Camping near Hawthorne, New Jersey
Hawthorne sits in Passaic County in northern New Jersey, roughly twenty miles from Manhattan and within easy driving range of the New Jersey Highlands, Ramapo Mountains, and the lower Hudson Valley. That geography gives RV renters two very different kinds of options within an hour of town: rustic state-park and state-forest campgrounds in the wooded hills to the north and west, and full-hookup urban RV parking closer to the harbor.
To the north, Wawayanda State Park covers roughly 40,000 acres of rock outcrops, dense woods, and wetlands, and Harriman State Park sits just over the New York line, where Beaver Pond Campground is located in Harriman State Park adjacent to Lake Welch, with select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Camp Wyanokie and Black Bear Campground fill in the Ramapo and Warwick Valley areas, while Liberty Harbor RV Park covers travelers who prefer to base near Jersey City and the ferries into Manhattan.
Things to do near Hawthorne
Hiking dominates the region. Harriman State Park alone has more than 200 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, plus 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. A twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through Wawayanda, and more than forty miles of trails are marked in the park, including the climb to Pinwheel Vista above Vernon Valley.
On the water, a boat rental facility and launching ramp sit near the beach at Wawayanda Lake, where canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats can be rented and gasoline motors are not permitted. A protected swimming beach is available at Beaver Pond when lifeguards are on duty. For day trips, families can pair a campground stay with Jersey City, the Meadowlands, or the farms and orchards of Warwick and Vernon.

Most public campgrounds in the area run a spring-to-fall season. The Wawayanda State Park campground, operated by the Division of Parks and Forestry, operates from April through October with drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in access options, and group campsites are available from April 1 to October 31, with a minimum requirement of seven people per site. Beaver Pond typically opens in April for the reservation season and runs through late October.
Summer is the peak window. Harriman is an hour from New York City and a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Wawayanda offers a lifeguarded swimming beach from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and fall brings cool nights and strong foliage color through October.
Winter closes most tent and RV loops in the state parks. Liberty Harbor RV Park is the practical year-round option for RV renters who need to stay in the region during the off-season.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Hawthorne
New Jersey and New York run separate reservation systems. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park are made at camping.nj.gov, the state's official portal for Division of Parks and Forestry campgrounds. Booking early matters for summer weekends, and popular loops release quickly once the window opens.
For Beaver Pond and other Harriman sites, use the New York State Parks system on Reserve America. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released from March 15 through Labor Day at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday, and from the day after Labor Day through March 14 at 9AM daily. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3pm. Private parks such as Liberty Harbor RV Park and Black Bear Campground take bookings directly through their own websites.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Amenities vary sharply by campground. State-park sites in this region are rustic. At Beaver Pond each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, with shared full-service bathrooms centrally located, and there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Campers can also access clean restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station for RVs. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
RV length limits matter. The primitive Beaver Pond Campground has no hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but it can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds. Expect black bears in the highlands and plan food storage accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hawthorne, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hawthorne, NJ?
There's an RV rental in Hawthorne for just about every budget. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 nightly depending on size, age, and season. Summer weekends and weeks around Independence Day book up first and command peak prices, so reserving early saves money. For a cheap RV rental in Hawthorne, look at midweek pickups in May or September and filter for older travel trailers, which are often the best value. Pro tip: many Hawthorne-area hosts offer weekly discounts, so a 7-night Jersey Shore trip can cost less per night than a long weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hawthorne%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hawthorne, NJ?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hawthorne. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under standard weight limits, so your everyday Class D license covers the vast majority of RVs on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and you'll verify your ID right through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most guests are surprised how quick the verification step is, and you'll be browsing RV rental NJ listings the same day.

