Campgrounds near Keyport, New Jersey
Keyport sits on Raritan Bay in northern Monmouth County, within easy reach of both the Jersey Shore and the New York metro area. RV travelers using Keyport as a base can choose between wooded inland campgrounds in the Freehold area, a state park with a historic village, and an urban RV park across the bay in Jersey City.
The closest full-service option is Turkey Swamp Park, a wooded county park with a 17-acre lake for fishing and boating. A short drive south, Pine Cone Campgrounds in Freehold offers year-round sites, and Allaire State Park sits along the Manasquan River in a forested setting roughly half an hour away.
For travelers who want to visit Manhattan without moving the rig, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is positioned as the closest RV park to New York City, located at 11 Marin Blvd. Farther inland near Six Flags Great Adventure, Tip Tam Camping Resort caters to families with a range of sites.
Things to do near Keyport
On-site recreation varies widely by campground. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open April 1 through November 15, provides facilities for tent camping and travel trailers, and all campsites are pull-through with water and electric hookups. Hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians can enjoy the pitch pine and oak trees on the park's multi-use trails, and the 17-acre lake supports fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.
At Allaire State Park, families can combine camping with living history. The park is probably best known for its historic 19th-century iron making town, Allaire Village, and the Pine Creek Railroad, a narrow-gauge train ride operated by the NJ Museum of Transportation. The Manasquan River provides opportunities for freshwater fishing.
Nearby attractions round out the trip: Six Flags Great Adventure, Sandy Hook beaches, and the boardwalks at Point Pleasant and Seaside. From Liberty Harbor, a short walk reaches the PATH train and ferry service into Manhattan.

Camping season in this part of New Jersey is concentrated between spring and late fall. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open April 1 to November 15, and Allaire's family campsites and shelters are open April 1 to December 15, with the trailer sanitary station open April 15 through October 15. Note that Allaire's family campsites have been closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility, with group camping continuing to operate on the standard April to December schedule. Pine Cone Campgrounds in Freehold and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City operate year round.
Summer weekends and holidays draw the heaviest demand, especially at the state and county parks. Shoulder months, roughly April to mid-June and September to October, tend to have milder temperatures, fewer bugs, and better site availability.
Winter camping is limited to a handful of properties. Snow, freezing overnight lows, and closed water systems at many parks make late fall through early spring a niche season, generally suited to self-contained rigs. Tropical storm risk along the coast peaks from August into October, so travelers should watch forecasts when booking late-summer trips.

How to book campgrounds near Keyport
Public parks and private resorts use different reservation systems, so plan by property. For Allaire State Park, online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov, or by calling the park office at 732-938-2371. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance with a two-night minimum stay.
Turkey Swamp Park is managed by Monmouth County. Reservations are available online or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after 12 p.m. daily. A two-night minimum applies on weekends (Friday and Saturday), with three nights required on holiday weekends and one-night stays available Sunday through Thursday. Advanced reservations are accepted after January 1st for the current calendar year only.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Liberty Harbor books through its own site and CampLife, while Pine Cone Campgrounds and Tip Tam Camping Resort take reservations by phone or through their websites.
What to expect at Keyport campgrounds
Site styles differ sharply across the area. All 64 campsites at Turkey Swamp Park are pull-through with water and electric hookups and a self-serve sanitary dump station, while Allaire has no hookups at its 45 tent and trailer sites, which matters for longer stays in an RV. Pine Cone Campgrounds and Tip Tam Camping Resort offer full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service.
Liberty Harbor is an urban lot rather than a wooded park. It is essentially a parking lot at a marina with electric and water connections, a dump station, full restrooms with hot showers, a laundry room, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Sites offer views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
Pets are generally welcome on leash. Black bears are present in New Jersey parks, so follow bear safety protocols, and ticks are common in wooded areas from spring through fall.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Keyport, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Keyport, NJ?
RV rental in Keyport, NJ is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially compared to NYC hotel prices just across the harbor. Travel trailers typically start around $75 to $125 per night, campervans and Class B rigs run about $150 to $225, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes generally range from $200 to $325 per night. For a cheap RV rental in Keyport, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of April, May, or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filtering by Instant Book and longer trip lengths often unlocks better nightly rates, so a 5 to 7 night Jersey Shore loop can be one of the best-value family vacations on the East Coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keyport,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Keyport, NJ?
