Camping near Ringwood, New Jersey
Ringwood sits in Passaic County in the northern New Jersey Highlands, at the heart of the Ramapo Mountains and within easy reach of the New York metro area. Harriman State Park, just across the state line, is the state's second largest at 48,556 acres and features 31 lakes, streams, and public camping areas roughly 30 miles north of New York City. The town works well as a base for RV travellers who want forested trails, lake swimming, and historic sites without a long drive from the George Washington Bridge.
Ringwood State Park itself does not offer camping, so RV travellers typically stage at nearby parks and private campgrounds. Options within a short drive include Camp Wyanokie in the Wyanokie Highlands, Wawayanda State Park across the Sussex County line, Beaver Pond Campground in New York's Harriman State Park, the full-hookup Black Bear Campground in nearby Florida, New York, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm.
The mix suits families: state park sites are rustic and forested, while private parks add hookups, pools, and playgrounds. Trip planners should note that state park campgrounds in this region are seasonal, so timing and reservation strategy matter.
Things to do around Ringwood
Ringwood State Park anchors the local activity list, with a botanical garden, two historic manor houses, and Shepherd Lake for swimming and paddling. Both Skylands and Ringwood Manor sit within the park, and trails link the two estates. Shepherd Lake permits only electric motors and offers a boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, with seasonal rentals in summer.
Trail users have plenty of ground to cover. Most paths are used for hiking, though some are multi-use with horseback riders and mountain bikers. Anglers can fish Shepherd Lake, Sally's Pond, and Ringwood Brook with a valid New Jersey licence.
Across the state line, Harriman State Park adds swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati, plus an extensive backcountry trail network maintained by the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference.

Camping in the Ringwood area is a warm-season affair for most public land. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site; select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, and there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. The campground is open from April 1 to October 31. Wawayanda State Park camping is also open April 1 to Oct. 31.
Summer draws the biggest crowds and heaviest bookings, especially on weekends. Spring and fall bring milder weather, thinner traffic, and strong foliage colour by mid-October. Spring and fall are ideal for hiking with cooler temperatures and lighter crowds, while summer offers warm days for swimming and paddling but books out quickly. Winter brings cold temperatures, snow on mountain roads, and limited access to public campgrounds in the area.
Winter travellers should plan around private, year-round parks, since state park campgrounds close after October 31.

How to book campgrounds near Ringwood
State park sites on the New Jersey side are booked through the state's official system. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov. The New York side of the region uses a different platform: camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Same-day flexibility exists but is limited. New York State Park Campgrounds allow same-day reservations until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and this applies to campsites only.
Private parks such as Black Bear Campground and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm book directly through their own websites, and summer weekends fill quickly.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Ringwood area lean rustic on public land. Each Beaver Pond site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and there are shared full-service bathrooms centrally located, with convenient access to swimming beaches, hiking trails, and neighboring state park facilities. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Rules are stricter than at many private parks. Campsite occupancy at Beaver Pond is limited to six persons including children and infants, guests and visitors are not permitted, pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite.
For full hookups, laundry, and family amenities, private parks fill the gap with water, sewer, and electric connections.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ringwood, NJ?
RV rental in Ringwood, NJ is surprisingly affordable when you book through a peer-to-peer marketplace like RVezy. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans range from $150 to $225, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes run $200 to $375 depending on size, age, and season. To find a cheap RV rental in Ringwood, aim for weekday pickups, shoulder months like late April or October, and trips of 4+ nights since many hosts offer weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message a few hosts directly to ask about promotions before locking in your dates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ringwood, NJ?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ringwood, NJ. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for recreational vehicles used for personal, non-commercial purposes, so even a large Class A motorhome can be driven on a standard Class D license. To book on RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid license, which gets verified securely through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before your trip and you're set to explore the Ramapo Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my Ringwood RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Ringwood includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road toward Ringwood State Park or Harriman with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host, which means you control the balance between price and protection. While this isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection for renters and removes the worry that usually comes with driving someone else's RV. Pro tip: review the coverage options at booking and pick the tier that matches your comfort level for your New Jersey RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book a motorhome rental in Ringwood?
