Campgrounds near Great Notch overview
Great Notch sits in Passaic County, New Jersey, roughly 15 miles west of Manhattan. The area gives RVers two very different camping options: a full-hookup urban RV park on the Hudson waterfront, and a cluster of rustic state park and forest campgrounds in the New Jersey Highlands and New York's Lower Hudson Valley within an hour's drive.
For RVers who want city access without driving into Manhattan, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is positioned as the closest RV park to New York City, with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, pull-through sites for big rigs, dump stations, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi.
For a woods-and-water trip, Wawayanda State Park and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park handle trailers and smaller motorhomes, while Camp Wyanokie and Floyd Bennett Field cover tent and mixed-use camping. Beaver Pond has no hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but it can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to about 30 feet long.
Things to do near Great Notch
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, families can reach Manhattan without driving in. Guests can walk to the Grove Street PATH station, which runs to 33rd Street and the World Trade Center, putting Midtown roughly a 15 minute ride away. The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island ferries, and Liberty State Park are all close by.
Inland, the Highlands deliver hiking, paddling, and swimming. Forested hills surround Lake Wawayanda creating a backdrop for canoeists, boaters and fishermen, while a 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park. At Beaver Pond, Lake Welch swimming beach is within walking distance, with access to Harriman State Park's extensive network of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail.
Camp Wyanokie adds trail access to Norvin Green State Forest, and Floyd Bennett Field offers bike paths, an archery range, and Jamaica Bay wildlife.

Season windows vary sharply by campground. Liberty Harbor RV Park is open year-round, so it works for shoulder-season and winter city trips when the state park grounds are shut. Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 to October 31. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping, with a regular reservation season running from around May through mid-October. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is generally open from mid-May through mid-October.
Spring and fall bring milder weather and lighter crowds, but nights can be cold and some park facilities operate on limited schedules. Late spring and summer are the busiest seasons and the best times for paddling and swimming in the Harriman lakes. Summer weekends fill fastest at every regional state park.
Winter closes most tent and RV grounds in the Highlands, though Wawayanda winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, ice skating and snowmobiling as day-use options.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Great Notch
Reservation systems differ by operator. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey State Park Service portal, which also handles other New Jersey state park campgrounds. Book well ahead for summer weekends, when Highlands sites go quickly.
Beaver Pond Campground uses the New York State Parks reservation platform, where sites can be reserved up to nine months in advance. Release times are early morning during the peak booking window, and walk-ins are not accepted.
Camping at Floyd Bennett Field is reserved online at recreation.gov, with advance reservations required at least a day ahead and a 14-night maximum stay. Liberty Harbor takes direct bookings by phone or online, and Camp Wyanokie handles reservations through its own website.
What to expect at Great Notch campgrounds
Amenity levels vary widely. Liberty Harbor is a paved, marina-adjacent lot with full hookups and city noise, not a woodsy site. Beaver Pond is more traditional: each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground provides bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities, plus a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is allowed at each campsite.
Wawayanda's family sites are basic. Water is not available at campsites; it must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Camp Wyanokie is tent-only, cannot accommodate RVs, and offers no running water, toilets, electricity, or Wi-Fi at campsites.
Bears, ticks, and mosquitoes are present in the Highlands. Secure food and plan for tick checks.
