Camping near Oakland, New Jersey
Oakland sits in Bergen County in the New York-New Jersey Highlands, a borough roughly 25 miles northwest of Manhattan. The surrounding terrain of forested ridges, reservoirs, and state parkland puts RV renters within an hour of a wide range of campgrounds, from rustic tent-only preserves to full-hookup RV parks with metropolitan access.
The closest options run rustic. Camp Wyanokie sits near Norvin Green State Forest, and nearby group and rustic sites include picnic tables, fire rings, and composting restrooms, with water carried from a central point. Wawayanda State Park, farther north in the Highlands, operates seasonal drive-in, walk-in, and group sites through the New Jersey State Park Service.
For RVers who need hookups, Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet on select sites, Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York provides full hookups year-round, and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers the closest full-service RV option to New York City.
Things to do near Oakland
The Highlands region delivers hiking, paddling, and swimming within a short drive. Wawayanda State Park has around sixty miles of trails, including a twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail, plus swimming, boating, and fishing on Wawayanda Lake. Norvin Green State Forest, next to Camp Wyanokie, offers rugged trails and scenic overlooks across the Wyanokie plateau.
Harriman State Park is a 48,556-acre park in New York, features 31 lakes, and has over 200 miles of trails maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati provide swimming beaches near Beaver Pond Campground.
For a metropolitan day, RV renters based at Liberty Harbor RV Park can reach the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan by ferry or PATH train.

Northern New Jersey has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm, humid, and wet, winters are very cold and snowy, and temperatures typically vary from 21°F to 84°F over the year. Most New Jersey and New York state park campgrounds operate on a seasonal calendar, so timing matters.
Wawayanda State Park's campsites are open April 1 to October 31, with peak demand concentrated in summer weekends when families from the New York metro area book well ahead. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park runs a similar warm-season schedule, and the campground tends to be quieter during weekdays and gets busier on weekends with families. Spring and fall bring mild weather, wildflowers, and foliage, with fewer crowds and easier reservations.
Winter narrows the options. Camp Wyanokie, Wawayanda, and Beaver Pond effectively close or scale back, while Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park stay open year-round, making them the practical choices for cold-weather RV travel in the area.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Oakland
New Jersey state park campsites, including Wawayanda State Park, are reserved online through the New Jersey State Park Service's reservation system. New York state parks, including Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, are booked through ReserveAmerica or the Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, with reservations accepted up to 9 months in advance and same-day reservations allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Private parks handle their own systems. Camp Wyanokie books rustic sites directly through its operator, and Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park take reservations by phone or through their own websites.
For summer weekends at any of these, especially holiday weekends, plan several weeks to several months ahead.
What to expect on site
Expect a wide range of amenity levels. Camp Wyanokie is strictly rustic, with tent-only sites, latrines, and fire pits, with no running water or electricity, and no RVs. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office, and there are no shower facilities.
Beaver Pond has picnic tables, fire rings with flip-top grills, shared full-service bathrooms, showers, laundry, and a dumping station, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers, and pets are not permitted. Black Bear Campground offers full-hookup RV sites with pet-friendly amenities in Florida, New York.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a paved lot at a Jersey City marina with power, water, dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry. Sites are close together with minimal privacy, and maneuvering large rigs through Jersey City streets takes care.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oakland, New Jersey?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oakland for nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on the platform. New Jersey does not require a special class license, Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or RV endorsement for personal-use RVs under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer you will see listed. To book on RVezy, you must be at least 25 years old and complete ID verification through the platform. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your valid home-country license and an International Driving Permit (IDP) for your Oakland RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Oakland?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Oakland, NJ includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are not left stranded if you get a flat tire on Route 287 or need a tow off the Garden State Parkway. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you financial peace of mind without arranging separate insurance. During checkout, you choose your protection level: a higher tier means a lower deductible and more coverage. Hosts do not set this for you, so you can match it to your comfort level and hit the road with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Oakland RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV in Oakland is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and every booking includes a grace period right after you book, so if plans shift quickly you have a window to cancel for a full refund. After that, what you can recover depends on how far out your trip start date is when you cancel. You will see the full policy details during checkout and in your trip dashboard. Book early to lock in the best Oakland RV rental options, then finalize details knowing the cancellation framework is on your side.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Oakland?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Oakland travelers specifically search for, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible listings. Once you find one, message the host to confirm any pet fee and breed details. Oakland sits right beside the dog-friendly trails of Ramapo Valley County Reservation, where leashed pets are welcome around Scarlet Oak Pond and the Ramapo River. Campgaw Mountain Reservation in nearby Mahwah also welcomes leashed dogs on its trails. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible bowl, and a towel since the Ramapo River crossings are tempting for water-loving dogs.
