Camping near Perth Amboy
Perth Amboy sits on Raritan Bay in Middlesex County, at the mouth of the Raritan River across from Staten Island. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of New York Harbor to the north, the Jersey Shore to the south, and the Pine Barrens edge to the west, making it a practical staging point for a multi-stop Northeast trip.
Campground options split into three groups. Urban, hookup-equipped RV parking is available at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, roughly 20 miles north with ferry and PATH access to Manhattan. Wooded, family-oriented campgrounds sit within an hour to the south at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township and Allaire State Park in Farmingdale, though note that Allaire's family campsites are temporarily closed for facility construction. Private sites at Pine Cone Campgrounds add another inland option.
For travelers combining the trip with a New York City visit, Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, offers tent and RV sites on former airfield grounds with bus and subway access to Manhattan.
Things to do around Perth Amboy
Water access defines much of the local recreation. The Raritan Bay waterfront supports fishing, kayaking, and walking along the Perth Amboy waterfront promenade, with beaches at Sandy Hook and along the Monmouth County coast within a short drive.
Inland day trips reach Allaire State Park for the restored 19th-century Allaire Village and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train ride, plus miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails along the Manasquan River. Turkey Swamp Park adds a 17-acre lake for boating and fishing, an archery range, and multi-use trails through pitch pine and oak woods.
Urban day trips are the other major draw. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the PATH train and NY Waterway ferry put lower Manhattan within a short ride, and Liberty State Park, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty are all reachable by foot or short ferry.

Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open approximately April through October. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round.
June through August brings peak demand. Weekends and holiday weeks book out first, particularly the reservable sites at Turkey Swamp, where a two-night weekend minimum and three-night holiday minimum apply. Ticks are active in wooded sites from spring through fall, and black bears are present in New Jersey parks.
Spring and fall offer thinner crowds, cooler nights, and strong foliage in October. Winter camping is limited to Liberty Harbor's urban RV park, with snow, nor'easters, and freezing temperatures all possible from December into March.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book near Perth Amboy
New Jersey state park sites, including Allaire State Park's group campsites, are booked through the state's NJ Outdoors reservation portal at camping.nj.gov, with reservations accepted up to 11 months in advance. A day-use pass is required for all vehicles entering state parks, and a non-refundable service fee applies to each online reservation.
Turkey Swamp Park is run by the Monmouth County Park System. Reservations are accepted after January 1 for that calendar year and can be made online or by calling the campground office after noon. Weekends require a two-night minimum, holiday weekends a three-night minimum.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is reserved through Recreation.gov. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Pine Cone Campgrounds take reservations directly through their own booking channels.
What to expect on-site
Site character varies widely. Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a fenced gravel lot inside a working marina, with electric and water hookups, a dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry, but limited green space; sites are close together. Expect city noise and skyline views.
Turkey Swamp Park offers 64 wooded pull-through sites with water and electric hookups, drinking water, a self-serve dump station, modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry, plus fire rings and picnic tables. Motor homes up to 40 feet are accepted.
Floyd Bennett Field has no water, electric, or sewer hookups at individual sites, but a dump station, restrooms, and showers are available, and generators are allowed at RV sites during posted hours. Tents are not permitted at designated RV sites, and reservations are limited to a maximum of 14 consecutive nights.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perth%20Amboy%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Perth Amboy?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Perth Amboy. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement to drive a personal-use motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer, so your standard Class D license covers Class A, B, and C RVs you'll find on RVezy. To book on the platform, the approved driver generally needs to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's genuinely it, no road test, no extra paperwork, just hit the Garden State Parkway and go.

Every RVezy booking in Perth Amboy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered the moment you drive off. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV and gives you peace of mind without arranging separate coverage. Whether you're heading to Cheesequake State Park or rolling up toward the Catskills, you can focus on the trip instead of the paperwork.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, so you get consistent, predictable rules no matter which RV you choose. There's a money-back grace period after booking, with additional flexibility depending on how far out you cancel. You'll see the full cancellation details during checkout and in your booking confirmation, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if a tropical storm or blizzard is in the forecast for the New Jersey coast, contact RVezy support early, the team handles weather-related changes regularly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Perth Amboy?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Perth Amboy, just tick the Pet-Friendly filter when you search on RVezy. Once you've found a few favorites, message the host to share your pup's size and breed so they can confirm the fit. New Jersey is a fantastic state for traveling with dogs: Cheesequake State Park allows pets at designated campsites with proof of rabies vaccination, and Sandy Hook's Gateway National Recreation Area allows leashed dogs on most beaches outside the summer swimming season. Bring proof of vaccinations and a collapsible water bowl, the Jersey Shore boardwalks make for unforgettable sunrise walks.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Perth Amboy?
Yes, RV delivery in Perth Amboy is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving a big rig through Middlesex County traffic. Many RVezy hosts will deliver the RV straight to your driveway or to a local campground like Cheesequake State Park in Old Bridge (about 15 minutes south). Use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host for a quote, fees usually depend on mileage. The host will set everything up on-site and walk you through the systems, which is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. You literally just show up and enjoy.

