Camping near Maywood, New Jersey
Maywood sits in Bergen County in northeast New Jersey, roughly ten miles west of the George Washington Bridge. The borough itself is residential, so RV renters use it as a launch point for camping in the surrounding Highlands, Hudson Valley state parks, and the New York City waterfront. Nearby options range from a full-hookup urban RV park to primitive tent-focused sites in state forest land.
The closest developed RV site is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, positioned across the Hudson from Lower Manhattan. West of Maywood, Camp Wyanokie is a rustic nature-focused campground in West Milford, New Jersey, surrounded by the Highlands region, and Wawayanda State Park sits farther north near the New York state line.
North of the city, Beaver Pond Campground is situated within Harriman State Park in Rockland County, adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area. To the east in Brooklyn, Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area offers rustic camping on Jamaica Bay when the seasonal operation is running.
Things to do near Maywood
Trip planning from Maywood usually splits between city sightseeing and Highlands hiking. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, renters take the PATH train or ferry into Manhattan for museums, Statue of Liberty ferries, and Ellis Island. The Grove Street PATH station is a short walk from the park.
For outdoor days, Harriman State Park offers the biggest trail network within an hour's drive, with hiking, swimming beaches, fishing, and paddling on its lakes. Beaver Pond Campground puts campers within walking distance of the Lake Welch swimming beach and adjoining trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail.
Wawayanda State Park offers lake swimming, boat rentals, and roughly sixty miles of marked trails, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail that runs across the Wawayanda Plateau. Floyd Bennett Field adds bike paths, an archery range, and access to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and its migratory bird habitat.

The camping window in this region is tightly seasonal. New Jersey and New York state park campgrounds generally open in spring and close in mid-to-late October. Wawayanda State Park is open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond's regular reservable season runs early May through mid-October, with a short walk-in-only window before that. Floyd Bennett Field's campground typically operates from mid-May through mid-October when it is running, and campers should confirm the current season on recreation.gov before planning a trip.
Summer is peak season and books out early. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings foliage in the Highlands through October, with cooler nights and thinner crowds after Labor Day.
Winter narrows the options considerably. Public-land campgrounds close, and Liberty Harbor RV Park is the practical year-round choice for RV renters visiting the New York metro.

How to book campgrounds near Maywood
Reservation systems vary by park. New York state parks including Beaver Pond use ReserveAmerica, with camping reservations available up to nine months in advance. New Jersey state parks including Wawayanda book through camping.nj.gov, with sites available up to eleven months out.
Floyd Bennett Field, when operating, uses the federal system at recreation.gov, and advance reservations are recommended because same-day availability is limited. There is a 14-night maximum stay. Camp Wyanokie handles bookings directly through its own site.
Liberty Harbor RV Park takes phone reservations; call ahead for peak summer weekends and holidays, when sites near NYC fill quickly.
What to expect at nearby campgrounds
Amenities vary widely across these sites. Liberty Harbor is an urban lot with utilities, providing 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, pull-through sites for big rigs, a dump station, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Sites are close together with minimal privacy.
Harriman and Wawayanda are primitive by comparison. Beaver Pond Campground has no electrical hookups, though select sites can accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet long, and shared full-service bathrooms and a dump station are available. Pets and alcohol are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Camp Wyanokie is a rustic backcountry site with outhouses and no electric, water, or sewer hookups, best suited to tent campers rather than RVs. Plan hookup needs accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Maywood, NJ

On RVezy, you can typically find travel trailers starting around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes in the $200 to $325 range, and larger Class A motorhomes from about $300 and up. Because Maywood sits in Bergen County just minutes from Manhattan, demand spikes during summer weekends and fall foliage season, so booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead helps lock in the best rates. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Maywood,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Maywood, NJ?
Good news: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Maywood, NJ. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RV use, even for larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy, you'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID verification is handled securely through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly in and you're ready to roll out of Bergen County for your New Jersey RV trip.
nj.gov/mvc/license/firstlic.htmWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Maywood, NJ?
Every RV rental in Maywood booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout (not the host). This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection whether you're navigating Route 17 or parked at Liberty State Park. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully when booking your Maywood RV rental so you start your trip confidently covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Maywood RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Maywood is low-risk because RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy for every trip, not the individual host. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, and additional flexibility may apply depending on how far in advance you cancel. Northeast weather can shift quickly, especially during late-summer storm season, so it's reassuring to know there is a clear process behind every booking. Pro tip: message your host early if your plans change, and reach out to RVezy support through the Help Center for cancellation specifics tied to your trip.

Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Maywood is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you will see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Bergen County is a great pet-travel basecamp: Saddle River County Park has miles of paved trails minutes from Maywood, and Campgaw Mountain Reservation in nearby Mahwah allows leashed dogs on its hiking paths. For longer trips, Worthington State Forest along the Delaware Water Gap is one of New Jersey's most dog-friendly camping areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees so your pup is set for the road.
co.bergen.nj.us/parks-recreationCan the RV be delivered to me in Maywood instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Maywood is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's ideal if you're a first-time renter who would rather skip driving a big rig through Bergen County traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your driveway, a nearby campground, or even a tailgate spot at MetLife Stadium just south of town. They'll level it, connect hookups when available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter when browsing motorhome rental Maywood listings, then message the host with your destination to get an exact delivery quote, since fees usually scale by distance.

weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Is it really that easy in Maywood?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Maywood is genuinely beginner-friendly thanks to how RVezy hosts handle pickup. Every host gives you a full orientation walkthrough, covering leveling, slide-outs, the water system, generator, and propane. They'll answer questions in person and you can call or message them anytime during your trip. If Bergen County's busy roads (looking at you, Route 4 and Route 17) make you nervous, start with a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer and book delivery so you can ease into RV life. Pro tip: plan a short first night close to home, like Campgaw Mountain, before tackling longer drives.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002342453-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking from Maywood includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway, a dead battery in the Catskills, or a lockout at a Cape May campground. Your host is also your direct line for quick questions about the rig itself, often the fastest way to troubleshoot small things like the water pump or awning. RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the Maywood pickup spot.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I drive my Maywood RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, cross-state travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Maywood, and a road trip through New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, or even Maine is completely doable. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the host and the protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Important: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Popular routes include the drive to Niagara Falls, the run up to the White Mountains, and the cruise to Acadia. Pro tip: bring your passport if you're heading north of the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my RV trip from Maywood?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items on any RV trip, but it's easy to budget for when you rent an RV in Maywood. Expect 8-10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10-14 MPG for Class C, and 18-22 MPG for Class B campervans and small travel trailers. Average gas prices in northern New Jersey hover around $3.20-$3.60 per gallon, often slightly cheaper than neighboring New York. A weekend trip to the Poconos (about 200 miles round-trip) might cost $60-$90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey before crossing into New York or Pennsylvania, where prices and taxes tend to be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Maywood RV trip?
For the best campgrounds near Maywood, plan to book 2 to 6 months ahead, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage trips. New Jersey state park campgrounds such as Worthington, Stokes, and Cheesequake use the state's online reservation system and open bookings on a rolling basis. New York state parks like Harriman use ReserveAmerica. KOAs and private parks like Liberty Harbor RV Park book through their own websites. Pro tip: Memorial Day, July 4th, and Columbus Day weekends sell out first, so set a calendar reminder for when reservations open and grab your spot the morning of release.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like for RVs around Maywood?
Maywood sits in dense Bergen County, so driving an RV here takes a little planning but it's very manageable. Major routes like Route 4, Route 17, and I-80 are wide and RV-friendly. The George Washington Bridge has posted clearances on both decks, and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels prohibit propane-carrying RVs, so route around them via the GWB. Rush hour (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM) is heavy, especially on Route 17. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS like Garmin RV or the CoPilot RV app to auto-avoid low bridges, including the Merritt Parkway in nearby Connecticut, which bans commercial vehicles and many RVs.
panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/en/index.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Maywood, NJ?
Campgrounds near Maywood range from full-service resorts to rustic state parks, so it's easy to match your comfort level. Private parks like Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City and Cherry Ridge Campground in Newfoundland offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. New Jersey state parks like Worthington and Stokes provide picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and dump stations, but most don't offer site-by-site hookups. Most parks have on-site dump stations and potable water fill-ups. Pro tip: if your RV doesn't have heated tanks and you're traveling in shoulder season, book a private park with full hookups so you don't have to worry about freezing lines.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What's typically included inside an RV rental in Maywood?
RV rentals in Maywood come fully equipped to live and travel comfortably right off the lot. Expect a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; sleeping for 2 to 10 depending on the rig; air conditioning and a furnace; a TV (often with DVD or streaming); and seatbelts at every designated travel seat. Many listings include onboard generators, solar setups, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Class B campervans pack everything into a compact rig that fits in a standard parking spot, while Class A and Class C motorhomes offer roomy slide-outs. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host if you need specifics like a coffee maker or extra bedding for your Maywood RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Maywood,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Maywood?
Hosts on RVezy in Maywood offer a variety of add-ons to customize your trip without overpacking. Common options include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even pre-stocked firewood. Some hosts include unlimited mileage with their listing, while others charge a per-mile fee beyond a daily allowance. Pickup logistics are flexible, with many hosts offering delivery to local campgrounds, MetLife Stadium for tailgates, or Newark Liberty International Airport for fly-and-drive trips. Pro tip: review the add-ons section on every listing and bundle what you need at booking to skip extra charges later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Maywood,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Maywood RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book your RV rental in Maywood, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released back to your card after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned clean, on time, and damage-free. Hosts cannot charge random extras outside the platform, which protects both sides. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff (the host will do a walkthrough with you), so there's a clear record and your deposit comes back quickly.
