Camping near Kean University
Kean University sits in Union Township in northeastern New Jersey, roughly 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan and within an hour's drive of the Jersey Shore, the Watchung Reservation, and the northern Pine Barrens. The area is dense and suburban, so RV camping happens at a mix of urban waterfront lots, National Park Service sites across the harbor, and state or county parks farther out.
The closest option for a full-hookup urban base is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, which puts renters minutes from PATH trains and ferries into Manhattan. Across New York Harbor, Floyd Bennett Field is the campground inside Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, run by the National Park Service.
For a more traditional woods-and-lake trip, renters typically head 30 to 60 miles out to Camp Wyanokie in the northern highlands, Turkey Swamp Park in Monmouth County, or Pine Cone Campgrounds in the central part of the state.
Things to do near Kean University
The Kean University area works well as a hub for both city and outdoor days. Renters based at Liberty Harbor RV Park can walk five blocks to the Grove Street PATH station or catch a ferry directly from the marina, reaching Manhattan in about 15 minutes, cutting out the hassle of driving an RV into the city.
At Floyd Bennett Field, campers have access to hiking trails, a boat launch, and an on-site archery range, with Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge next door drawing birders during spring and fall migration. Visitors bike the trails, fish the bay, and join ranger-led programs while watching migratory birds along the Atlantic flyway.
Farther inland, Turkey Swamp Park offers a small lake for paddling and fishing, Camp Wyanokie provides rustic hiking in the Wyanokie Highlands, and day trips reach Liberty State Park, the Delaware Water Gap, and the boardwalks at Point Pleasant and Asbury Park.

The practical RV season around Kean University runs from mid-spring through late fall. The campground at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October, so winter trips there are not an option. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open from April 1 to November 15, and most other private and county parks follow a similar pattern, though Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round for renters who need a base near the city.
Spring brings migratory birds to Jamaica Bay and wildflowers to the highlands, but rainfall is steady and mosquito activity ramps up by late May. Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy, with weekend sites at popular parks often booked weeks ahead.
September and October are the strongest shoulder months for RV travel here. Humidity drops, biting insects fade, and hardwood foliage in the northern New Jersey highlands typically peaks in the second half of October.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book near Kean University
Reservation systems vary by operator. Reservations for the campground at Floyd Bennett Field can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, and the RV loop is small, so weekend dates fill quickly once released.
Turkey Swamp Park uses the Monmouth County Park System's own online reservation system, available on the Campgrounds page at MonmouthCountyParks.com or by phone, and reservations are accepted after January 1st for that year. New Jersey state parks in the region book separately through the ReserveNJStateParks portal.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is open 365 days a year and takes reservations directly by phone or through its own website, as do most private operators such as Pine Cone Campgrounds. For summer weekends and any holiday period, book two to three months out; shoulder-season midweek stays can often be secured within a week or two of arrival.
What to expect near Kean University
Campgrounds close to Kean University lean urban. Liberty Harbor RV Park caters to all RV types with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, pull-through sites, dump stations, modern showers and restrooms, laundry, and free Wi-Fi, but it is a paved lot with city views rather than a wooded retreat, and traffic noise is part of the experience. Floyd Bennett Field offers seasonal showers, drinking water, flush toilets, picnic tables, and a dump station, with parking for RVs and accessibility for campers with disabilities, though sites sit on the open pavement of a former airfield without individual hookups.
Turkey Swamp Park has wooded campsites with electrical service, water service, drinking water, modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry, a self-serve dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables. Cell coverage is strong across the region. Drivers should expect heavy traffic on I-78, I-95, and the Garden State Parkway, and low clearances on some parkway bridges that restrict RV routing.
