Campgrounds and RV parks near Arroyo Seco, NM

Taos Ski Valley sits roughly 20 minutes uphill and runs lift-served hiking and scenic rides in summer, with access to Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico. The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and the Wild Rivers area within Rio Grande del Norte National Monument offer overlooks, raft put-ins, and rim trails. Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is open to visitors on a published schedule set by the tribe. The Enchanted Circle loop links Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, and Angel Fire in a single day drive. Closer in, riders use the Rift Valley Trail network at Taos Valley Overlook, anglers fish Eagle Nest Lake, soakers visit Black Rock Hot Springs near the gorge, and visitors browse galleries and the village plaza in Arroyo Seco itself.

Taos County runs through its coldest stretch between December and February, with snow a frequent sight, particularly in December and January, making winter trips practical mainly for skiers staging near Taos Ski Valley. Many Carson National Forest campgrounds close from late fall through spring, and several private RV parks reduce services or shut entirely; private parks in Taos proper tend to stay open year round with winter rates and limited amenities. Late May through early June brings dry, mild weather and runoff-fed whitewater on the Rio Grande. Late summer is typically the wettest stretch, driven by the North American Monsoon, so afternoon thunderstorms and brief road washouts are common in July and August. September and early October deliver the area's signature aspen color along the Enchanted Circle and Wheeler Peak corridor, with cool nights and stable days. The last spring freeze is near mid-May and the first fall freeze near early October, so shoulder-season RVers should expect frosty mornings.

Expect a high-desert mountain setting: piñon and juniper at the valley floor, ponderosa and aspen at higher elevations, and big sky views toward the Sangre de Cristos. Private RV parks in the Taos and Questa area generally offer full hookups, level gravel pads, dump stations, Wi-Fi of variable strength, and laundry, with cell coverage strongest along US 64 and NM 522. Forest campgrounds are typically dry, with vault toilets and no hookups, and drinking water may be seasonal. Bears are active spring through fall, so food storage rules apply. Roads to Taos Ski Valley and into the gorge include steep grades and tight curves; very large rigs should plan routes carefully and consider unhitching at the campground for day trips.
