 to $275, and Class C motorhomes from $175 to $325 depending on size and season. Summer weekends near the Jersey Shore push prices higher, so booking midweek or shoulder season (April-May or September-October) is a smart move for a cheap RV rental in East Orange. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Orange%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in East Orange?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in East Orange. New Jersey does not require a special license, CDL, or endorsement for any standard recreational vehicle under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no DMV trip or paperwork on your end. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit, and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the whole pickup process moves once ID is confirmed.
nj.gov/mvc/license/firstlic.htmWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my booking?
Every RV rental in East Orange booked through RVezy comes with a renter Protection Plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are never stranded and never on the hook for the full repair bill if something unexpected happens. During checkout, you choose from different protection tiers based on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want, and the plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle. You select the plan yourself, which means you control your level of peace of mind. Roadside help covers flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing, whether you are parked on Central Avenue or rolling through the Delaware Water Gap two hours west.

Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and that includes a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. After the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is from the cancellation date. RVezy support is reachable if life throws you a curveball, including situations like severe weather. You will see the exact terms during checkout before you pay. Pro tip: book your East Orange RV trip early to secure the best dates, knowing the grace window has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in East Orange?
Absolutely, pets are welcome on plenty of East Orange rentals. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to narrow the list to hosts who specifically allow dogs and cats, and you will see clear rules (and sometimes a small cleaning fee) right on the listing. For a pet-friendly RV rental East Orange travelers love, head to Eagle Rock Reservation just minutes away in West Orange, where leashed pups can roam the trails with skyline views of Manhattan. Cheesequake State Park near Matawan (about 35 miles south) also allows leashed dogs at campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, it makes pickup smooth.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in East Orange?
Yes, RV delivery in East Orange is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who do not want to drive a motorhome through Essex County traffic on day one. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campground, driveway, or a private property in East Orange, Newark, Montclair, or as far as Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City. Delivery fees are set by each host and often scale with distance, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask about full setup, including leveling, slide-outs, hookups, and a walkthrough, so you can step in and start your trip.

From East Orange you are about 35 miles from Sandy Hook beach, 70 miles to the Delaware Water Gap, 90 miles to the Pocono Mountains, 100 miles to Philadelphia, and 160 miles to Cape May. If you will be logging big miles, filter for hosts with higher caps or unlimited packages. nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/gaspump.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near East Orange to park my RV?

