Camping near Brewster, New York
Brewster sits in eastern Putnam County, roughly an hour north of New York City in the Hudson Highlands. The area works as a base for RV travelers heading into the Taconic and Litchfield Hills, with a mix of state park campgrounds and one privately owned lakeside park within about a 30 to 45 minute drive.
The closest option is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Putnam and Dutchess counties, a park of more than 14,000 acres with 80 wooded campsites arranged along natural rock ridges. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a family-run campground in Hopewell Junction, offers RV sites and a private beach on Sylvan Lake.
Crossing east into Connecticut opens up Lake Waramaug State Park Campground in Kent and Macedonia Brook State Park, with its rustic sites along a mountain brook. Kettletown State Park sits farther south, though its campground is closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons following flood damage. Together these parks cover swimming lakes, stream fishing, and long ridge hikes, giving RV travelers based near Brewster several distinct trip styles within a short drive.
Things to do near Brewster
Water time is the anchor of most trips. Canopus Lake at Clarence Fahnestock State Park has a sandy swimming beach with rowboat and kayak rentals in summer, and its lakes and ponds hold bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked trout. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc allows swimming and non-motorized boating on Sylvan Lake, with a playground and open space for kids.
Hiking is the other draw. Fahnestock has more than 50 miles of trails, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. At Macedonia Brook State Park, the Blue Trail crosses Cobble Mountain and other peaks with long views into the Catskills and Taconics.
Lake Waramaug State Park suits paddlers and cyclists: kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals run on site through Litchfield Paddle, and the loop road around the lake is a scenic ride for confident cyclists.