From here, Atlantic City is about 100 miles south (under two hours), the Catskills and Hudson Valley are roughly 120 miles north, Cape May sits about 150 miles south at the tip of the Jersey Shore, and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania are around 90 miles west. Many travelers also use Perth Amboy as a launch point heading up I-95 toward New England. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your route fits comfortably within their policy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perth%20Amboy%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Perth Amboy, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Perth Amboy. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan/Old Bridge (about 8 miles south) offers wooded sites with a dump station, flush toilets, and showers. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, about 25 miles north, is the closest full-hookup park to Manhattan and offers skyline views including the Statue of Liberty. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold (around 21 miles south) is lakeside and family-friendly with electric sites. Book Cheesequake through camping.nj.gov, it fills fast for summer weekends.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Perth Amboy?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for a Perth Amboy RV trip. May through June brings mild 65 to 80°F days with everything in bloom, July and August deliver warm 80 to 90°F beach weather (peak Jersey Shore season), and September to mid-October is arguably the sweet spot, with crisp 55 to 75°F days, fewer crowds, and gorgeous foliage in the nearby Watchung Reservation and Delaware Water Gap. Most New Jersey state park campgrounds, including Cheesequake, are open April 1 through October 31. Pro tip: book a campervan rental in Perth Amboy for early October to catch peak fall colors without summer pricing or crowds.
weather.gov/phi/I'm first time renting an RV. Will the host help me?
Yes, and that's one of the best parts of RVezy. Every host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to operate the generator, hookups, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump procedures so you're never left guessing. You can also message the host before booking with any questions about the RV or your route. For first-time renters near Perth Amboy, a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer is usually the easiest to handle, and starting with a closer trip (like a weekend at Cheesequake State Park) lets you ease into RV life before tackling a bigger road trip. Pro tip: take a quick video during the walkthrough so you have a reference later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perth%20Amboy%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RV rental in New Jersey booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you've got a flat on the New Jersey Turnpike, a dead battery at a Wawa parking lot, or a propane issue in the Pine Barrens, one call gets help dispatched. The protection plan also covers most damage scenarios, and your host is just a message away for quick questions about the RV's specific systems. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN sticker, it speeds things up if you ever need service.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I drive my Perth Amboy RV rental into New York or across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best perks of an RV road trip from Perth Amboy. New York City is about 20 miles north (Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is a popular base), Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains are 90 miles west, and you can roll all the way up to Maine or down to Florida on I-95. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so message the host directly before booking if Niagara Falls or Montreal is on your list. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: download an RV-specific GPS app to avoid low bridges on the Garden State and Merritt Parkways.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an RV in New Jersey?
Realistic numbers help you plan smart: campervans and Class B RVs get roughly 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New Jersey is the only state in the US where attendants pump your gas for you, so just stay in your seat and enjoy the break. Budget around $50 to $120 per day in fuel for a typical Northeast loop. Pro tip: fuel up before crossing into New York or Connecticut, where prices typically run higher.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/gasattendant.htmHow far in advance should I book a campground near Perth Amboy?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book your campsite as soon as you book your RV, ideally three to four months out, since Cheesequake State Park and other New Jersey state campgrounds open reservations on a rolling window through camping.nj.gov. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City fills fast for July 4th and fall foliage weekends, so aim for at least two months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, two to three weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have last-minute openings even in July, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip Perth Amboy locals love.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Perth Amboy?
Perth Amboy sits at a busy crossroads, the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Route 9 all converge nearby, so plan your departure outside weekday rush hours (6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM) for a much smoother start. Watch for low clearances on the Garden State Parkway's older bridges and on the historic Merritt Parkway in Connecticut (which bans most commercial and oversized vehicles). Roads are flat and well-paved through central New Jersey, but Jersey Shore beach towns get tight in summer. Pro tip: a motorhome rental in Perth Amboy is much easier to handle if you let the host deliver it to your first campground, skipping the local traffic entirely.
nj.gov/transportation/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Perth Amboy?
Campgrounds within easy reach of Perth Amboy offer everything from basic state park sites to full-hookup resorts. Cheesequake State Park has a dump station, flush toilets, hot showers, fire rings, and picnic tables, but no water or electric at individual sites, so arrive with full freshwater tanks. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City has 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, laundry, and WiFi. Turkey Swamp Park offers a dump station and electric sites. For fresh water and dump stations on the road, check Sanidumps.com or the AllStays app. Pro tip: top off propane in Perth Amboy before you head out, refills at local stations are often cheaper than at campgrounds.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/What's actually inside the RVs I'll find in Perth Amboy?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped modern RVs are. Most listings on RVezy include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping space for two to eight people, dinette, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes often add a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, slide-outs for extra living space, and sometimes a separate bedroom. Campervans are cozier but still pack kitchenettes and convertible beds. Each listing shows exactly what's included, from WiFi hotspots to bike racks and outdoor gear, so you'll know before you book. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group size for your Perth Amboy RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perth%20Amboy%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in Perth Amboy offer all kinds of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, bike racks, kayak racks, portable grills, generators, mobile WiFi hotspots, and pet packages. Pickup and drop-off times are typically flexible (many hosts use a midday pickup and late-morning return window, but message them to coordinate). Mileage allowances vary by host, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and a per-mile fee beyond that, or unlimited mileage for an upfront fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book, asking after pickup sometimes means they're already reserved for the next guest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perth%20Amboy%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host), which keeps everything protected and documented. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment to cover any potential damage or extra cleaning, and the amount is shown clearly on the listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you received it (and within the agreed mileage and generator hours), the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video with the host at both pickup and drop-off in Perth Amboy, it protects everyone and keeps the deposit return smooth.
