Campgrounds near Brewster Hill
Brewster Hill sits in Putnam County, New York, roughly an hour north of New York City in the Hudson Highlands. The area places RV travelers within short driving range of state park campgrounds in both New York's Taconic region and Connecticut's northwestern hills, giving a mix of lakeside and wooded options within an hour or so.
The closest public campground is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, part of the New York State Parks system. Note that the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse. Across the state line, Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent, Connecticut, offers 51 rustic sites across 2,300 acres, while Lake Waramaug State Park Campground rounds out the Connecticut options with lake-oriented camping. Kettletown State Park, also in Connecticut, remains closed through the 2026 and 2027 seasons after 2024 flood damage.
For a private-park alternative, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc. is a family-run lakeside campground in Dutchess County. Together the list gives renters a spread of rustic tent-friendly parks and more amenity-heavy private grounds within easy reach of Brewster Hill.
Things to do near Brewster Hill
Hiking is the headline activity. Macedonia Brook has more than 10 miles of trails, and the blue-blazed Macedonia Ridge Trail crosses Cobble Mountain for views of the Catskill and Taconic mountains. Fahnestock's day-use trail network remains open, with a portion of the Appalachian Trail running through the park and easy access to Canopus and Stillwater Lakes for fishing and rowboat rentals in season.
Water activities are close at hand. Lake Waramaug supports swimming at a sandy beach, along with car-top boating and on-site kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals. Sylvan Lake Beach Park is built around lake swimming and beach access.
Off-park attractions in Kent village, the Hudson Valley wineries, and the shops of Cold Spring give families a rain-day fallback and easy half-day trips from any of the campgrounds.

How to book near Brewster Hill
Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Macedonia Brook and Lake Waramaug, are reserved through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations are accepted 11 months in advance, must be made at least 48 hours prior to arrival at Macedonia Brook, and a two-night minimum applies. Walk-ins are not allowed at Macedonia Brook; reservations are required.
New York State Parks, including Fahnestock, use the ReserveAmerica NY portal with a nine-month rolling booking window. The Fahnestock campground itself is closed for 2026, but the Pelton Pond Pavilion and group wilderness campground remain reservable through the same system.
Sylvan Lake Beach Park is a private campground and is booked directly with the operator by phone or through its own website. RV renters should confirm site length and hookup availability at the time of booking, since site dimensions vary widely across these parks.
What to expect on arrival
The state park campgrounds in this region are rustic. At Macedonia Brook, facilities are basic, cell service is not available within the campground, and both alcohol and pets are prohibited. Lake Waramaug is more developed, with bathhouses, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station, but pets and alcohol are also prohibited there.
Sites accommodate a range of setups. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, though several are tent only, and each site has a parking area, table, fire ring, and grate. Hookups are not available at these state parks, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks.
Bears are present across the region, so food storage discipline matters. Firewood is typically sold on-site, and moving firewood across state lines is discouraged.
