Campgrounds near Watsessing
Watsessing sits in Bloomfield, Essex County, inside the dense northern New Jersey suburbs about 12 miles west of Manhattan. RV travelers here choose between one urban RV park on the Hudson waterfront and a ring of state and national parkland to the north and east, most of it within about an hour's drive.
The closest option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, which offers 30-amp and 50-amp electric plus water hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and sits within walking distance of PATH service to Manhattan. Camp Wyanokie in West Milford is a rustic, tent-only alternative in the Highlands adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest. To the east, Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn is part of Gateway National Recreation Area and takes both tents and RVs.
For a more traditional woodland stay, Beaver Pond Campground in New York's Harriman State Park and Wawayanda State Park in the New Jersey Highlands are both under an hour and a half from Watsessing.
Things to do near Watsessing
The main draw from a Watsessing base is New York City itself. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the Marin Boulevard PATH station reaches 33rd Street or the World Trade Center in about 15 minutes, and NY Waterway ferry service to Pier 11 at Wall Street is also within walking distance.
Outdoor plans lean northwest. Wawayanda State Park has over 60 miles of marked trails plus a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail, and Harriman State Park offers more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Camp Wyanokie connects to Norvin Green trails, and Floyd Bennett Field adds birding at the adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, paved bike paths, and an archery range.

Camping season in the Watsessing area is short and front-loaded. Wawayanda State Park is open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park runs on the same April through October window. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October and offers tent and RV camping. Liberty Harbor RV Park is the year-round exception, staying open through winter.
Summer weekends are the pressure point. Beaver Pond in particular fills quickly because of its proximity to New York City, and reviewers consistently note crowded weekends with large family groups. Heat and humidity build through July and August, and campers at Floyd Bennett Field commonly report heavy mosquito activity in midsummer.
Spring shoulder weeks and September into early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color in the Highlands. Bear activity is a real concern in Harriman and the northern New Jersey parks, and campers are required to follow bear-habitat food-storage guidelines throughout the season.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book
Reservation systems vary by campground. New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda, are booked online through camping.nj.gov up to 11 months in advance. Group sites at Wawayanda require a minimum of seven people and are best arranged through the park office.
Beaver Pond in Harriman uses the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica system, with reservations available up to 9 months in advance. From March 15 through Labor Day, sites open at 8 AM on weekdays and 9 AM on weekends. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field books through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, with walk-ins possible when sites remain open. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly through its website or by phone, and summer weekend nights should be locked in well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups are the biggest planning variable. Liberty Harbor offers 30-amp and 50-amp electric plus water hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry, but sites are essentially paved marina spaces with limited green space. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups for trailers, does not permit alcohol, and does not allow pets; select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field has restrooms, showers, and a dump station but no individual hookups. Camp Wyanokie is tent-only and does not accommodate RVs. Cell service is spotty in the Highlands parks, quiet hours are enforced, and bear-country food storage is mandatory at the wooded sites.
