Campgrounds near Matawan
Matawan sits in Monmouth County in central New Jersey, close to Raritan Bay and roughly an hour from both Manhattan and the Jersey Shore. RV travelers use it as a base for beach days at Sandy Hook and Point Pleasant, day trips to Philadelphia, and shorter runs into the Pine Barrens.
Most campgrounds serving the area lie south and west of town, in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Turkey Swamp Park, a Monmouth County facility in Freehold, runs from April 1 through November 15 and offers 64 pull-through sites with water and electric hookups, 52 reservable and 12 first-come, first-served. Allaire State Park has 45 tent or RV sites with no hookups, plus 10 shelters, though the family campground has periodically closed for bathhouse construction, so campers should confirm current status before booking.
Private parks including Pine Cone Campgrounds, Tip Tam Camping Resort, and Butterfly Camping Resort round out the options, generally offering full hookups and family-oriented amenities. Together these give RV renters a mix of state, county, and private options within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive of Matawan.
Things to do near Matawan
Cheesequake State Park is the closest hiking option, with short trails through salt marsh, pine, and hardwood forest. Sandy Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, offers ocean beaches, a historic lighthouse, and bike paths. Point Pleasant Beach and Asbury Park are within easy driving range for boardwalk days.
Turkey Swamp Park draws families for lakeside activities on its 17-acre lake, along with fishing for bass, catfish, and bluegills. Allaire State Park adds the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train and the restored 19th-century Allaire Village, plus kayaking on the Manasquan River and roughly 20 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. Freehold and Red Bank supply restaurants, breweries, and shopping on rest days.

The camping season in this part of New Jersey runs roughly from spring through late fall. Turkey Swamp Park is open April 1 through November 15, and Allaire State Park campsites and shelters operate April 1 through December 15. Private parks near the shore typically follow a similar April-to-October window.
Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill early, especially at parks with lake or pool access, and shore-adjacent sites see the heaviest demand. Sites, and especially shelters at Allaire, book up fast for summer and holiday weekends, so reserving at least three months in advance is advised.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and easier reservations. Fall foliage in the Pine Barrens typically peaks in mid to late October. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close, and the Allaire trailer sanitary station runs only from mid-April through mid-October, so dump service is unavailable in the shoulder months even where sites are open.

How to book near Matawan
Reservation systems differ by operator. Allaire State Park uses camping.nj.gov, with online reservations available up to 11 months in advance, or by calling the park office. Turkey Swamp Park is booked through the Monmouth County Park System online or by calling the campground office, with reservations for the upcoming season accepted starting January 1.
Private parks such as Pine Cone Campgrounds, Tip Tam Camping Resort, and Butterfly Camping Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, often with weekly and seasonal rate options.
For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as the reservation window opens. Confirm the RV length limit, hookup type, and whether the site is pull-through or back-in before booking. If dates are full, check for cancellations closer to the trip, since state and county systems release forfeited sites back into inventory.
What to expect near Matawan
Sites in this region tend to be wooded, level, and moderately spaced. All Turkey Swamp Park campsites are pull-through with water and electric hookups, set among pitch pine and oak on the northern edge of the Pine Barrens. Allaire offers picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and a seasonal RV dump station, but no hookups at individual sites.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Monmouth and Ocean counties. Ticks are active from spring through fall, so campers should plan on repellent and daily checks. Standard food storage practices apply for raccoons and other small wildlife.
Quiet hours, leash rules, and gate codes are enforced at most parks. Arrive during posted office hours to avoid locked-gate issues after dark.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Matawan, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Matawan, NJ typically cost?
RV rental in Matawan is more affordable than most travelers expect. On RVezy you'll generally find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A motorhomes from $275 to $450 per night. Prices peak between Memorial Day and Labor Day when Jersey Shore demand is strongest, so booking midweek in late May, early June, or September can save 20 to 30 percent. For a cheap RV rental Matawan travelers love, filter for travel trailers and look for hosts offering local delivery, which removes the need for a tow vehicle. Pro tip: book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for summer weekends to lock in the best rigs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matawan%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Matawan, New Jersey?
