Campgrounds near Preakness, New Jersey
Preakness sits in Wayne Township, Passaic County, in northern New Jersey's Highlands region. It puts RV travelers within an hour of several state parks, a rustic community campground, and one full-hookup urban RV park across the Hudson from Manhattan. The terrain runs from wooded ridges and glacial lakes to the dense suburbs of the New York metro, so campgrounds nearby range from primitive tent-only sites to paved pull-throughs with sewer, water, and electric.
The closest options split into three groups. State-run parks such as Wawayanda State Park in Vernon and West Milford and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park across the New York line handle drive-in tent and small-trailer camping. Private grounds like Black Bear Campground in nearby Florida, NY offer standard RV hookups. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City serves travelers who want to base an RV near NYC transit.
Camp Wyanokie, adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest, is included for context but is tent-only and not suitable for motorhomes or trailers.
Things to do near Preakness
Hiking dominates the area. Trails from Camp Wyanokie feed into the Wyanokie plateau and Norvin Green South, with paths maintained by the New York / New Jersey Trail Conference. Wawayanda State Park adds more than sixty miles of trails, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail and the climb to Pinwheel Vista.
On the water, Wawayanda Lake holds landlocked salmon, and only a handful of deep New Jersey lakes have suitable year-round habitat for cold-water fish such as trout and salmon. Kayak rentals and a boat launch are available at the park in season. Beaver Pond Campground puts guests inside Harriman State Park with lake swimming and dozens of trailheads.
Families staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park can walk to the PATH train for museums, ballgames, and the Statue of Liberty ferry.

Most public campgrounds in the area run a spring-to-fall season. Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman follows a similar April-through-October pattern set by New York State Parks. Private grounds such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park generally operate year-round, and Camp Wyanokie is open year-round for tent camping.
Late spring and early fall are the best windows for RV travel: mild days, cool nights, low bug pressure, and easier reservations. Summer weekends fill quickly at both state parks, especially sites near lakes and beaches. July and August bring warm, humid weather and afternoon thunderstorms, and leaf-peepers arrive in mid-October as the Highlands turn color.
Winter camping is limited to a few private grounds. Roads inside state parks are not plowed to campsite level, and water is shut off at most state facilities from November through March.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Preakness
New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda, are booked online at camping.nj.gov. Campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends often go the day they open, so book as far out as the system allows.
Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park is reserved through the New York State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Private grounds such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites and typically require a deposit.
Camp Wyanokie reservations are handled by the New York / New Jersey Trail Conference through the campground's own booking page. Note that Camp Wyanokie cannot accommodate trailers, RVs, motorhomes, or pop-up campers; its sites are rustic tent sites only.
What to expect
Amenities vary widely. State park sites in this region tend to be primitive: pit or composting toilets, no showers, and water only from a central spigot. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Plan to arrive with full fresh-water tanks and a plan for dumping on the way out.
Black Bear Campground offers a standard RV setup with electric, water, and sewer hookups plus a dump station, pool, and Wi-Fi. Liberty Harbor RV Park is a paved urban lot with full hookups, best suited to smaller rigs.
Black bears are present in New Jersey, and guests are required to keep a clean campsite. Store food in the RV or bear boxes, never in tents or coolers left outside. Cell service is spotty inside Wawayanda and Harriman.
