Campgrounds near Leonardo, New Jersey
Leonardo sits on Raritan Bay in Monmouth County, minutes from the Sandy Hook peninsula and roughly an hour south of New York City. The area gives RV travelers access to Atlantic beaches, Fort Hancock history, and the trail networks of the Navesink Highlands, while remaining within easy reach of the Garden State Parkway and Route 36.
Campground options in the immediate area lean toward tent and rustic sites rather than full-hookup resorts. Floyd Bennett Field and the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area offer tent camping with flush toilets and running water but no showers or electric outlets. Allaire State Park has 45 tent and trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, though the family campsites are currently closed for a bathroom and shower facility construction project, with group camping still operating.
For RVers who want hookups, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers 70 water-and-electric sites, a dump station, full restrooms with hot showers, laundry, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Pine Cone Campgrounds and Turkey Swamp Park, a wooded Monmouth County park with a 17-acre lake, trails, an archery range, and playgrounds, round out the closest options for family RV trips.
Things to do near Leonardo
Sandy Hook is the anchor attraction. The park offers history tours, living history programs, hiking, birding, kayaking, swimming, and biking, and is known for its beaches, the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark, and the country's oldest continuing working lighthouse. A seven-mile multi-use path starts at the park entrance and loops around Fort Hancock, making it easy to bike from the campground to the beaches.
Inland, Allaire State Park is known for its 19th-century iron-making village and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge steam train, and the Manasquan River provides freshwater fishing. At Turkey Swamp Park, visitors can fish for bass, catfish, and bluegills from shore, and boats are available for rental on the 17-acre lake.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, travelers reach Manhattan by ferry, light rail, or PATH train for a day in the city without moving the rig.

The camping season on the North Jersey coast is compressed. Camp Gateway at Sandy Hook is typically open from mid-May through mid-October, and most Gateway facilities operate spring through fall, with the campground closed during winter months and peak visitation in summer when the beaches are busiest.
State and county grounds run longer shoulders. Allaire State Park's group campsites are open April 1 through December 15, and Turkey Swamp Park's family campground is open April 1 to November 15, with 64 wooded family campsites, 52 reservable with a two-night minimum on weekends and 12 first-come, first-served. Liberty Harbor operates as a seasonal park catering to travelers using it as an NYC base.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Book Sandy Hook and Turkey Swamp several months ahead for July and August, and expect heavier Route 36 traffic on beach weekends. Spring and early fall bring milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and better trail conditions inland.

Jacek was amazing with communication and having the advantages being able to have the RV delivered and set up was amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. The camper was super clean, and comfortable. We had a great time.

How to book campgrounds near Leonardo
Reservation systems vary by operator. Camp Gateway at Sandy Hook can be booked up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov, no walk-ups are allowed, and credit and debit cards are accepted. This campground is tent-only and cannot host RVs.
For New Jersey state parks, including Allaire, online reservations are made through the state's outdoors portal and can be booked up to 11 months in advance. Note that Allaire's family sites are temporarily closed for facility construction, so only group camping is currently reservable.
Turkey Swamp Park reservations are available online through Monmouth County Parks or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after 12 p.m. daily. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly through its website or by phone, and Pine Cone Campgrounds books direct with the operator.
What to expect on-site
Facilities range from primitive to full-service. At Sandy Hook, plan for a rustic stay: 20 tent sites spread across several loops within Gateway National Recreation Area, and campers must haul gear roughly a quarter mile from the parking area because vehicles cannot access the campsites. All sites include fire rings, charcoal grills, picnic tables, and food storage containers, and flush toilets and running water are available, but there are no showers or electric outlets.
Turkey Swamp is more RV-friendly, with wooded pull-through sites offering water and electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry, and a self-serve sanitary dump station. Allaire's trailer sanitary station is open April 15 through October 31.
Liberty Harbor is essentially a marina parking lot with water and electric connections, a dump station, and clean restrooms and showers. Expect tight maneuvering for larger rigs and urban noise, offset by direct transit access to Manhattan.
