Cuba, New Mexico camping overview
Cuba sits in Sandoval County along US 550, roughly midway between Albuquerque and Farmington, at the western foot of the Sierra Nacimiento. The village serves as a practical staging point for RV trips into the Jemez Mountains, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the high-desert country north toward the Rio Chama. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail crosses the nearby San Pedro Parks Wilderness on its way to Cuba, making the village a recognized trail-town stop.
Campground options in the area run from developed state park sites with limited hookups to primitive Forest Service camping. Fenton Lake State Park sits at 7,650 feet in the Jemez Mountains southeast of Cuba, while Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center lies north along US 84 near Abiquiu. Farther north near Tierra Amarilla, Pinon Beach at El Vado Lake State Park and Salmon Run at Heron Lake State Park offer high-elevation lakeside camping. Stone Lake, on Jicarilla Apache land, adds a tribal fishing destination to the west.
Elevations across these campgrounds range from about 6,900 feet in Cuba itself to well over 8,000 feet in the surrounding forest, so RV renters should plan for cool nights even in midsummer.
Things to do near Cuba
Hiking is the primary draw. The San Pedro Parks Wilderness covers 41,132 acres in the Santa Fe National Forest, with elevations ranging from 8,300 feet up to 10,592 feet at San Pedro Peaks, and the Continental Divide Trail crosses it on its way to Cuba. The Las Vacas Trail from near San Gregorio Reservoir is the main artery into the central parks.
Anglers head to Fenton Lake for stocked rainbow and brown trout, El Vado and Heron for kokanee salmon and lake trout, and streams inside the wilderness for native cutthroat. Day trips include Chaco Culture National Historical Park to the west, Ghost Ranch and the red-rock country made famous by Georgia O'Keeffe to the north, and the Jemez hot springs and Valles Caldera National Preserve to the southeast.

Summer is peak season. Daytime temperatures at Cuba's elevation stay comfortable, and afternoon monsoon thunderstorms build almost daily from July into August, with July delivering the year's heaviest rainfall at roughly 59 mm. Sites at Fenton Lake State Park and the lakes near Tierra Amarilla fill well ahead on summer weekends, and Stage I or Stage II fire restrictions are common across the Santa Fe National Forest.
Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and aspen color in the Jemez and San Pedro Parks. Daytime highs typically ease from the 70s in September into the 50s by November, with overnight lows dropping below freezing by late October.
Winter conditions are serious. Fenton Lake State Park stays open year round and even draws cross-country skiers, but higher Forest Service roads into the San Pedro Parks Wilderness are closed by snow, and comfort stations at El Vado Lake State Park are winterized due to freezing temperatures. Some El Vado facilities have also been affected by ongoing reservoir dam renovation work, so campers should confirm current status with the park before arriving.
How to book Cuba area campsites
New Mexico state park campgrounds, including Fenton Lake State Park, Pinon Beach at El Vado Lake State Park, and Salmon Run at Heron Lake State Park, are booked through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be reserved for today and up to six months in advance, online or by phone.
Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center handles its own bookings directly through the ranch, with a mix of tent, RV, and hookup sites on a privately operated property. Stone Lake on Jicarilla Apache land is managed by the tribe, and permits or reservations are arranged through Jicarilla Game and Fish rather than a state or federal portal.
For summer weekends and holidays, booking as soon as the six-month window opens is strongly recommended, especially for the limited electric and full-hookup sites.
What to expect on the ground
Most sites in this area sit at high elevation, so RV renters should pack layers, warm bedding, and expect thin air and cool nights. Hookups are limited. Fenton Lake State Park has about 37 campsites with only 5 offering 30-amp electric and water; there are no showers. Heron Lake and El Vado offer more developed sites, but full hookups remain scarce and most sites are electric-only or primitive.
Cell coverage is spotty once off US 550 or US 84, and grocery restocks are best handled in Cuba, Espanola, or Bernalillo before heading to camp. Off-highway vehicles are prohibited within New Mexico State Parks. Bears, elk, and mountain lions are present throughout the surrounding forest, so food storage discipline matters. Roads to some campgrounds include gravel or narrow forest routes, so RV renters with larger rigs should confirm access before towing in.
