Camping near Finderne, New Jersey
Finderne is a small community within Bridgewater Township in Somerset County, central New Jersey, about an hour west of New York City. The area sits along the Raritan River corridor with easy access to Interstate 287 and Route 22, which makes it a practical launch point for RV trips into the Hunterdon Highlands and Skylands region to the west.
Most of the campgrounds within reach of Finderne are state-run parks in the New Jersey State Park Service system. Voorhees State Park sits in the wooded hills of northern Hunterdon County and offers camping, hiking trails, and an observatory administered by the New Jersey Astronomical Association. Spruce Run Recreation Area is surrounded by the rolling hills of Hunterdon County and centers on a large reservoir popular with boaters and anglers.
Further north, Stephens State Park brings campers to the Musconetcong River corridor, where a rocky path follows the river past shaded picnic areas. The Saxton Falls area contains remains of one of the Morris Canal's twenty-three locks. Fla-Net Park and Goodland Country Club and Spa round out the closer-in options for RV travelers basing near Finderne.
Things to do near Finderne
Water recreation is a major draw at Spruce Run Recreation Area. The reservoir and its tributaries hold many species of fish including largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, yellow perch, and carp, and both streams are stocked by NJ Fish and Wildlife. Boating, sailing, and kayaking are popular, with a wind-warning light system at the boat launch that flashes when sustained winds reach 25 miles per hour.
Stephens State Park is centered on fly fishing and hiking. The Musconetcong River provides trout fishing, and NJ Fish and Wildlife stock the river with brown, rainbow, and brook trout in spring. Six miles of marked trails serve mountain biking, walking, and horseback riding, with surfaces that range from flat to steep and rocky.
At Voorhees State Park, families combine hiking with stargazing. The New Jersey Astronomical Association built an observatory on land leased from the state, and the facility houses a 26-inch reflector telescope with public night-sky programs offered year round.

The New Jersey State Park camping season is narrow. Family campsites, shelters, and group campsites are available from April 1 through October 31. That applies to Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, and Stephens State Park, so RV travelers planning a stay outside this window need to look to private campgrounds instead.
Spring and fall are the mildest windows for outdoor time, with cooler nights and lighter crowds. Summer runs warm and humid, and weekends fill quickly. Reservations are recommended, especially for peak summer weekends when campgrounds fill fast. Entrance fees are charged per vehicle from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day at Spruce Run, with different weekend and weekday rates for residents and non-residents.
Winter closes the campgrounds but keeps day use active. During the winter months, visitors go sledding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice sailing at Spruce Run, though ice skating is not permitted. Cold-weather RV travelers can day-trip from private parks in the region and return to base for the night.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book

Same-day reservations can be made online until 2:00 p.m., and walk-ins are accepted if space is available.
For RV travelers, hookup availability is limited and concentrated at Spruce Run. Spruce Run has 7 trailer-only campsites with water and electric 30/50 amp hook-ups, at sites 1 through 4 and 55 through 57. A sanitary dump station is available at Spruce Run Recreation Area from April 1 through October 31.
There is a two-night minimum and a fourteen-night maximum for stays. Fla-Net Park and Goodland Country Club and Spa are booked directly through their operators. Book well ahead for holiday weekends and July dates.

Black bears are found throughout New Jersey, so store food securely and do not attempt to attract them. Expect ticks in wooded areas through the warm months.