Cheesequake State Park (about 35 miles south) offers wooded RV sites with electric hookups near the shore. Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia (about 55 miles west) puts you next to the Delaware Water Gap. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (about 45 miles northwest) has full hookups and a lake. Pleasant Acres Farm in Sussex (about 50 miles northwest) is a family favorite. Book early through the state reservation portal for state parks, since prime summer weekends fill up months ahead.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from East Orange?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for RV camping East Orange travelers love, with May, June, September, and early October hitting that magic zone of warm days (65-80F), cool nights, and minimal humidity. July and August bring beach-perfect weather but also heat in the 85-95F range and afternoon thunderstorms, so plan AC-friendly stops. Fall foliage from late September through October turns the Delaware Water Gap and Skylands region into a postcard. Winter rentals are available too if you want a quiet shoulder-season escape, just look for an RV with a furnace and heated tanks. Pro tip: book your Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend at least 3 months ahead, those are the busiest weekends of the year.
weather.gov/phi/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be just fine, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and how to dump tanks. Most first-timers in the East Orange area choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer because they handle like a big van and fit comfortably on I-280, the Garden State Parkway, and Route 3. Skip narrow downtown streets and stick to highways for the first hour to build confidence. Pro tip: choose Delivery from your host so they drop the RV at your campground and you skip city driving altogether.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter Protection Plan, so if you get a flat on the New Jersey Turnpike, lock yourself out at a rest stop, or need a jump in a parking lot, one phone call gets a tech rolling. Your host is also your direct line for questions about the RV itself, like how to reset the inverter or troubleshoot the fridge, and most respond within minutes. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip via the app or Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave East Orange so it is one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from East Orange?
An RV road trip from East Orange opens up the entire Northeast. Head about 70 miles west to the Delaware Water Gap for hiking and tubing, 120 miles north to the Catskills for waterfalls and small-town charm, or 160 miles south to Cape May for Victorian beaches and dolphin cruises. The Adirondacks are about 250 miles north, and Acadia National Park in Maine is a stunning multi-day loop. Cross-border trips into Canada are allowed with many hosts (confirm via message before booking), and the drive to Niagara Falls runs about 400 miles. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage stops at the U.S. border. Pro tip: take I-80 west to avoid Manhattan traffic entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan around real-world numbers and you will avoid surprises. Class B campervans typically get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes return 8-12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes average 6-10 MPG, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New Jersey is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps for you (no tip required). For a 500-mile loop from East Orange through the Poconos and back in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $275 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey before crossing into Pennsylvania or New York, where prices are often higher per gallon.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/gaspump.htmHow far in advance should I book a campground near East Orange?
For summer weekends and holiday stretches, book your campground 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for popular spots like Cheesequake, Stokes State Forest, and High Point State Park. New Jersey state parks use the state reservation portal as the official booking system, with windows that open months in advance for prime locations. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City takes reservations directly through their website and stays busy year-round thanks to NYC access. Midweek and shoulder season (April-May, September-October) are far easier to book last-minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the reservation opening date if you want a lakeside site at High Point over July 4th.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around East Orange?
East Orange sits in one of the densest regions in the country, so plan your route smart and you will be golden. Avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels in tall RVs, and remember that the Garden State Parkway has cars-only sections south of Exit 105 (RVs are fine north of there, but check axle restrictions). I-280, I-78, and Route 3 handle big rigs comfortably. Traffic peaks weekday rush hours (7-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.), so target a 10 a.m. or post-7 p.m. departure. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December to March. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app to avoid low-clearance parkways like the Palisades and Merritt.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/restrictions/What amenities do campgrounds near East Orange offer?
Most campgrounds within an hour or two of East Orange offer water, electric (30/50 amp), and sewer hookups at standard RV sites, plus dump stations, fresh-water fill-up taps, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi at private parks. Liberty Harbor RV Park has full hookups and a dump station right on the Hudson. State park campgrounds like Stokes and Bass River typically offer electric and water but not sewer at the site, so you will dump on the way out. Most parks sell firewood on-site (New Jersey has firewood movement rules to protect against pests, so do not bring your own) and bagged ice. Pro tip: confirm your RV's amperage with your host so you bring the right adapter for older campgrounds.
nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/pi/prog/firewood.htmlWhat is inside a typical East Orange RV rental?
Most rentals come fully equipped so you can move in and start your trip. Expect a queen or king bed, additional bunks or convertible dinette beds (sleeping anywhere from 2 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many motorhome rentals East Orange hosts offer also include a TV, awning, outdoor chairs, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some have onboard hotspots, others rely on your phone. Each listing spells out exactly what is included plus add-ons like bike racks, kayaks, kitchen kits, and bedding packages. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group size exactly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Orange%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my rental?
Popular add-ons for East Orange rentals include unlimited mileage upgrades, extra generator hours, kitchen and linen kits, bike racks, kayaks or SUPs, portable grills, and pet packages. Delivery and full setup at your campsite are among the most-requested extras. Mileage policies vary by host, but many include 100-150 free miles per night with extra miles billed at a per-mile rate set by the host. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home, but many offer delivery to Newark Liberty Airport (just 6 miles away), Liberty Harbor RV Park, or your driveway. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit if you are flying in, you can walk off the plane and into a ready-to-roll RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Orange%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host in cash, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. The deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is only charged if there is damage outside what the Protection Plan covers. Pro tip: do a quick time-stamped video walkaround at pickup and dropoff with your host. It prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your East Orange RV trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent a campervan in East Orange for a quick NYC trip?
Yes, a campervan rental in East Orange is one of the smartest ways to see New York City without driving into Manhattan. Class B campervans (think Mercedes Sprinter conversions) are easy to drive, fit standard parking spots, and get 18-22 MPG. Park overnight at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (just 12 miles east, with skyline views and PATH train access into Manhattan in about 15 minutes), then explore the city car-free. Filter for Class B / Campervan on RVezy and look for hosts offering delivery if you would rather skip the pickup drive. Pro tip: book Liberty Harbor at least a month ahead, it is the only true RV park within sight of Manhattan and sells out fast.
