Campgrounds near Belmont, New York
Belmont is the county seat of Allegany County in New York's Southern Tier, set in the rolling foothills of the Allegheny Plateau along the Genesee River. The surrounding area is rural and forested, with state forests, small lakes, and trout streams within easy driving distance of the village. RV travelers use Belmont as a base for exploring western New York and the Pennsylvania Wilds just across the state line.
Private campgrounds close to town include Riverside Park Campground, Evergreen Trails Campgrounds, Trout Run Camp Resort, Willard's Country Place, and Deer Run Campground. These properties typically offer a mix of full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and seasonal sites, and most operate from spring through fall.
The 65,000-acre Allegany State Park is known for its primitive, forested valleys, un-glaciated landscape, fall leaves, and wildlife, and its two developed areas, Red House and Quaker, make it the largest state park in New York. It sits about an hour west of Belmont. Letchworth State Park, roughly an hour north, is another major draw for RV travelers basing near Belmont.
Things to do near Belmont
Outdoor recreation drives most trips. The Genesee River runs through Belmont and is popular for paddling and trout fishing, and Allegany County promotes kayaking, hiking in state forests, and ATV riding on designated county trails. Swain Resort, roughly 20 minutes north, offers downhill skiing and tubing in winter.
Day trips expand the options considerably. Allegany State Park's Red House Area features Red House Lake, the Stone Tower observation building, and paved bike paths, while the Quaker area centers on Quaker Lake, Science Lake, and hiking trails to Bear Caves and Thunder Rocks. Letchworth State Park, renowned as the Grand Canyon of the East, sends the Genesee River through a gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs as high as 600 feet.
Families also visit the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, Rock City Park, and the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk, all within a reasonable drive south.

The camping window in this part of New York is short and predictable. Most private campgrounds around Belmont open in May and close in mid to late October. State-park campsites follow a similar rhythm: campsites at Allegany are usually open from late May until the last weekend in October, while cottages and some cabins are open year-round. Letchworth's tent and trailer campground runs May 15 through October 12, with cabins available from early May through late November.
Summer, roughly late June through August, is peak season. At Allegany, peak season runs from the end of June to the end of August, and during this time cabins and cottages require a 7 or 14-night minimum stay. Weekends and holidays fill first, especially for sites with hookups.
Fall brings foliage traffic through September and mid-October, cooler nights, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited but possible in winterized cabins, and Allegany keeps groomed snowmobile trails and the Art Roscoe cross-country ski area in operation.
How to book campgrounds near Belmont
Private campgrounds near Belmont, including Riverside Park Campground, Evergreen Trails Campgrounds, Trout Run Camp Resort, Willard's Country Place, and Deer Run Campground, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and holiday weeks book earliest, so plan several weeks ahead for hookup sites that fit larger rigs.
New York state parks use a single reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only, bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica call center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Reservations are a 2-night minimum and 14-night maximum, and after the maximum stay of 14 nights you must leave the park for 48 hours before a new stay can start.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is hilly and heavily wooded, so many sites are shaded and some access roads are narrow. Drivers of larger motorhomes and towables should check length limits when booking and confirm whether a site is back-in or pull-through. Cell service is spotty in the park, and coverage in the south end is very limited.
Bears are present across the region. Allegany State Park is bear country, and campers are told not to leave food, garbage, coolers, or other containers unattended, as they can attract bears. Standard practice is to store food inside the RV or in bear-resistant containers overnight.
Firewood rules apply throughout New York. Regulations ban moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles from its source, so plan to buy firewood locally at the campground or a nearby vendor. Bring layers even in summer, as nights in the hills can be noticeably cooler than daytime highs.