You have flexibility built right into the booking. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period after booking so you can lock in your dates without feeling stuck. Refund amounts after that depend on how close you are to your trip start date. If something changes, log into your RVezy account or contact support, and they'll walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Ringwood RV rental selection, knowing the cancellation safety net has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ringwood?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Ringwood. Just check the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy when you search, and you'll see listings that welcome dogs (some hosts charge a small pet fee, typically $25 to $75 per trip). Ringwood is a fantastic dog destination: leashed pets are welcome throughout Ringwood State Park, including the trails around Shepherd Lake and the carriage roads near Ringwood Manor. Nearby Norvin Green State Forest and the Wyanokie High Point trail are also leashed-dog friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, and pack a towel for muddy paws after Ramapo Mountain hikes.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/ringwood-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Ringwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Ringwood is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig on mountain switchbacks. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campsite at Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, Camp Taylor near the Delaware Water Gap, or even a private driveway in the Ramapo area. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and their delivery radius (most cover 30 to 60 miles). The host will level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Pro tip: delivery turns your rental into a stationary cabin on wheels, ideal for a stress-free family RV trip Ringwood weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyHow does mileage work, and can I get unlimited mileage for a Ringwood RV trip?
Mileage is straightforward on RVezy: hosts set their own daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer unlimited mileage RV rental, which is perfect for longer routes. From Ringwood, popular destinations include Harriman State Park (about 20 miles), the Delaware Water Gap (about 50 miles), Lake George NY (about 230 miles), Cape May (about 175 miles), and Acadia National Park (about 460 miles). Any miles over the included allowance run roughly $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: estimate your route on a map before booking, then filter or message hosts who advertise unlimited or generous mileage if you're planning a bigger loop through the Catskills or up to New England.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Ringwood, NJ for RVs?
You have great options for RV camping Ringwood within a short drive, since Ringwood State Park itself does not offer RV camping. Top picks include Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, NY (about 15 miles north, with electric/water and a dump station), Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia, NJ (about 50 miles west, full hookups and shaded sites), Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson Township (about 25 miles, the closest electric sites in Morris County), and Stokes State Forest near Branchville (about 35 miles). For closer-in stays, Pine Cliff Lake and Cedar Lakes private campgrounds are popular too. Pro tip: book Harriman and New Jersey state park sites through the official state systems well ahead for peak summer weekends.
camping.nj.gov/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Ringwood?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from Ringwood, with the peak being late September to mid-October when the Ramapo Mountains light up with fall color. Summer days run 75 to 88°F with comfortable nights in the 60s, perfect for swimming at Shepherd Lake. Spring (April to early June) brings wildflowers and 55 to 75°F days, while October delivers crisp 45 to 65°F weather and arguably the best foliage in the New York metro area. Winters get cold (often 20 to 35°F with snow), but hardy RVers do winter camping in heated rigs at nearby private parks. Pro tip: aim for the last weekend of September for peak leaf-peeping along the Skyline Drive.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Ringwood a good place to start?
Yes, Ringwood is a fantastic spot for first time renting an RV. Most local hosts on RVezy provide a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host anytime during your trip with questions. For first-timers, choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, which handle easily on Greenwood Lake Turnpike and Sloatsburg Road. Better yet, opt for delivery so you skip driving entirely. Pro tip: pick a campground within 30 miles of pickup for night one (Mahlon Dickerson or Harriman) so you can get comfortable with the RV before tackling a longer road trip from Ringwood.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route 287, run into engine trouble climbing Bear Mountain, or have a propane issue at your campsite, help is one phone call away. Your host is typically your first point of contact for quick fixes (they know the rig best), and RVezy support is available around the clock if you need to escalate. Tow services, lockout help, jump starts, and tire changes are all part of the standard coverage. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before pulling out of the driveway in Ringwood.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Ringwood RV rental to Canada or another state?