Yes, every RV rental in Hawthorne booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind on the road. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers during checkout, and you (not the host) choose the level of coverage that fits your trip. Whether you're heading to High Point State Park or just parking in a friend's driveway in Bergen County, help is one phone call away. Pro tip: pick your protection level based on trip length and mileage, longer trips usually justify the higher tier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hawthorne RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy has a clear cancellation policy that includes a money-back grace period right after booking, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and the policy is managed by RVezy directly, not by individual hosts, so you'll get consistent treatment no matter which Hawthorne listing you choose. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book early to secure the best motorhome rental Hawthorne options, then use the grace period to double-check dates, drivers, and your route before fully committing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hawthorne RV rental?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Hawthorne options are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many Bergen and Passaic County hosts are pet owners themselves and happily accommodate furry co-pilots, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Once you're on the road, your pup will love Goffle Brook Park right in Hawthorne for pre-trip walks, and most New Jersey state parks including Ringwood and Wawayanda allow leashed dogs on trails and in designated campground areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a portable water bowl since NJ summers are hot and humid.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/Can the RV be delivered to me in Hawthorne?
Yes, RV delivery Hawthorne is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your home, a nearby campground, or a Jersey Shore destination, then set up the hookups, level the rig, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery is ideal if you don't want to drive a larger motorhome through Route 4 traffic or over the George Washington Bridge. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, along with their per-mile delivery fees. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a stationary campground stay (like Camp Taylor in Columbia or Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City) turns your rental into a turnkey vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hawthorne%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Hawthorne, NJ?

From Hawthorne you're roughly 130 miles to Cape May, 90 miles to the Poconos, 230 miles to the Finger Lakes, and about 230 miles to Washington, DC. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state Hawthorne RV trip, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, the savings on a 1,000-mile loop can be hundreds of dollars.

Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City puts you 25 minutes away with Manhattan skyline views, perfect for a city-meets-camping weekend. Worthington State Forest along the Delaware Water Gap is another favorite, roughly 75 minutes out. Pro tip: New Jersey state park sites can be reserved several months in advance, summer weekends fill quickly, so book your campground before your RV.
camping.nj.gov/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Hawthorne, NJ?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Hawthorne, with the prime window running from mid-May through early October. Spring brings 60 to 75 degree days perfect for Delaware Water Gap hiking, summer (July to August) averages 80 to 88 degrees and is ideal for Jersey Shore trips (expect humidity), and September to mid-October delivers crisp 55 to 75 degree weather and fall foliage in the Ramapo Mountains. Winters get cold (20s to 40s) with occasional snow, but four-season RVs are available year-round on RVezy. Pro tip: book mid-September for the rare combo of warm beach days, fewer crowds, lower rates, and early autumn color in northern New Jersey.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great hands. First time renting an RV is honestly easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, water system, slide-outs, propane, dump procedures, and dashboard controls before you leave. You can message your host with questions before booking, during your trip, and after. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need backup. For a Hawthorne RV trip, first-timers often love starting with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Hawthorne, both are easy to drive and park. Pro tip: do a short shakedown stay at Campgaw or Ringwood before tackling a longer trip, you'll build confidence in 48 hours.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003359054-RentersWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway or a battery issue at a Pocono campground is just a phone call away. Roadside help covers services like towing, jump-starts, lockouts, tire service, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a direct resource for quick troubleshooting via the RVezy messaging system, often a 30-second text solves common questions like resetting the generator or fixing a finicky slide-out. Pro tip: before you leave Hawthorne, save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone, and snap photos of the breaker panel and water pump location during your walkthrough.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Hawthorne RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, multi-state and even cross-border travel is very doable from Hawthorne. Interstate travel is allowed on virtually all RVezy bookings, so the entire East Coast is open. Popular routes include New England fall foliage, the Outer Banks, and Shenandoah National Park. Travel into Canada (Niagara Falls or Montreal, both about 7 to 8 hours away) is allowed by many hosts but requires host approval since insurance coverage needs to be confirmed in advance. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your itinerary if Canada is on your list, getting the green light upfront avoids any trip-day surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hawthorne RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to estimate. Campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and most trucks pulling travel trailers come in around 10 to 14 MPG. In New Jersey an attendant pumps your gas, there is no self-serve. For a 500-mile weekend in a Class C at 10 MPG and $3.50/gallon, budget around $175 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hawthorne or along Route 23 before heading north, prices on the New York Thruway and Pennsylvania Turnpike service plazas are often higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hawthorne?
