Campgrounds near Elizabeth, New Jersey
Elizabeth sits on the western shore of Newark Bay in Union County, within a dense stretch of the New York metropolitan area. RV travelers using it as a base have two categories of options: urban parks with hookups that put Manhattan within a short transit ride, and wooded county, state, and national parks a short drive inland or south along the Jersey Shore.
Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest RV park to New York City, located at 11 Marin Blvd with 30/50-amp electric, water, a dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry. East across the harbor, Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area operates the Camp Gateway Brooklyn campground on former airfield land in the Jamaica Bay unit of the National Park Service.
For a traditional wooded stay, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township is a 2,388-acre Monmouth County park with 64 pull-through family campsites around a 17-acre lake. Camp Wyanokie, a rustic 150-acre preserve in the Highlands, and Pine Cone Campgrounds round out the nearby options with primitive and family-style settings.
Things to do near Elizabeth
The dominant draw is New York City access. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, an NY Waterway ferry runs Monday to Friday to Pier 11 at the foot of Wall Street, and the Grove Street PATH station is about five blocks up Marin Blvd, connecting to the World Trade Center and midtown Manhattan. Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty ferry, and Newark's Branch Brook Park are all within a short drive.
Inland, hiking and paddling dominate. At Turkey Swamp Park, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and paddleboats on the 17-acre lake, and anglers with a New Jersey license fish for bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. The park also has eight miles of trails, four playgrounds, and open playfields.
Floyd Bennett Field adds cycling on old taxiways, an archery range, historic hangars, and easy access to Jacob Riis Park beach on the Rockaway Peninsula.

Season selection matters more here than at year-round Sun Belt destinations. Turkey Swamp Park runs a defined season, with the family campground open April 1 through November 15 for tents, travel trailers, and motor homes up to 40 feet. Water service at Turkey Swamp is seasonal, typically running from about April 15 through November 15, while electric service is available throughout the camping season.
Summer is peak booking season for the county and national park campgrounds, and weekends fill weeks in advance, especially around holidays. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and better site availability. Weekend and holiday activities at Turkey Swamp run May through September, aligning with the busiest months.
Winter narrows the field. Liberty Harbor RV Park is open 365 days a year and accepts check-ins 24/7 even when the office is closed. Most wooded parks in the region close or limit services from mid-November through March, so cold-weather RVers typically default to Liberty Harbor.

Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator, and this affects planning windows. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field takes bookings through Recreation.gov, with reservations accepted up to six months in advance and required at least a day ahead of arrival. Same-day walk-ups are possible when sites are available. There is a 14-night maximum stay.
Turkey Swamp Park is managed by the Monmouth County Park System. Reservations open on January 1 for the upcoming season and can be made online or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286. Of the 64 sites, 52 are reservable with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, and 12 are first-come, first-served. Full payment is required at booking.
Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations by phone or through its website. Camp Wyanokie books through its own site for rustic tent camping only and cannot host RVs. Pine Cone Campgrounds is booked directly through the operator.
What to expect on site
Site character varies sharply. Liberty Harbor RV Park is a basic but practical option with a prime waterfront location. The park is essentially a paved marina lot with hookups rather than a traditional campground; sites sit close together with minimal privacy, but staff are generally friendly, security operates around the clock, and access is controlled through the marina entrance. Expect city noise and harbor views.
Turkey Swamp is a different experience. The campground has 64 wooded pull-through sites with water and electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, laundry, and a self-serve dump station, set amid 2,388 acres of pitch pine and oak.
Floyd Bennett Field is more exposed: RV sites are large open paved areas with no shade, and restroom and shower trailers are shared. Camp Wyanokie is primitive, with no running water, electricity, or Wi-Fi in the campsites, just latrines, fire pits, hiking trails, and a small lake on 150 wooded acres.