You can cross state lines on your RV rental in Ringwood, NJ, and many guests do exactly that, with popular routes heading north into New York's Adirondacks, west to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, or south through Delaware to Chesapeake Bay. Crossing into Canada (think Niagara Falls or Montreal) may be allowed depending on the specific host and the protection plan, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a classic RV road trip from Ringwood is the 5 to 7 day Adirondacks loop via Lake George and the High Peaks region.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a New Jersey RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental in Ringwood is easier than most people expect. New Jersey gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you can fill up before crossing into pricier New York. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but your tow vehicle will drop to roughly 10 to 13 MPG. Class B campervans average 17 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 6 to 10 MPG. For a 300 mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: New Jersey is a full-service gas state by law, so just stay in the driver's seat and let the attendant fill the tank.
nj.gov/oag/newsreleases17/pr20170103a.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Ringwood?
For the best campgrounds near Ringwood, NJ, book as early as you can. New Jersey State Parks accept reservations well in advance through camping.nj.gov (the official state portal), and New York State Parks like Harriman use ReserveAmerica with a similar window. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends in October sell out fastest, so set a calendar reminder for the opening of the booking window if you're targeting a specific holiday. Mid-week stays and private campgrounds (Camp Taylor, Cedar Lakes) usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: if your first-choice site is full, check back weekly. Cancellations free up sites constantly, and the official NJ system shows real-time availability.
camping.nj.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Ringwood?
Driving conditions around Ringwood are very manageable for RVs as long as you pick a reasonable size. Local roads like Greenwood Lake Turnpike (Route 511) and Skyline Drive wind through the Ramapo Mountains with some grades and curves but no extreme switchbacks. Avoid the Palisades Interstate Parkway with any RV (it's restricted to passenger vehicles only) and watch low clearances on the Lincoln Tunnel and parts of NYC if you head east. Interstate 287 and Route 17 are the easy ways in and out. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: a Class C under 28 feet handles every road you'll want to drive from Ringwood, including the scenic Bear Mountain Bridge into New York's Hudson Valley.
nj.gov/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ringwood?
Campgrounds near Ringwood range from rustic to fully loaded, so you can match your comfort level. Harriman's Beaver Pond offers electric sites, comfort stations with hot showers, a dump station, and lake swimming. Camp Taylor and Cedar Lakes offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation has electric sites and potable water with a centralized dump. For dumping and fresh water on the road, the Mahlon Dickerson dump station is one of the closest public options to Ringwood. Pro tip: most northern NJ campgrounds are in black bear country, so always store food and trash in the RV or bear lockers overnight.
camping.nj.gov/What's inside a typical RV rental in Ringwood?
Most RV rentals in Ringwood come fully equipped so you can roll in and start enjoying your trip. Expect a real bed (queen or larger in most Class C and Class A units), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and propane furnace), and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many hosts include a TV, generator for off-grid power, outdoor awning, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Ramapo Mountains, so plan on cell-based hotspots. Pro tip: the listing page shows exactly what each RV includes, and you can message the host to ask about extras like bed linens, a coffee maker, or a backup camera before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get with my Ringwood RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy in Ringwood commonly offer add-ons that take the hassle out of trip prep. Popular options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bikes, kayaks (perfect for Shepherd Lake or Greenwood Lake), generators, and propane top-ups. Delivery and setup is the most-loved add-on for first-timers, with fees typically based on distance. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home address; some will meet you at a nearby campground for a small fee. Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day included). Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package and you can show up at the campground with just a duffel bag and groceries.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ringwood,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your campervan rental in Ringwood, you'll pay through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card; never pay a host directly off-platform. Your host sets a security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value), which is held as a pre-authorization on your card, separate from your booking payment. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition it left, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the interior and exterior at both pickup and dropoff. It's the single best habit for keeping your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold-weather RV camping near Ringwood?
Cold-weather camping in the Ringwood area is doable and honestly magical when the Ramapo Mountains get a fresh dusting of snow. Look for RV listings with a four-season package: heated holding tanks, enclosed underbelly, propane furnace, and the ability to plug into 30 or 50 amp shore power at a winter-open campground. A few private parks near West Milford stay open year-round, while most state park campgrounds close from late October through April. Add antifreeze to the gray and black tanks, keep the propane topped up, and use the furnace (not just electric heaters) to keep pipes from freezing. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm the RV is winter-rated, then enjoy a quiet, leaf-bare hike to the New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands.