For the best sites, book your campground as soon as your dates are firm. New Jersey state parks (Ringwood, Worthington, Stokes, Bass River) open reservations several months in advance through the official ReserveNJStateParks portal, and summer weekends near Hawthorne often sell out quickly after opening. Private parks like Camp Taylor and Liberty Harbor RV Park use their own systems or Campspot and typically allow booking 9 to 12 months out. For Labor Day, July 4th, and fall foliage weekends, lock in 4 to 6 months ahead. Pro tip: book your campground first, then your RV on RVezy, that way you can match RV length to your specific site's max length (usually 30 to 40 feet in NJ).
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Hawthorne, NJ?
Driving from Hawthorne is very manageable once you know a few local quirks. Route 208 and Route 4 are easy exits out of town, while I-287 gets you north toward the Catskills and south toward Pennsylvania quickly. Avoid the George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel in an RV during rush hour (7-10 AM and 4-7 PM), and skip the Palisades Interstate Parkway entirely, it bans commercial and oversized vehicles including most RVs. Watch for low clearances on older parkways like the Garden State Parkway north of Exit 105. Pro tip: plan your route using a trucker-friendly GPS or the RV Trip Wizard app, and aim to leave Hawthorne before 6:30 AM or after 10 AM to dodge the worst Bergen County traffic.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hawthorne?
Northern NJ campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable trip. Most private parks like Camp Taylor and Liberty Harbor offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. NJ state parks generally offer electric and water at the site with a centralized dump station and potable water fill, plus modern restrooms and showers. You'll find propane refills at most private campgrounds and at Suburban Propane locations along Route 23. Pro tip: if you're heading to a state park without sewer hookups, plan your dump and freshwater fill at the campground's central station on the way out, and pack a 25-foot freshwater hose plus a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter for flexibility.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Hawthorne?
More than you'd expect. Most RV rentals in Hawthorne come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional convertible sleeping for 2 to 6 more people, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for every passenger are standard. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi hotspots and solar setups are increasingly common, especially on campervans. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities checklist carefully, and message the host if you need something specific like a portable crib, bike rack, or extra propane, many will add it for free or a small fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hawthorne%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get with my Hawthorne RV rental?
Hawthorne hosts offer add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, kayak racks, portable grills, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, especially for first-timers, with fees usually $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pickup and dropoff is typically at the host's home in or near Hawthorne, with flexible time windows. Mileage policies vary, 100 to 150 free miles per day is typical, with unlimited-mileage options available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking, hosts often discount packages versus a la carte requests later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hawthorne%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Hawthorne, you'll pay through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, no cash or e-transfers to the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few days of dropoff. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, take dated photos and video of the exterior, interior, and odometer, and you'll sail through the deposit return with zero friction. It's the easiest way to protect yourself and start your Hawthorne RV trip on the right foot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Hawthorne, NJ?
Hawthorne is one of the best East Coast launchpads for an RV road trip. Top picks within easy range: the Jersey Shore (Cape May or Wildwood, about 2.5 hours and 130 miles south), the Pocono Mountains in PA (90 minutes, 70 miles west) for lakes and waterfalls, the Catskills in NY (2 hours, 100 miles north) for hiking and tubing, the Finger Lakes (about 4.5 hours, 230 miles) for wineries and waterfalls, and coastal Maine routes toward Acadia (about 8 hours via Boston). For a longer family RV trip Hawthorne adventure, Shenandoah National Park is about 5.5 hours south. Pro tip: shoulder season trips to Cape May in late September deliver warm beaches, lower campsite rates, and the famous Monarch butterfly migration.