Great news for first time renters: a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Matawan. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RV use, even for larger Class A motorhomes. On RVezy, you simply need to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver's license, and you'll verify your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP). That's truly it. Most guests are surprised at how quickly the verification clears, often the same day you book.
nj.gov/mvc/license/basic.htmIs my Matawan RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Matawan automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan helps cover most physical damage to the RV, and you choose your preferred coverage level during checkout (not the host) so you can match it to your comfort and budget. Combined with round-the-clock roadside help for flat tires, lockouts, or jump starts, you can head down the Garden State Parkway toward Cape May or Sandy Hook knowing support is one tap away. First-time renters especially appreciate how this removes the guesswork from an RV rental in Matawan.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Matawan RV rental?
Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a great rig with confidence. Beyond that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is. Cancellation details are explained transparently during checkout and in your RVezy account, and customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book early for July 4th week on the Jersey Shore, you can always adjust your plans later if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Matawan?
Yes, pups are welcome on plenty of Matawan rigs. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats), and message the host directly with your pet's size and breed if you have questions. Once you're rolling, Monmouth County is a dog lover's playground: Cheesequake State Park in nearby Old Bridge has leashed-pet trails just 10 minutes from Matawan, and Sandy Hook's Gateway National Recreation Area allows leashed dogs on certain beaches outside peak summer hours. A pet-friendly RV rental Matawan families book often comes with easy-clean vinyl floors. Pro tip: bring a portable water bowl, summer humidity here is no joke.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Matawan instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery is widely available in Matawan. Many local hosts will drop the RV at your home, a nearby campground like Cheesequake State Park, or a Jersey Shore site such as Turkey Swamp Park, and they'll handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough on arrival. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this option and their per-mile fees. Delivery is ideal if you've never towed a trailer or feel uneasy navigating Route 9 or the Garden State Parkway in a big rig. Pro tip: ask about a package that includes setup plus pickup, you'll basically have a turnkey cabin waiting at your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matawan%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on a Matawan RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You've got serious range from Matawan. Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with optional unlimited mileage upgrades available at booking, which is perfect for longer road trips. To put that in perspective: Cape May is about 130 miles south, the Poconos sit roughly 90 miles west, the Catskills are around 130 miles north, and Acadia-bound travelers head 450+ miles northeast. If you're eyeing a multi-state RV road trip from Matawan, message the host before booking to discuss an unlimited mileage add-on. Pro tip: an RV rental with unlimited mileage often pays for itself once you cross the 300-mile mark.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matawan%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Matawan for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice near Matawan. The closest gem is Cheesequake State Park (about 10 minutes away in Old Bridge) with RV-friendly sites tucked into forested hills, electric hookups, and a sandy swim lake. Allaire State Park in Wall Township (about 25 minutes south) offers wooded family-friendly sites near a historic 19th-century village. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold (about 30 minutes) is a Monmouth County favorite with hookups, fishing, and pedal-boat rentals. For more Jersey Shore RV camping options, hosts can also deliver to private parks farther south. Pro tip: New Jersey state park sites open for reservation months ahead and summer weekends can sell out within minutes of release.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Matawan?
Honestly, Matawan offers three excellent RV seasons. Late May through mid-June brings warm 70 to 80 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and far thinner crowds than peak summer. July and August are classic Jersey Shore season with highs in the mid-80s, perfect for beach days at Sandy Hook (28 miles north) or Asbury Park (20 miles south), though campgrounds book solid. September and October are the sleeper hit: 60 to 75 degree days, brilliant fall foliage in the Pine Barrens, and dramatically lower campsite competition. Winters (December to February) drop into the 20s and 30s, so most hosts pause winter rentals. Pro tip: target the second week of September, post-Labor Day quiet plus warm Atlantic water for swimming.
weather.gov/phi/climateI've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and you won't be alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, generator, slide-outs, and waste systems before you leave the driveway. First time renting an RV in Matawan? Choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer (20 to 25 feet) for an easier learning curve. Avoid driving through downtown Manhattan or the Holland Tunnel (RVs are prohibited or restricted), and instead take the Garden State Parkway south or I-195 west, both RV-friendly with wide lanes. Pro tip: book delivery for your first trip so the host handles setup at the campground, you just enjoy.
