Camping near Prospect Park, New Jersey
Prospect Park sits in Passaic County in northern New Jersey, roughly 20 miles west of Manhattan and within easy reach of the Highlands, Ramapo Mountains, and the New York state line. The area gives RV travelers a rare combination: quick access to New York City and an hour or less to forested state parks with lakes and hiking.
Campground options split into two categories. For urban trips, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers full hookup sites within a short transit ride of Lower Manhattan. For woodland stays, options west and north include Camp Wyanokie in West Milford, adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest, the primitive Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, which has no electrical hookups and accommodates trailers or RVs up to 30 feet long, Wawayanda State Park just over the ridge in Sussex and Passaic counties, and Black Bear Campground across the New York line in Orange County.
Most travelers use Prospect Park itself as a staging point and drive out to their site.
Things to do near Prospect Park
Hiking dominates the region. Norvin Green State Forest, next to Camp Wyanokie, has ridge trails with views over the Wanaque Reservoir and the surrounding highlands. Harriman State Park adds an extensive trail network across 46,000 acres, along with 31 lakes, swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati, and fishing and boating with the appropriate permits.
Lake time is the other draw. Wawayanda State Park centers on the 255-acre Wawayanda Lake, which supports swimming, paddling, and cold-water fishing, and a section of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park.
For city days, Liberty Harbor RV Park puts travelers within a short PATH or ferry ride of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

The camping window in this part of New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley is defined by state park schedules. Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 to October 31. Just across the state line, Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October.
Summer weekends fill fast because these parks sit within an hour of New York City. Harriman in particular is a favored weekend getaway for city residents, so weekend bookings should be secured well in advance. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, and is often the best window for RV travel: cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and easier mid-week reservations.
Winter narrows the options sharply. State park campgrounds close, but Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, and Black Bear RV Park also stays open through the winter with a 210-day stay limit per twelve-month period.

How to book campgrounds near Prospect Park
Reservation systems vary by operator. Wawayanda State Park bookings are made online through camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey state parks reservation portal. Beaver Pond Campground reservations are handled through the New York State Parks Reserve America system and can be made up to 9 months in advance, with new inventory opening at 8 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. weekends from mid-March through Labor Day.
Private parks book direct. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations by phone, and Black Bear RV Park and Camp Wyanokie both accept bookings through their own websites or partner platforms.
Book Harriman and Wawayanda summer weekends eight to twelve weeks ahead, longer for holiday weekends. Liberty Harbor fills fast whenever a major event is scheduled in New York City.
What to expect on site
Hookup levels differ widely. Liberty Harbor RV Park offers full hookup sites with 30-amp and 50-amp electric service, water, pull-through sites for larger rigs, and restroom, laundry, and Wi-Fi facilities. Black Bear RV Park sites include full hookups with water, sewer, and electric at 20, 30, and 50 amp, along with Wi-Fi, picnic tables, and fire rings.
State park sites are more rustic. Beaver Pond provides shared full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Camp Wyanokie is a rustic area that does not accommodate RVs, with no running water, electricity, or Wi-Fi at the sites. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Prospect Park, NJ?

On RVezy, campervans typically start around $125 per night, travel trailers range from about $95 to $185 per night, and Class C motorhomes generally fall between $185 and $325 per night. Hosts in Passaic County set their own pricing, so booking midweek or in the shoulder season (April or October) often unlocks better rates. A quick search lets you compare real listings from neighbors in Prospect Park, Paterson, and Wayne in minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Park%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Jersey?
Good news: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Prospect Park. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, even for larger Class A motorhomes. On RVezy, approved renters are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Then you're ready to hit the Garden State Parkway.

Booking your Prospect Park RV trip is lower risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. Every reservation includes a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund options apply based on how far in advance you cancel. You can review the full details on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. If you're watching a forecast (hello, late-season coastal storms), message your host early so you can plan together and review your options under the standard cancellation policy.

On the road, your pup will love nearby spots like Goffle Brook Park in Hawthorne and the Garret Mountain Reservation trails in Woodland Park. Many regional campgrounds, including Panther Lake Camping Resort and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm, welcome leashed pets. passaiccountynj.org/government/departments/parks_and_recreation/index.phpCan the RV be delivered to me in Prospect Park?
Yes, RV delivery in Prospect Park is offered by many local hosts, which is a game-changer if you're nervous about driving a big rig through dense North Jersey traffic. Your host can bring the RV to your driveway, a nearby campground like Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, or a launching point near the Delaware Water Gap, then walk you through hookups, slide-outs, generator, and water systems. Delivery fees commonly run between $2 and $5 per mile, with some hosts offering free local delivery within 10 to 20 miles. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it.

