Campgrounds near Fords
Fords is a small community in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, positioned between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. RV travelers use it as a base for both New York City access and the Jersey Shore, since no campgrounds sit inside Fords itself. The closest options fall into three distinct groups: an urban RV park across the Hudson River gateway, county and state park campgrounds in Monmouth County, and a National Park Service site in Brooklyn.
Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest full-hookup option and functions as the region's designated NYC-adjacent RV park. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township and Allaire State Park in Farmingdale sit roughly 30 to 45 minutes south and offer wooded sites in larger natural areas. Pine Cone Campgrounds provides a private-park alternative in the same corridor.
For a truly urban camping experience, Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, offers tent and RV sites on former airfield land along Jamaica Bay.
Things to do near Fords
Day trips from a Fords base cover a wide range. Manhattan is reachable via PATH from nearby Metropark or from Jersey City if staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park, which sits within walking distance of ferry and light-rail service to Lower Manhattan. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferries depart from Liberty State Park.
South of Fords, Allaire State Park features the historic 19th-century iron making town of Allaire Village and the Pine Creek Railroad, a narrow-gauge train ride. Turkey Swamp Park has a 17-acre lake for boating and fishing with boat rentals, 8 miles of trails, playgrounds, and large-group picnic facilities.
The Jersey Shore beaches at Point Pleasant, Belmar, and Sandy Hook are within an hour. Floyd Bennett Field includes grassland, saltmarshes, tidal mudflats, a marina, and a former airfield with a control tower and terminal that now houses a visitor center.

Camping season in this part of New Jersey is driven by state and county park calendars. The family campground at Turkey Swamp Park is open from April 1 to November 15 and accommodates tents and travel trailers. At Allaire State Park, group camping is open April 1 to December 15, while the family campsites are currently closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility; check the park's advisory before booking.
Liberty Harbor RV Park operates on a different rhythm. It is open year-round and accepts check-ins around the clock even when the office is closed. Floyd Bennett Field's campground has historically operated year-round, though colder-month operations depend on the current concessioner.
Summer weekends fill fastest at the state and county campgrounds, especially around the shore. Fall brings cooler nights and lighter demand, and early spring can be wet. Winter camping in the region is essentially limited to the urban RV park, since state park water and sanitary services are seasonal.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!
