Leisure Knoll camping overview
Leisure Knoll is a community in Manchester Township, Ocean County, sitting on the northern edge of the New Jersey Pine Barrens between Toms River and Jackson. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both the Jersey Shore and inland pine and oak forests, with several private RV parks and one county-run campground clustered nearby.
Most of the campgrounds in this area are family-run seasonal resorts geared to RVs, with full or partial hookups, pools, and playgrounds. Butterfly Camping Resort and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground sit just west in Jackson, close to Six Flags Great Adventure. Tip Tam Camping Resort and Pine Cone Campgrounds round out the private options in the surrounding townships.
For public land camping, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township is the closest county-run option. It offers wooded, pull-through sites with water and electric service inside a 2,388-acre park at the northern fringe of the Pine Barrens, making it a practical base for families who want a quieter, forested setting.
Things to do near Leisure Knoll
The biggest family draw in the area is Six Flags Great Adventure and its drive-through Safari in Jackson, roughly fifteen minutes from most campgrounds on this list. Butterfly Camping Resort and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground both market themselves as a base for Six Flags trips and sit within a short drive of the gate.
Jersey Shore beaches at Seaside Heights, Point Pleasant, and Belmar are about twenty to thirty minutes east, which makes day trips to the coast realistic without paying shore-town camping rates.
For lower-key days, Turkey Swamp Park has a 17-acre lake with rental boats for fishing and paddling, roughly eight miles of multi-use trails through pitch pine and oak woods, four playgrounds, and open playfields. Weekend activities run at the park from May through September.

The camping calendar in this part of New Jersey is short but predictable. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open from April 1 through November 15, and private resorts follow a similar seasonal pattern. Butterfly Camping Resort typically runs from early April through mid-October, while Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground stays open year-round with limited winter facilities.
Spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for tent and RV camping, with cool nights, lower humidity, and thinner crowds. Water service at Turkey Swamp Park typically comes on around April 15 rather than opening day, so very early April trips should plan for electric-only sites.
Summer is peak season, especially weekends when families combine camping with Six Flags and shore trips. Independence Day and mid-August weekends fill first at the private resorts near Jackson, and holiday weekends at Turkey Swamp Park book out well ahead. Winter camping options are limited, and most private parks close their pools, bathhouses, and offices for the off-season.

How to book campgrounds near Leisure Knoll
Private campgrounds in this area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most require a deposit at booking. Butterfly Camping Resort, Tip Tam Camping Resort, Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground, and Pine Cone Campgrounds each run their own reservation systems, and many sites are held by seasonal campers, so booking well ahead of summer weekends is important.
Turkey Swamp Park is reserved through the Monmouth County Park System, online at MonmouthCountyParks.com or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after noon. Reservations open on January 1 for that year. Of its 64 wooded sites, 52 are reservable and 12 are held for first-come, first-served arrivals. A two-night minimum applies on Friday and Saturday nights, with one-night stays allowed Sunday through Thursday, and full payment is due at booking.
What to expect on-site
Expect sandy soil, pitch pine, and oak cover across most campgrounds in this corner of Ocean and Monmouth counties. Sites at Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground are shaded and roughly 35 by 50 feet, with water, 30-amp electric, and sewer at most sites. Butterfly Camping Resort offers 30 and 50 amp service on large, level pull-through and back-in sites and can handle rigs from pop-ups up to about 55 feet.
Turkey Swamp Park's 64 sites are all pull-through with water and electric, but no sewer at the site; a self-serve dump station is on the property, and rigs up to about 40 feet fit. Bathhouses, laundry, and camp stores are standard at the private resorts, along with pools, playgrounds, and weekend activities.
