Camping near North Haledon, New Jersey
North Haledon sits in Passaic County in the New Jersey Highlands, within easy driving distance of both the Manhattan skyline and the forested ridges of northern New Jersey and Rockland County, New York. That geography shapes the camping options: a short drive west leads to state forests and lake-side campgrounds, while a short drive east lands RVs at urban parks with ferry access to New York City.
The closest tent-only option is Camp Wyanokie, a preserve adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest in West Milford. It centers on a small lake with rustic campsites, hiking trails, and no RV accommodations. For RVs, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the nearest full-hookup option and one of the closest RV parks to Manhattan.
Further out, Wawayanda State Park offers forested terrain around Lake Wawayanda with more than sixty miles of marked trails, and Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park is located adjacent to Lake Welch across the New York line. Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, adds a full-service private RV option to the north.
Things to do near North Haledon
Hiking dominates the area. A twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through Wawayanda State Park, and more than sixty miles of trails are marked in the park. Harriman State Park, reached via Beaver Pond Campground, has hundreds of miles of trails maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, plus swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati.
Water activities are easy to build into a trip. Landlocked salmon were introduced to Wawayanda Lake, one of only a handful of deep New Jersey lakes with year-round habitat for cold-water fish such as trout and salmon, and ice fishing is permitted within designated areas in winter.
Families staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park can walk to the PATH station or take the ferry to Manhattan, then return to camp for the night. Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty ferries leave from adjacent Liberty State Park.

The core state-park camping season in New Jersey runs from spring through late fall. Wawayanda State Park is open April 1 to October 31, so trips planned outside those dates need to look elsewhere. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park operates on a similar spring-to-fall calendar, generally opening in early April and closing at the end of October.
Summer weekends are the busiest period. Beaver Pond is best mid-week, since weekends bring large NYC family groups along with generators and radios, and midweek stays are noticeably quieter. Fall brings peak foliage across the Highlands in October, with cooler nights and lighter demand at private campgrounds.
Winter narrows the options significantly. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, making it the practical off-season base in the region. State-park campgrounds nearby are closed from November through March, and Camp Wyanokie remains a rustic, primitive option outside the main season.

How to book campgrounds near North Haledon
New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda State Park, are reserved online through camping.nj.gov, the state's official reservation portal run by the Division of Parks and Forestry. Group sites at Wawayanda require a minimum of seven persons and may require calling the park office directly.
Beaver Pond Campground uses the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival. Select sites accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers.
Camp Wyanokie handles site availability through its host organization. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Black Bear Campground take reservations directly through their websites. Summer weekends fill early at every option, so book several weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Amenities vary widely across the region. Liberty Harbor RV Park offers 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dump station in an urban marina setting. Black Bear Campground provides full hookups, pull-through sites for larger rigs, laundry, and a camp store.
State-park campgrounds are more basic. Beaver Pond sites have picnic tables and fire rings with flip-top grills, shared full-service bathrooms, no electrical hookups for trailers, no alcohol, and no pets. There may be bear activity in this area. Wawayanda group sites have picnic tables, fire rings and a composting restroom, water must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Camp Wyanokie is rustic, with latrines, fire pits, and no running water, electricity, or RV accommodations.

weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it?
You've got this. First time renting an RV feels intimidating until you realize every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, propane, slide-outs, and waste tanks. Many North Haledon hosts will text or call during your trip if you have a question. If you'd rather skip city driving altogether, choose delivery and the RV arrives ready to use. For your first trip, start small: a Class B campervan or a 22-25 foot Class C is easy to handle on local roads like Route 208 or I-287. You'll feel like a pro by day two.
rvezy.com/blog/rv-rental-tips-first-time-rentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in North Haledon booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-80 heading to the Delaware Water Gap or parked at a campground in the Poconos. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup and you'll feel confident out on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Haledon RV rental into Canada or other states?
Crossing state lines is no problem, and most North Haledon hosts welcome multi-state trips through New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, and down the East Coast to the Outer Banks. Travel into Canada may be allowed but requires advance approval from the host because insurance and protection coverage need to be confirmed for cross-border travel, so message them before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular routes from North Haledon include the Acadia National Park loop (about 450 miles north), the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Finger Lakes wine trail in upstate NY.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a North Haledon RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable with planning. New Jersey gas prices typically run a touch above the national average, and New Jersey is a full-service state so attendants pump for you. Expect roughly 7-10 MPG for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, 18-22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle's MPG minus 3-5 for travel trailers. For a 300-mile weekend loop to the Delaware Water Gap, budget around $90-$160 in fuel for a midsize Class C. Pro tip: fill up just over the Pennsylvania border on longer trips, where prices are usually lower.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near North Haledon?
Book sooner rather than later, especially for summer weekends. New Jersey state park campgrounds like Worthington State Forest and Stokes State Forest take reservations through the state parks system, and prime summer weekends fill within days of release (typically several months in advance). Private parks like Camp Taylor and Panther Lake fill 2-3 months out for July and August. For September shoulder season, 3-4 weeks of lead time is usually fine. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) almost always have availability, even in peak summer, and rates can be 20-30% cheaper.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/index.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around North Haledon?
Driving an RV around North Haledon is very doable as long as you plan your route. The town sits in northern Passaic County with easy access to Route 208, I-287, and the Garden State Parkway, but avoid the Lincoln and Holland tunnels (RVs with propane are restricted) and watch for low clearances on parkways like the Palisades. Traffic into Manhattan peaks 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM weekdays, so plan departures early or midday. North Haledon itself has gentle hills and quiet residential streets. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or CoPilot to auto-avoid restricted parkways throughout the NYC metro area.
state.nj.us/transportation/Where can I dump tanks and fill water near North Haledon?

Most full-service campgrounds within 60 miles of North Haledon (Camp Taylor in Columbia, Panther Lake in Andover, Indian Rock in Jackson) include dump stations and freshwater fill for guests, and many offer it to non-guests for a small fee ($10-$20). Several Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I-80 westbound and select NJ Turnpike service areas offer dump access. New Jersey state parks like Worthington and Stokes have public dump stations during the open season. Pro tip: top off freshwater at your campground before checkout and you'll skip stops on travel day.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Haledon%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book (never directly to the host) and receive an itemized breakdown of rental cost, protection plan, taxes, fees, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Deposit amounts vary by listing but typically run $500-$1,500 depending on the RV's value. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, and your North Haledon trip will end as smoothly as it started.
