Campgrounds near Port Monmouth
Port Monmouth sits on Raritan Bay in Monmouth County, roughly an hour south of Manhattan and a short drive from the northern Jersey Shore. Campground options in the area fall into three groups: urban RV parks near New York City, state and county parks with wooded sites, and private family campgrounds in the pine flats west of the shore.
Across the bay in Jersey City, Liberty Harbor RV Park operates as a marina-adjacent lot with water and electric hookups and views across New York Harbor. To the north in Brooklyn, Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October, offers tent and RV camping, permits generators during limited hours at RV sites, and has a dump station.
Inland, Allaire State Park has 45 campsites in a forested setting near the Manasquan River, plus 10 shelters that are cabin-like structures with a wood stove and two double-deck bunks and sleep up to four. Turkey Swamp Park campgrounds provide facilities for tent camping and travel trailers, with 64 campsites (52 reservable, 12 first-come, first-served), all pull-through with water and electric hookups. Private Pine Cone Campgrounds in Freehold rounds out the list with full-hookup sites.
Things to do near Port Monmouth
The area works well as a base for both city trips and shore days. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, ferries, light rail, and PATH service put Lower Manhattan within reach without moving the RV.
Camp Gateway sits in the woodland habitat of Floyd Bennett Field, where visitors can tour Civil War-era forts, restored historic aircraft, and Nike missile sites, walk wooded paths, and try horseback riding, kayaking, or archery. Birders should try the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge with 300 species of migratory birds, with willets and green herons in spring and summer, or osprey and black crowned night herons year-round.
Allaire State Park is known for its historic 19th-century iron-making town, Allaire Village, and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train ride, and the Manasquan River provides freshwater fishing. Turkey Swamp Park is a 2,414-acre wooded park with a 17-acre lake for fishing, boating, and ice-skating, plus miles of trails, an archery range, and playgrounds.

Jacek was amazing with communication and having the advantages being able to have the RV delivered and set up was amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. The camper was super clean, and comfortable. We had a great time.

Sites and amenities differ widely between operators. Liberty Harbor RV Park is an urban lot rather than a traditional campground, with paved sites, water and electric, showers and laundry, and easy transit access rather than trees.
Floyd Bennett Field is more rustic. Camp Gateway Brooklyn has 32 tent sites and 17 RV sites and is divided into five sections. Nearly all campsites are on level ground, and while gnats and a few mosquitoes appear in late June, mosquitoes are a big problem from July through October. Pack repellent.
At Turkey Swamp Park, all campsites are pull-through with water and electric hookups. Allaire's family sites are wooded with fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms and showers, and no individual hookups. Black bears are present in all New Jersey parks, so follow the park's bear safety protocols and store food securely.