Good news: in New Jersey, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Keyport for any motorhome or trailer under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and no special endorsement required. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow, so there are no extra trips to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set to cruise the Garden State Parkway like a local.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Keyport covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Keyport, NJ booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your booking. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle, giving you real financial peace of mind even if a Jersey Shore mishap dents the awning or you scrape a low branch at Cheesequake State Park. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers, so you can choose the level of coverage that best fits your trip during checkout. Pro tip: select your protection level before you hit the Garden State Parkway and you can focus entirely on the boardwalks, beaches, and Bayshore sunsets.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Keyport RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every Keyport, NJ booking (not the host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If your plans shift, just open your trip in the RVezy app and the support team will walk you through your options. If the host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so you are never left stranded. Pro tip: reserve early for summer Jersey Shore weekends since the best rigs disappear fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Keyport RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Keyport is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you will see plenty of rigs from local hosts who welcome four-legged passengers. Once you are on the road, Cheesequake State Park allows leashed dogs on most trails, the Henry Hudson Trail running through Keyport and Aberdeen is a flat paved path perfect for morning walks, and Sandy Hook in the Gateway National Recreation Area offers off-season pet access to the beach (generally after Labor Day through mid-March). Pro tip: message the host through the listing to confirm pet fees, and bring a towel because Raritan Bay sand sticks to wet paws.
nps.gov/gate/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Keyport?
Yes, RV delivery in Keyport is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are nervous about driving a motorhome through Monmouth County traffic or the Garden State Parkway. Many RVezy hosts in the Bayshore area offer delivery and setup directly to Cheesequake State Park, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, or even your driveway in Keyport, Hazlet, or Matawan. They will level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see local options. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for first time renting an RV, since you skip the parking-lot learning curve entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keyport,%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel on a Keyport RV road trip?
Plenty far, and many RVezy hosts in Keyport even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage so you can roam without watching the odometer. From Keyport you are perfectly positioned for an East Coast adventure: Cape May at the southern tip of the Jersey Shore is about 2.5 hours (around 130 miles) south, the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania are roughly 2 hours west, Lake George in upstate New York sits about 5 hours north, and Acadia National Park in Maine is a classic 8 to 9 hour bucket-list run. Pro tip: check the host's mileage policy before booking, and if you are planning a long RV road trip from Keyport, filter for unlimited miles to save serious money.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keyport,%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Keyport, NJ?
You have great options within an easy drive for RV camping in Keyport. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan is just minutes away with wooded sites, restrooms, showers, and a sanitary dump station (seasonal, typically April through October). Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township, about 35 minutes south, offers sites with electric and water hookups plus a small lake for fishing. Allaire State Park near Farmingdale, about 40 minutes away, sits beside the Manasquan River and offers electric sites. For an NYC skyline view, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is roughly 45 minutes north. Pro tip: reserve Cheesequake on the New Jersey Outdoors portal as soon as the booking window opens.
njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoorsWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Keyport?
The sweet spot for a Keyport RV trip is mid-May through early October, when Bayshore temperatures typically sit between 65F and 85F and the Jersey Shore comes alive. June and September are local insider favorites: warm enough for ocean swimming, but without the peak July and August humidity and Parkway traffic. Fall foliage through the Delaware Water Gap typically peaks in mid to late October, making for a stunning shoulder-season escape. Winters in Keyport often dip into the 25 to 40F range with occasional snow, so most state park campgrounds close November through March. Pro tip: book a winterized rig with a furnace if you want to chase Pocono ski weekends, since several Keyport hosts list four-season RVs perfect for cold-weather camping.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use it?
You will be in great hands. Every RVezy host in Keyport gives you a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery), covering the generator, propane, water hookups, slide-outs, leveling jacks, and waste tanks step by step. They want you to succeed, and most leave you with a printed cheat sheet plus their cell number for questions on the road. RVezy's support team is also a tap away in the app. For first time renting an RV, consider a Class C motorhome or travel trailer in the 22 to 28 foot range, which handles New Jersey's narrower roads well. Pro tip: spend your first night close to home at Cheesequake State Park to build confidence before a longer Jersey Shore trip.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlWhat if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You are never alone out there. Every Keyport RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway, a dead battery at Sandy Hook, or a propane issue at Turkey Swamp Park is just a phone call away. The roadside team dispatches help directly to your location, whether you are minutes from home in Keyport or hours away in the Adirondacks. Your host is also available by phone or message for quick troubleshooting of RV-specific quirks. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact info to your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Keyport RV rental into New York or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is totally normal for an RV rental in New Jersey, and Keyport's location near the Garden State Parkway and Route 35 makes it a perfect launch pad. You can cross into New York via the Outerbridge Crossing or Goethals Bridge to reach the Catskills, head south on I-95 toward Virginia and the Outer Banks, or run west into Pennsylvania for the Poconos. Just confirm with your host before crossing into Canada, since cross-border travel requires advance approval. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: avoid the Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge during rush hour, since tall RVs and NYC commuter traffic do not mix.
panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/en/index.htmlWhat should I budget for fuel on a Keyport RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but New Jersey actually helps you out: gas prices here often run below the national average, and full-service stations are required by state law (no pumping your own). Expect roughly 7 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for campervans, and around 12 to 16 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a 500-mile loop from Keyport to Cape May and back, budget roughly $175 to $275 in fuel for a mid-size Class C, depending on current prices. Pro tip: fuel up in Keyport or Hazlet before heading north into New York, where gas prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Keyport?
For state park campgrounds near Keyport, NJ, book as early as possible. New Jersey Outdoors handles reservations through njportal.com/dep/njoutdoors, and Cheesequake State Park sites for summer weekends often fill within days of opening. Aim for 3 to 4 months ahead for peak July and August dates, and 4 to 6 weeks ahead for spring and fall. Private parks in the broader region take reservations months out for holiday weekends. Pro tip: if you strike out at Cheesequake, check for cancellations on Sunday evenings when many holders release sites, or book a Tuesday to Thursday stay for much better availability and quieter campgrounds.
njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoorsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Keyport?
Driving an RV around Keyport is manageable once you know a few local quirks. The Garden State Parkway has commercial vehicle restrictions on its northern section, so plan ahead when heading toward NYC and use I-287, the New Jersey Turnpike, or Route 9 for larger rigs. Watch for low parkway overpasses and avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, where propane-equipped RVs are restricted. Summer Shore-bound traffic peaks Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Pro tip: a campervan rental in Keyport is the easiest first RV for navigating the narrow streets of Red Bank, Asbury Park, or Cape May without stress.
state.nj.us/turnpike/Where can I dump tanks and refill water near Keyport?
You have several convenient options for tank dumping and fresh water near Keyport. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan has a seasonal sanitary dump station and potable water fill for registered campers (call ahead about non-camper access and fees). Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold also offers a dump station about 35 minutes south. Most full-hookup sites at private parks handle everything onsite. Expect 30-amp and 50-amp electric, water spigots, and sewer at full-hookup sites; state park sites typically offer electric and water only. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground since potable fills along the Jersey Shore can be scarce on summer weekends.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlWhat features and amenities should I expect in a Keyport RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in Keyport come fully equipped for a comfortable Jersey Shore trip: a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, and microwave, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (a must for humid NJ summers), a furnace for shoulder-season nights, and dinette seating that converts to extra sleeping space. Many hosts also include a generator for boondocking, an outdoor awning, a TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Seatbelts in the cab are standard, and Class C and Class A rigs typically include belted passenger seats in the living area. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list, then message the host to confirm sleep count and whether linens are included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keyport,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Keyport RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Keyport offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linen and bedding kits, kitchen packages with pots, plates, and utensils, generator use beyond a daily allowance, bike racks, kayak racks, camp chairs, outdoor grills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Mileage policies vary by host: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night and charge a per-mile fee beyond that, while others offer unlimited mileage. Delivery to Cheesequake State Park or your driveway is typically priced per mile round-trip. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book to lock in pricing and save the host a last-minute scramble.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keyport,%20New%20JerseyHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside the RVezy platform: you pay securely by credit card when you book, and your funds are protected until your trip begins. The host sets a refundable security deposit, which is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup rather than charged outright. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip ends. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off in Keyport, NJ, including odometer and tank gauges, and you will avoid the vast majority of deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there great road trip routes starting from Keyport, NJ?
Keyport is one of the most underrated RV launch points on the East Coast. A classic Jersey Shore loop runs south on the Garden State Parkway to Island Beach State Park (about 1 hour), Long Beach Island (about 1.5 hours), Atlantic City (about 2 hours), and Cape May (about 2.5 hours), with ferry options across Delaware Bay. Heading inland, a 2-hour drive west puts you in the Delaware Water Gap and Poconos for lakes and hiking. Adventurous renters point the rig north about 5 hours to Lake George or 8 to 9 hours to Acadia National Park in Maine. For a quick getaway, Cheesequake State Park is minutes from downtown Keyport. Pro tip: leave early Saturday or late Sunday to dodge Shore traffic on Route 35 and the Parkway.
