Campgrounds near Brewster Heights
Brewster Heights sits in Putnam County, New York, at the southern edge of the Hudson Highlands and within an hour's drive of both the Taconic State Parkway and the Connecticut border. The area gives RV renters access to public campgrounds in two state park systems, plus a private lakeside option, most within a 30 to 60 minute drive.
The closest public option is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a large park in the Hudson Highlands of Putnam and Dutchess counties, roughly one hour north of New York City. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a wooded campground on Sylvan Lake with both tent and full-hookup RV sites plus seasonal sites, sits northeast in Hopewell Junction.
East across the state line, Connecticut's Litchfield Hills add Macedonia Brook State Park and Lake Waramaug State Park Campground. Kettletown State Park is also in the region but its campground is currently closed due to flood damage. Together these give RV renters a mix of rustic, tent-friendly parks and full-hookup grounds within easy driving distance.
Things to do near Brewster Heights
Hiking is the headline activity. Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers miles of trails across forests, lakes, and mountains, and Macedonia Brook State Park adds more than 10 miles of trails with views of the Catskill and Taconic ranges, especially striking in fall.
On the water, Canopus Lake at Fahnestock has a sandy shore, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental. Sylvan Lake Beach Park offers swimming, fishing, non-motorized boating, a sandy beach, and a playground, which makes it a strong pick for families with young kids.
Lake Waramaug is a scenic base for paddling, cycling, and touring wineries in the Litchfield Hills.

Sylvan Lake Beach Park typically runs from spring through fall; contact the operator for exact opening and closing dates.
Connecticut's state park campgrounds follow a similar rhythm. The Lake Waramaug camping season begins Memorial Day Weekend and ends Columbus Day, with the 2026 season opening Friday, May 22 and closing Monday, October 12 at noon. Macedonia Brook opens on the same May weekend, with 2026 dates running from May 22 through early September. Kettletown State Park Campground remains closed for the 2026 season due to flood damages sustained during heavy rainfall in August 2024, with no reopening date announced.
Summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends draw the heaviest demand. Winter camping is not available at these parks, though day-use hiking and cross-country skiing continue at Fahnestock.

How to book
New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica call center, and same-day bookings are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Sylvan Lake Beach Park is privately run: campers contact the campground directly for reservations, and phone booking is the norm.
Connecticut State Parks also use ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and must be made at least one day ahead of arrival at Lake Waramaug and Macedonia Brook, with no walk-ins accepted. Popular summer weekends and fall foliage dates fill early, so opening the booking window at the 11-month mark is the safest path for RV renters targeting Saturday nights.