bergencountynj.gov/bergen-county-department-of-parks/ramapo-valley-county-reservation/Can the RV be delivered to me in Oakland instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Oakland is widely available and is the easiest way to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in northern New Jersey will deliver the RV right to your driveway, a local campground like Camp Taylor in Columbia, or a Bergen County reservation site. They will level it, hook up utilities if applicable, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV or if you would rather skip towing through Route 208 traffic. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see Oakland-area hosts who offer it, then message them for an exact delivery quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel from Oakland, NJ on an RV road trip?
Oakland is one of the best launching pads in the Northeast for an RV road trip because you are within easy reach of mountains, beaches, and major cities. The Jersey Shore (Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island) is about 95 to 110 miles south. The Poconos and Delaware Water Gap sit roughly 60 to 75 miles west. Cape May at the southern tip of New Jersey is about 165 miles. The Catskills in New York are around 90 miles north, and many travelers use Oakland as a first overnight stop on a longer New England loop heading toward Acadia. Mileage policies vary by host, so filter for unlimited mileage if you are planning a big loop.
visitnj.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Oakland, NJ for RV camping?
You have excellent options for RV camping near Oakland. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 30 miles west) is the closest public campground with RV sites, set inside a 3,000+ acre park. Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia, NJ (about an hour west) offers wooded sites with full hookups and is a family favorite. Spruce Run Recreation Area near Clinton has campsites along a large reservoir. For a Pocono getaway, Otter Lake Camp Resort in Marshalls Creek, PA (about 75 miles) has full hookups and a heated pool. Book Mahlon Dickerson the moment reservations open since it fills first for summer weekends.
morrisparks.org/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservation/When is the best time of year for an Oakland, NJ RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for an Oakland NJ RV trip. May through October offers daytime highs from around 65 degrees Fahrenheit in May to the mid-80s in July and August, then back into the 60s and 70s by October. Many travelers consider late September and mid-October the best stretch because Bergen County's fall foliage along the Ramapo Mountains typically peaks in mid to late October, with crisp nights perfect for campfires. July and August can be humid and busy, so book early. Winter rentals are possible if your host's RV is winterized, but most public campgrounds in northern New Jersey close from late fall through March.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting one in Oakland really doable?
Yes, and you are in good company. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario in the Oakland area, and RVezy is built for it. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, including how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump valves, plus practical driving tips for the specific rig. If you would rather skip driving entirely, a campervan rental in Oakland can be delivered and set up so the RV is fully parked and ready when you arrive. Stick to a Class B or smaller Class C motorhome for the easiest learning curve, and you will be cruising Route 287 toward the Catskills with confidence by day two.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Oakland booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with your protection plan, so a flat tire on the New Jersey Turnpike, a dead battery at a campground, or a lockout in the Poconos is one phone call away from help. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you have questions about the RV, the host, or your booking. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN sticker and the roadside assistance number at pickup so they are easy to find if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oakland RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, and Oakland's location makes multi-state travel easy. When you rent an RV in Oakland, you can drive into New York, Pennsylvania, all of New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and into Canada with most hosts' approval. Message the host from the listing page before booking to confirm cross-border travel and any insurance considerations. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Oakland include the Hudson Valley loop through New York and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Always carry your booking documents and a valid passport for any border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel costs and mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting for fuel in northern New Jersey is straightforward once you know your RV class. Class B campervans average roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 6 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in Bergen County usually sit close to the New Jersey statewide average, and a local perk is that New Jersey gas stations are full-service by law, so an attendant pumps for you. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Oakland to the Poconos and back, expect roughly $90 to $160 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up before crossing into New York where gas can be noticeably more per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakland?
