Campgrounds and RV parks near El Rito, NM

The immediate area is built around high-desert hiking, soaking, and cultural sites. Ghost Ranch offers guided landscape tours, a small paleontology and anthropology museum, horseback riding, and access to the Chimney Rock and Kitchen Mesa trails on the property. Ojo Caliente is the main soaking destination, with mineral pools open to day visitors and RV park guests. Bandelier is home to over 70 miles of hiking trails, most located within federally designated wilderness, reached by driving south through Espanola and White Rock, and protects ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings on the Pajarito Plateau. Nambe Falls Recreational Area on Nambe Pueblo land adds a waterfall hike, fishing, and a small lake. Climbers head to the El Rito Crags, a sport and trad climbing area within Carson National Forest.

The practical camping season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Many Carson National Forest campgrounds in the area operate roughly May through early October and close for winter, and dispersed forest camping is subject to seasonal road conditions and fire restrictions. Snow can linger on higher forest roads into May. Summer brings warm days, cool nights at elevation, and the North American Monsoon. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, often with brief downpours, lightning, and localized flash flooding in canyons and arroyos. Fire restrictions and stage closures on Carson National Forest are common in dry years, especially in late spring before the monsoon arrives. Fall is the most stable window: cool nights, warm days, aspen color in the higher elevations, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited. Juniper Campground at Bandelier is open year-round, though Loop C closes November through February, while most surrounding forest and lake sites close or shift to primitive access.

Expect narrow county roads, unpaved forest access roads, and long distances between services. Fuel, groceries, and dump stations are concentrated in Espanola, Abiquiu, and Taos rather than in El Rito itself. Cell service is limited in the canyon, and no public WiFi is available at Bandelier, and GPS routing occasionally suggests roads that are not suitable for larger rigs. Site mix ranges from full-hookup pads at Ojo Caliente and Taos Monte Bello RV Park to no-hookup NPS sites at Juniper Campground and primitive Carson National Forest sites with vault toilets and no potable water. Elevation runs from about 6,000 feet to over 9,000 feet, so plan for cool nights, strong sun, and dry air. Black bears are active across the region, and food storage rules are enforced inside Bandelier.
