Campgrounds and RV parks near Glen Ridge, NJ

Trip planning from Glen Ridge usually blends city days with park days. From Liberty Harbor, ferries within walking distance reach lower Manhattan, making sightseeing possible without driving a rig into the city. At Wawayanda State Park, a twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, the top of Wawayanda Mountain offers wide views, and more than forty miles of marked trails wind through forested hills around Lake Wawayanda. Camp Wyanokie has a large covered picnic pavilion, group and individual rustic campsites, fire pits, and charcoal grills, with hiking into Norvin Green State Forest. Beaver Pond opens up swimming, picnicking, and walking, with Bear Mountain State Park, Lake Tiorati Beach, and Lake Welch Beach nearby. Floyd Bennett Field has hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, a recreation complex with bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range.

The region has a four-season humid continental climate, and most state and federal campgrounds operate on a warm-weather calendar. Wawayanda State Park is open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond at Harriman runs a similar spring-to-fall season tied to the New York State Parks calendar. Spring and summer are the busiest stretches and the best times for paddling and swimming at Harriman, but fall and winter have their own appeal. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill earliest, especially at Beaver Pond and Wawayanda, because both draw heavy demand from the New York metropolitan area. Fall brings cool nights, foliage, and lighter crowds across the Highlands and Hudson Valley parks. Winter narrows the options sharply: Liberty Harbor RV Park stays open through the cold months while the inland state-park campgrounds close. Camping at Gateway's Floyd Bennett Field has been unavailable in recent seasons, so visitors should confirm status with the National Park Service before planning a stop there. Hurricane remnants and nor'easters can pass through in late summer and fall, so flexible dates help.

Hookups and amenities differ widely. Liberty Harbor offers sites with water and electric, a dump station, full restrooms with hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and views of the New York skyline, Statue of Liberty, and Liberty State Park. Beaver Pond has campsites for up to two tents and six persons per site, with select sites accommodating a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, picnic table and fire ring at each site, and centrally located full-service bathrooms with showers, but no electrical hookups for trailers and no pets permitted. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office, and there are no shower facilities; the park's campground consists of group sites requiring a seven-person minimum. Camp Wyanokie is rustic, with no running water, electricity, or Wi-Fi, only latrines, fire pits, and charcoal grills. Floyd Bennett Field, when open, has tent and RV parking sites with showers and running water but no hookups and no open fires.