Acadia National Park in Maine is a stunning week-long trip at roughly 480 miles. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning big miles, message the host to discuss options.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Park%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Prospect Park, NJ?
The best campgrounds near Prospect Park give you real Garden State variety within a 90-minute drive. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 25 miles northwest) is Morris County's largest park with RV sites, electric hookups, and lake views. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (roughly 40 miles) offers full hookups, a private lake, and a heated pool. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm in Sussex (about 45 miles) is a working-farm campground kids love. Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River (about 60 miles) is the rustic pick. For state parks, book through camping.nj.gov well in advance, since sites at Stokes State Forest and High Point go fast for summer weekends.
camping.nj.gov/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Prospect Park?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Prospect Park and the surrounding North Jersey region. May and June bring temperatures in the 65 to 80°F range with blooming dogwoods and fewer mosquitoes, while September and early October deliver crisp 55 to 75°F days and spectacular foliage in the Kittatinny Mountains. July and August are warm (often 85 to 90°F with humidity), perfect for shore trips to Cape May or Long Beach Island. Winter rentals are possible too, with some hosts listing four-season RVs with heated tanks for a snowy Pocono getaway. Book peak fall foliage weekends (early to mid-October) at least two months ahead.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay. First time renting an RV is easier than you think, and Prospect Park hosts are known for thorough walkthroughs. At pickup (or delivery), your host typically spends 30 to 60 minutes showing you exactly how everything works: leveling, water hookups, propane, awning, generator, and how to dump the tanks. You can message them anytime during your trip with questions. Many first-timers start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan, which drives much like an oversized van and is well suited to North Jersey roads. RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance is in your back pocket the entire time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003363453-Renter-Help-CenterWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
Breathe easy: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, whether you're parked at a campsite in Wharton State Forest or stuck on the shoulder of I-287. One phone call gets you help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. For RV-specific questions (how do I reset the inverter?), your host is your first call. They know their rig best and most respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Save your host's number and the RVezy support line to your phone before you leave Prospect Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037971013-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most RV rentals from Prospect Park, NJ. Popular cross-state RV road trips include the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, the Catskills and Finger Lakes in New York, coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island, and Acadia National Park in Maine. Travel into Canada (think Quebec City or the Bay of Fundy) is allowed by many hosts but requires advance approval and confirmation of insurance coverage, so message the host before booking. Travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. With New York City just about 20 miles east and the entire Eastern Seaboard at your wheels, your options are huge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a New Jersey RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables for any RV trip from Prospect Park, but it's easy to plan. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG). New Jersey is also the only state where attendants pump your gas, it's the law. For a 500-mile round trip in a Class C at 10 MPG, multiply 50 gallons by the current pump price to estimate your total. Check current state averages before you go, and fill up in NJ before crossing into New York or Pennsylvania where prices are often higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For the best campgrounds near Prospect Park, book early, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage. New Jersey state park sites (Stokes State Forest, Worthington, High Point, Spruce Run) can be reserved well in advance at camping.nj.gov and prime weekends often sell out quickly after release. Private campgrounds like Panther Lake or Mahlon Dickerson Reservation typically book up 2 to 6 months ahead for holiday weekends. Midweek, you can often score sites a week or two out. Set a calendar reminder for early in the year to grab Memorial Day and July 4th weekends as soon as they open for the upcoming season.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Prospect Park, NJ?
Prospect Park sits in dense northern New Jersey, so a few smart moves make driving an RV here much easier. Avoid rush hour on Route 4, Route 46, and I-80 (roughly 7 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.), especially heading toward the George Washington Bridge. The Garden State Parkway has commercial vehicle restrictions on its southern sections, so confirm your rig is permitted and always know your RV's exact height before approaching parkways and older overpasses. Plan fuel stops on interstates like I-80 and I-287 where it's easier to maneuver a larger vehicle.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at local campgrounds?
Campgrounds near Prospect Park, NJ generally offer a solid mix of amenities. Most private parks (Panther Lake, Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm) provide 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus dump stations, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. State park campgrounds like Stokes and Worthington tend to be more rustic: expect electric at some sites, potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and a centralized dump station. Need to refill fresh water or dump on the road? Look for Flying J or Pilot travel centers along I-80 and I-287. Confirm your campsite's amp service before arriving so you don't pop a breaker plugging in.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What's actually inside an RV I rent in Prospect Park?
Most RV rentals in Prospect Park come fully equipped so you can move in and start your trip. Expect a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), and dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping space. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a TV, a generator for off-grid power, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many hosts also offer linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and even bikes as add-ons. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host with any must-haves, like a CPAP-friendly inverter or rooftop solar.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Park%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Prospect Park offer all kinds of add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours (often a few free hours per day, then about $3 to $5 per extra hour), bike racks, kayaks, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location in the afternoon, with dropoff in the late morning, though many hosts are flexible if you ask. Mileage policies vary, with some offering unlimited and others 100 to 150 free miles per day. Bundle add-ons when you book to lock in pricing rather than adding them last-minute.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Park%2C%20New%20JerseyHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure on RVezy: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after dropoff, assuming no damage or extra cleaning fees. For a smooth Prospect Park RV rental, do a thorough walkthrough video with your host at pickup and dropoff to document the existing condition, and you'll have zero surprises. Keep receipts for fuel and propane if your contract requires returning the tanks full, that's one of the most common reasons for small deposit deductions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cheap RV rental options near Prospect Park for first-timers?
Yes, cheap RV rental in Prospect Park is very doable, especially if you're flexible. Campervans (Class B) and smaller travel trailers commonly start around $95 to $130 per night and are perfect for couples or small families exploring the Delaware Water Gap or Jersey Shore. To save more, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday nights are often 15 to 25 percent cheaper), travel in May or September instead of peak July or August, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and compare delivery fees versus mileage charges. Filter by price range and Instant Book on RVezy to see available options instantly. A weekend family RV trip Prospect Park style can comfortably come in under $700 all-in.