state.nj.us/turnpike/What if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, help is built into every booking. RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with every Matawan RV rental, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery throughout the US and most of Canada. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for questions about quirks like awning operation or the water pump switch, owners typically respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip too. Pro tip: snap a quick video during your pickup walkthrough so you can rewatch propane and dump procedures later. Most issues turn out to be small things that get sorted within an hour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Matawan RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Matawan. You're free to drive your rental throughout the continental US, with popular routes heading south to Cape May (about 130 miles), west to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 90 miles), or north to the White Mountains in New Hampshire (about 350 miles). Canadian travel may be permitted depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed under RVezy's protection coverage. Pro tip: a 10-day loop from Matawan through Acadia National Park and back is the New England trip of a lifetime, roughly 1,000 miles total.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Matawan RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable with a little planning. New Jersey gas averages around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon (and yes, attendants pump it for you, it's the only state that requires full service). Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 15 to 20 mpg for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal mpg minus 30 to 40 percent for travel trailers. A 200-mile round trip to Cape May in a Class C runs about $60 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River, gas there is often 30 to 50 cents cheaper per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Matawan?
Sooner is better, especially for summer. New Jersey state parks like Cheesequake, Allaire, and Bass River release reservations through the state's reservation system several months ahead, and summer weekend sites for Jersey Shore campgrounds can vanish within minutes of release. For private parks like Turkey Swamp or other Monmouth County options, aim for 2 to 3 months in advance for July and August. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is far more flexible, often bookable a week out. Pro tip: create your reservation account, save your favorite sites, and set a calendar reminder for the booking window opening, you'll triple your odds of scoring a prime waterfront spot.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Matawan?
Matawan sits right on the Garden State Parkway (Exit 117) and Route 9, both of which are RV-friendly with generous shoulders and clear signage. Avoid driving an RV on the Palisades Interstate Parkway (commercial vehicles prohibited) and skip the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels into Manhattan (RVs with propane are restricted or banned). Summer weekend Parkway traffic heading south to the Shore can crawl Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so plan early morning departures. Watch for low-clearance bridges on older roads in Red Bank and Keyport (some under 11 feet). Coastal winds can buffet tall rigs near Sandy Hook. Pro tip: leave Matawan by 8 a.m. on Fridays in July and you'll glide right past the worst beach-bound bottlenecks.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Matawan?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Matawan are well-equipped for a smooth RV camping Matawan experience. Cheesequake State Park offers electric hookups, potable water fill stations, a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. Turkey Swamp Park provides full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi at many sites. Allaire has electric-only sites with a central dump station and water spigots. For dumping or filling up between trips, the Cheesequake and Allaire dump stations are open seasonally, and Flying J in Bordentown (35 miles south) offers year-round dump and fresh water. Pro tip: arrive with a half-full fresh tank to keep weight down on the drive, then top off at the campground spigot.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/allaire.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Matawan motorhome rental?
You'll be amazed how dialed-in modern rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Matawan listing on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, coffee maker), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof and dash air conditioning, a propane furnace, a flat-screen TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class Cs sleep 5 to 7, while travel trailers and Class As often sleep 6 to 10. Many hosts also offer Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators, outdoor speakers, and even bikes as add-ons. Pro tip: review the listing photos and amenities checklist closely so you know exactly what's included before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matawan%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Matawan RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip easier with optional extras. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Matawan, NJ include linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, outdoor grills, camping chairs, propane refills, and dump/cleaning services so you can return the rig as-is ($75 to $150). Delivery and setup at Cheesequake, Allaire, or your driveway is the most popular add-on, with fees usually based on round-trip mileage. Pickup and dropoff windows are typically 1 to 3 p.m. and 10 to 11 a.m., though many hosts flex for early ferry travelers or late returners. Pro tip: bundling linens plus dump service makes the trip feel like a hotel checkout.
visitnj.org/things-to-do/outdoors-recreationHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You'll pay for your Matawan booking directly through RVezy at checkout using a major credit or debit card, never in cash to the host, which keeps everything protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough pre-trip walkthrough video with the host, document existing scratches or dings, and return the RV with the tanks and fuel level the host requested. Pro tip: use a credit card with a high limit so the deposit hold doesn't crowd your trip-spending budget.
