Campgrounds near Harrison, New Jersey
Harrison sits directly across the Passaic River from Newark in the densely developed New Jersey Meadowlands, roughly ten miles west of Manhattan. There are no campgrounds within Harrison itself, but the town works well as a reference point for RV travelers heading to the New York City metro area. Options fan out in two directions: urban parking-style sites on the Hudson waterfront, and wooded state park campgrounds in the New Jersey Highlands and Lower Hudson Valley about an hour north.
The closest option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, which markets itself as the nearest RV park to New York City. For a national park experience, Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn offers tent and RV camping inside Gateway National Recreation Area, typically open from mid-May through mid-October.
North of the city, Beaver Pond Campground sits inside Harriman State Park in the Lower Hudson Valley, and Wawayanda State Park anchors the Highlands region near the New York border. Camp Wyanokie in West Milford rounds out the list as a rustic property adjoining Norvin Green State Forest.
Things to do near Harrison
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, Manhattan is the main attraction, with PATH trains and nearby ferries from Liberty State Park reaching Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Guests staying at Floyd Bennett Field can bike the old runways, visit the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and reach Jacob Riis Park beach by bicycle.
Up in the Highlands, Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area inside Harriman State Park, with access to swimming beaches and an extensive trail network including a section of the Appalachian Trail. Wawayanda State Park has a boat rental facility and launching ramp near the beach with canoes, rowboats and paddleboats, and gasoline motors are not permitted. Camp Wyanokie connects on foot to trails in Norvin Green State Forest.

The metro area has four distinct seasons with warm, humid summers and cold winters. Summer is peak booking season at every campground on this list, and weekends at Harriman and Wawayanda routinely fill months ahead. Weekday arrivals are noticeably quieter than Friday and Saturday nights.
Wawayanda and Beaver Pond operate on a spring-through-fall schedule. Wawayanda's group campsites are open April 1 to October 31, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field typically runs from mid-May through mid-October. Mosquitoes are a well-documented nuisance at Floyd Bennett Field in mid-summer, so bring repellent.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is the year-round exception. Winter at the inland parks means closed gates, but the Highlands trails remain open for day hikes. Wawayanda State Park sits at 1,140 feet and receives significant accumulations of snow in the winter months, supporting cross-country skiing and other permitted winter activities on designated trails.

Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book near Harrison
Reservation systems vary by operator, so plan by park. Beaver Pond at Harriman is booked through the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica portal or the call center at 1-800-456-2267, and reservations can be made up to nine months in advance. New Jersey state parks use a separate portal: online reservations for Wawayanda are made through the NJ DEP outdoors reservation site.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field takes reservations up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov, with a photo ID required at check-in. Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through its own website and phone line, and Camp Wyanokie handles reservations through its local operator. Book summer weekends and any holiday stay as early as the window opens.
What to expect at these campgrounds
Hookups and amenities differ sharply across these properties. Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a paved urban lot with skyline views rather than a wooded campground, offering water and electric sites, laundry, and hot showers. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field has no water, electric, or sewer hookups at the sites, though it provides restrooms, showers, and drinking water at central facilities.
Beaver Pond Campground is primitive: select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, there are no electrical hookups for trailers, pets are not permitted, and alcohol is prohibited. Camp Wyanokie cannot accommodate RVs and offers only basic rustic facilities. Bear-aware food storage is expected at all inland sites.

Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG. New Jersey gas prices typically sit near or slightly below the national average, and NJ is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your fuel at every station. Estimate your route mileage, divide by MPG, multiply by current price, and add a 15% buffer for idling and detours. Fill up in Harrison or Newark before you cross into New York or Pennsylvania, where prices often run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Harrison, NJ?
For the best campgrounds near Harrison, NJ, book early, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays. New Jersey state parks like Cheesequake, Round Valley, and Stokes State Forest accept reservations through the NJ State Park Service reservation system, and prime sites for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day can disappear within hours of release. Private parks like Liberty Harbor RV Park book through their own sites and fill quickly in summer. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are far easier, often available just a week out. Set a calendar reminder for the morning your target date opens so you can grab the best riverfront and lakefront sites.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Harrison, NJ for an RV?
Driving in Harrison, NJ is manageable in an RV as long as you plan around traffic and a few low-clearance spots. Stick to the New Jersey Turnpike and I-280 for the smoothest routes, both of which accommodate standard RV heights and lengths. Avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels with anything over 12 feet 1 inch tall, and note that trailers are restricted on much of the Garden State Parkway south of Exit 105. Rush hours (roughly 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) can be heavy, so plan pickups and drop-offs midday. Use the Trucker Path or RV Trip Wizard app to filter out low bridges and parkway restrictions automatically.

You'll have plenty of options for dump stations and fresh water near Harrison, NJ. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers full hookups and a dump station about 6 miles away. Cheesequake State Park has a public dump station for campers, and Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold offers similar amenities.