Earlier is always better for the best campgrounds near Oakland NJ. New Jersey State Park campsites (including Spruce Run, Stokes State Forest, and Worthington) are reserved through the state's official reservation system, and popular weekends sell out months ahead, especially for Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall foliage weekends in October. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Morris County books through the Morris County Park Commission and fills fast for Friday and Saturday nights. For private parks in the Poconos, aim for 2 to 3 months ahead in peak season. Midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings even in July, and many parks offer reduced midweek rates.
njparksandforests.org/parks/campreserv.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around Oakland, NJ?
Driving an RV around Oakland is very manageable once you know the layout. You are tucked just off Route 287 and Route 208, giving easy highway access without dealing with Manhattan-style traffic. Avoid the Palisades Interstate Parkway, which prohibits commercial vehicles and trailers, and watch for low clearances on older parkway overpasses in northern New Jersey (some are under 10 feet). The Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike are RV-friendly, though tolls add up, so factor in roughly $30 to $60 for a typical weekend round-trip. Rush hours on Route 287 (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays) can be slow, so depart Friday late morning to avoid the worst of it.
nj.gov/transportation/What amenities do campgrounds near Oakland usually have?
You will find a great mix of options for where to park an RV in Oakland and the surrounding region. Full-hookup sites (water, electric 30 or 50 amp, sewer) are standard at private parks like Camp Taylor and Otter Lake, while New Jersey State Park campgrounds typically offer water and electric with shared dump stations rather than sewer at every site. Spruce Run, Stephens State Park, and Mahlon Dickerson all have dump stations and potable water fills. Most parks include flush restrooms, hot showers, and picnic tables. Top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground because finding water fills along Route 80 and Route 287 can be tricky on travel days.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/What features and amenities come with RV rentals in Oakland?
Modern RVs in the Oakland area are well-equipped. A typical motorhome rental in Oakland includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with a refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, air conditioning, a heating furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a generator, outdoor awning, USB outlets, and a flat-screen TV. WiFi varies: some hosts provide a mobile hotspot, and many campgrounds near Oakland have park-wide WiFi. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often included or available as inexpensive add-ons. Confirm what is included on the listing page so you only pack what you actually need.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons, pickup logistics, and mileage policies should I expect?
Hosts offering RV rental in New Jersey often provide useful add-ons: linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators, propane refills, portable grills, and even kayak racks for paddling the Ramapo River. Pickup and dropoff are typically at the host's home base in or near Oakland, but delivery to your campground is often available for a flat fee or per-mile rate. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with roughly $0.30 to $0.45 per extra mile. If you are planning a longer Jersey Shore loop or Catskills trip, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage to avoid surprises. Confirm pickup time so you do not lose half of your first day waiting.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in NJ on RVezy, your card is charged through the platform (never directly to the host), and the host gets paid after your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card around pickup. The amount depends on the RV's value and your chosen protection plan: a higher protection tier means a lower deductible, which reduces your effective deposit risk. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos, and return the RV in the same condition and on time. Your deposit is typically released within a few days after a smooth dropoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksI'm nervous about driving an RV in northern New Jersey traffic. Any local insider tips?
Totally fair concern, and there is an easy fix. Oakland is one of the friendliest launch points in the New York metro region because you are already west of the worst congestion. For a family RV trip Oakland-based travelers can reach Route 287 north toward the Catskills or Route 80 west to the Delaware Water Gap in under 10 minutes, skipping NYC traffic entirely. If you would rather not drive at all, choose a host with delivery and have them park the RV at Camp Taylor Campground or directly at your trailhead. Local insider tip: avoid the George Washington Bridge in an RV during rush hour and use the Mario Cuomo (Tappan Zee) Bridge instead for a smoother trip into New York.
